    Name
The name Caledonia derives from the Latin name of a region corresponding approximately to modern Scotland . The name Kanaky is also in common usage in French, English and the indigenous languages. This name is favored by Melanesian nationalists. The word comes from kanaka , a Polynesian word meaning human used by Polynesians to call themselves. The word was later used by the French to call all the native inhabitants of the South Pacific Ocean, including the Melanesian (non-Polynesian) native inhabitants of New Caledonia. The word, turned into Canaque in French, became derogative. In the 1960s and 1970s, when the Melanesian native inhabitants started to organize themselves into political parties and ask for independence, this derogative word was turned into a symbol of political emancipation and pride.

Excerpt
This book aims to present English readers with a synthesis of recent French research in the Republic of Vanuatu and the three overseas territories of Wallis and Futuna, French Polynesia, and New Caledonia. It is the revised and updated English version of the proceedings of a 1994 island-hopping conference organized by the French National Committee on Geography. It provides a unique combination of information on the French-speaking Pacific in terms of natural (terrestrial and marine) and human (sociocultural and economic) geography from a historical and contemporary perspective. The richness of the approach is enhanced by the multidisciplinarity of the contributors. The book begins with a large, 36-page chapter by Gilbert David, on the Republic of Vanuatu, that examines the physical geography, climate, maritime area, environment, socioeconomic, and human aspects, as well as the past twenty-five years of administration, politics, demography, agricultural activities, fisheries, and service-sector development. It is followed by two...

Research Interests
Impacts (environmental, economic and social and political and relational) following the creation of tourism destinations. Issues that surround the sustainable development of tourism destinations. French Pacific (Tahiti and its Islands, New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna) tourism issues. My research interests lie in analysing the geographic context within which tourism destinations are developed. Certain destinations I have found fascinating because of their particular contexts: why would an American entertainment company believe that its product could succeed in a foreign environment and why would it be helped by that country's government? The project seemed to be an abysmal failure 20 months after its opening but its owners could not afford to shut it down. What was really happening? That question led to some of the articles I have published and to others that are still gestating. Another resort, which has been financially successful, has had to deal with a public relations hassle and with protracted litigation from surrounding townships. Foxwoods Casino Resort's contextual relations are very different from those of Disneyland Paris but have been just as fascinating to study. In the case of Foxwoods (located in Connecticut), two cultural groups have diverging perspectives that have proven more difficult to reconcile than in the case of Disneyland Paris.

Situated in the Pacific Ocean east of Australia, the French islands of New Caledonia contain a unique and isolated group of species. In addition to twigs, the crows manufacture tools from long and barbed leaves of the pandanus (or screw pine) tree. By examining more than 5,500 tool imprints in 21 sites throughout New Caledonia, the pair were able to assess patterns in the tool design and location and abundance of each tool type. The results suggested that both narrow and stepped tools are more advanced versions of the wide tool type. No Similar Example Tool invention is very rare, said Hunt. Therefore it's quite unlikely that each type of leaf tool has been the result of a unique discovery. In addition, the geographical distribution of each tool type on the island suggests a unique origin, rather than multiple independent inventions. The crow has "developed the capacity to evolve its tools," said Hunt, an important step in the direction of a complex material culture, like that exhibited by people.
