Australian Capital Territory (ACT) The facts
The Australian Capital Territory contains Canberra, the capital of Australia. The ACT covers 4,067 square kilometres and has a population of about 312,000. It is about 150 kilometres inland from the east coast of Australia, and is encircled by New South Wales. Canberra tends to be hot in summer and cold in winter and, unlike some other milder Australia cities, it has four distinct seasons. In summer, while temperatures average 9 degrees overnight to 23 degrees during the day, it’s not uncommon to swelter in over 30-degree heat. In winter, temperatures average 3 degrees overnight to 16 degrees during the day. What makes the ACT unique?
Canberra is the capital of Australia and home to Parliament House and the Federal Government. There are a large number of people working in Government or public service positions. Most embassies in Australia are situated in Canberra, resulting in a multicultural community. The large student population can take advantage of the many cultural facilities. Canberra also has a lot of monuments, museums and national buildings, such as the National Library of Australia. The city is known as “the bush capital” because of the number of trees and parkland within the city and its proximity to bushland. The smaller size of the city works as an advantage to its residents, making travel fast and easy. The Territory is only a two-hour drive from both the ski fields to the south-west and NSW beaches to the south-east.

he FSM has a rich history dating back several thousand years. The islands were originally settled by ancient people sailing east from Asia and north from Polynesia . Later discovers and settlers included the Spanish, Germans, and Japanese and evidence of their former presence is found throughout the islands. Following the trusteeship under U.S. administration after W.W. II, the FSM is now independent and self-governing. Most linguistic and archaeological evidence indicates that the islands were first discovered and settled between two and three thousand years ago . The first settlers are often described as Austronesian speakers possessing horticultural skills and highly sophisticated maritime knowledge . These first settlers are thought to have migrated eastward from Southeast Asia to Yap. From there, some migrated south to Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and New Caledonia, and later to Kiribati and the Marshall Islands. The oral histories of the Micronesian people indicate close affiliations and interactions in the past among the members of the island societies comprising the present-day FSM. The Lelu ruins in Kosrae (1400 AD) and the Nan Madol ruins of Pohnpei (1000 AD) are impressive reminders of the accomplishments of these early peoples.
