It was started by a group of ski enthusiasts who built a rope tow and temporary ski lodge on the southwest face of Smokey Mountain. This location did not offer enough potential for further development and during the summer of 1961 the whole operation was moved to the present location on the east face of Smokey Mountain. The lodge was built and was opened on New Year's Eve, 1961. The Iron Ore Company of Canada built the road to the ski lodge in late 1961.
