Marine species in the Pacific
Introduction
The Pacific islands region is the largest continuous marine habitat on the planet, the Pacific ocean. It is home to a wide range of large marine animals including mammals like whales, dolphins, porpoise and dugongs and marine turtles. Maintaining healthy populations is essential to maintaining oceanic productivity.
Marine mammals
Despite efforts in certain areas and on certain species e.g. humpback whales, detailed knowledge of marine mammals is at best extremely limited. This is in part due to limited resources and expertise to undertake research in the region, the vastness of the region itself and the diversity of its marine mammals in it.
Whales
Blue Fin Sei Humpback recovery uncertain, currently under investigation through an integrated research programme - total population of Oceania probably of the order of 2000 animals

The College of New Caledonia will host a very special exhibit featuring the works of celebrated Black writers from around the world, February 14 to 19 in the CNC Cafeteria to mark Black History Month. Black Ink/ Encre noire is a visual representation of Black literature and writers whose works unite common realities: discrimination, equality, colonialism, and the recognition of civil and human rights. Among the thirty-five celebrated writers featured in the exhibit are eleven Black Canadians, including George Elliot Clarke, author of the recently published George and Rue: A Novel in Blackened English . Winner of the Governor-General's Award for poetry in 2001 — for Execution Poems — Clarke is a playwright, screenwriter, librettist, anthologist, and literary critic, as well as a poet. CNC Service Plan 2004 - 2007
Overview
The CNC Service Plan is made up the following five components:
Planning Context
At the centre of the province, the College of New Caledonia plays a crucial role in community and regional sustainability and health, particularly in an area that is struggling with diversification and difficult economic realities.
With 3,390 full-time and 2,390 part-time students annually across the five major and multiple smaller campuses, CNC’s focus is quality instruction and services to support our communities and student populations. Our Strategic Plan (2002 – 2006) and linked Educational Plan (2002 – 2006) reflect our commitment to remaining a comprehensive community college, while addressing emergent opportunities, government priorities, and accountability targets, all within available resources. CNC’s Strategic Plan provides four specific directions for focus and growth:
  • To continue to foster and develop a learning centred environment To strengthen and broaden student recruitment and retention processes to increase enrolments To align and direct human, physical, financial and technological resources to strategic directions

Oceania New Caledonia Hotels History and Government - New Caledonia
History : Discovered by Europeans in 1766, New Caledonia has been a French colony since 1853. It became a French Overseas Territory in 1946. From time to time, attempts have been made by the indigenous population to free themselves from French rule. The most serious of these was the Kanak Revolt of 1878, which was only subdued after a guerrilla campaign lasting for more than a year. In recent years, intermittent conflicts have flared up between the Melanesians and the French, reflecting the widely differing attitudes that exist towards the various plans for self-government. The majority of Kanaks (Melanesians) now support the Front de Liberation Nationale Kanak et Socialiste (National Kanak Socialist Liberation Front, FLNKS) created in 1984 and led, until his assassination in 1989, by the charismatic Jean-Marie Tjibaou. The Front is the largest party backing independence, which remains the overriding political issue in the territory.

RRCs 77th RRC 77th Regional Readiness Command "New York's Own" Overview History Leadership History The 77th Division, National Army, was organized at Camp Upton, Yaphank, N.Y. on August 25, 1917. It called itself the "Metropolitan Division" because its personnel came almost entirely from New York City. A unit of twenty three thousand men it included Manhattan taxi drivers, Bronx tailors, Brooklyn factory hands, Wall Street executives and first generation emigrants wearing the icon of freedom.
On April 30, 1918 the 77th went ashore in France they were the first Army division to reach France. The 77th attained its greatest fame in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. During this campaign soldiers of the "Lost Battalion", which consisted of elements of the 306th, 307th, and 308th Infantry Battalions made their historic stand.
For three days, the unit repulsed repeated German attacks. The Germans sent a note urging surrender. Major Charles S. Whittlesey, commander of the unit, replied "Come and get us." An act for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Overview The prehistory of Vanuatu is obscure; archaeological evidence supports the commonly held theory that peoples speaking Austronesian languages first came to the islands some 4,000 years ago. Pottery fragments have been found dating back to 1300-1100 B.C.
The first island in the Vanuatu group discovered by Europeans was Espiritu Santo, when in 1606 the Portuguese explorer, Pedro Fernandez De Quiros, spied what he thought was a southern continent. Europeans did not return until 1768, when Louis Antoine de Bougainville rediscovered the islands. In 1774, Captain Cook named the islands the New Hebrides, a name that lasted until independence.
In 1825, trader Peter Dillon's discovery of sandalwood on the island of Erromango began a rush that ended in 1830 after a clash between immigrant Polynesian workers and indigenous Melanesians. During the 1860s, planters in Australia, Fiji, New Caledonia, and the Samoa Islands, in need of laborers, encouraged a long-term indentured labor trade called "blackbirding." At the height of the labor trade, more than one-half the adult male population of several of the Islands worked abroad.
It was at this time that missionaries, both Catholic and Protestant, arrived on the islands. Settlers also came, looking for land on which to establish cotton plantations. When international cotton prices collapsed, they switched to coffee, cocoa, bananas, and, most successfully, coconuts. Initially, British subjects from Australia made up the majority, but the establishment of the Caledonian Company of the New Hebrides in 1882 soon tipped the balance in favor of French subjects. By the turn of the century, the French outnumbered the British two to one.
