Cosmopolitan Relaxation in New Caledonia
Ever heard of New Caledonia? Don't worry, not many people have (at least in North America, anyway). This scenic island chain lies deep in the South Pacific and provides a very different experience than you would find in better-known destinations like Fiji and French Polynesia. In a rather eclectic manner, New Caledonia blends the cultural sophistication of the French Riviera with the beauty and laid back nature of the South Pacific. This destination is ideal for those who want fine dining, foreign culture boutique shopping and beautiful white sand beaches all in one place. If you start to get antsy, Isle of Pines offers a number of options for casual exploration. One of its more interesting attractions is a series of caves. Ouatchia Cave, in particular, has beautiful stalagmites. You can see the island in a variety of ways, by foot, bicycle, 4WD, or boat. Try taking a traditional Melanesian outrigger canoe across the turquoise lagoon. Or, venture through the island's interior in a kayak. Seeing the countryside from the vantage point of the Dumbea, Tontouta and Blue Rivers makes for a memorable experience.

GENERAL INFORMATION Visitors seeking a relaxed and interesting holiday will find New Caledonia offers this and more. Enjoy the warm balmy climate, sandy white beaches lined with coconut palms and aquamarine lagoons teeming with fish. Experience the culture - a subtle blend of French traditions and fascinating Melanesian custom. New Caledonia is a place where romance, adventure and dreams can come true. The mainland has a chain of high mountains which run the length of the island, dividing the island into two distinct regions. These are the west coast, which is dry, and the more tropical east coast. New Caledonia offers marvellous panoramic dense forests and green hills, contrasted by the bold mountains. The barrier reef stretching 1600 kms and encircling the mainland forms the world’s largest lagoon. Map of New Caledonia ACCOMMODATION
ACTIVITIES
New Caledonia offers the complete outdoor experience, greatly enhanced by the flora and fauna. Other water activities include waterskiing, parasailing, canoeing, windsurfing, sailing and much more. Land based activities take in the action starting with 4WD tours or all levels of bush walking. Scenic flights offer spectacular views and are one of the best ways to view the reefs and islands.

New Zealand's history may be short by old world standards but New Zealand still has a rich heritage of archaeological sites which illustrate its history. These sites have yet the potential to greatly elucidate aspects of our history that remain little known or controversial. The terraces and ditch defences of a Maori pa near Tauranga. In Western nations, the decades after World War II witness an increasing recognition and celebration of the remarkable achievements of Melanesian artists. As wider appreciation for what is then referred to as "primitive" art develops among both audiences and critics, works from Melanesia are incorporated as part of broader surveys of "primitive" or Oceanic art. However, almost immediately, exhibitions devoted exclusively to Melanesia, such as Human Forms in the Art of Melanesia (1952) in Auckland, New Zealand, or (1954) in Brussels, also begin to take place. These are soon followed by exhibitions devoted to individual or regional artistic traditions. Initially, these more specialized presentations focus almost exclusively on the artistic traditions of New Guinea and include Kunstwerke vom Sepik (1954) in Basel, Switzerland

However, it is not until the nineteenth century that broader sustained contact between Melanesian peoples and the West begins to have a substantial impact on the region's arts and cultures. Following, and occasionally adding to, the discoveries of the early explorers, sailors on European and American commercial vessels are the first outsiders to establish lasting, though often volatile, relations with many Melanesian groups. In the 1820s, Western traders start to scour the region for sandalwood, an aromatic timber highly valued in the China trade, which the islanders exchange for Western goods. The trade ends in the 1860s as supplies become depleted, but by this point whalers have been active in the region for decades in search of whales and provisions. Despite the threefold impact of colonialism, missionization, and labor recruitment, the majority of Melanesian arts survive the nineteenth century intact, although some, such as

To many, the word "Pacific" conjures up images of swaying palm trees, islanders in grass skirts, World War II battles and dazzling sunsets. These stereotypes have helped to obscure the extraordinary cultural, political and natural diversity of the Pacific Islands, a vibrant and complex region encompassing 25,000 islands spread over 10 million square miles of ocean in which 30 million people speak hundreds of different languages and dialects. Dance is the one thing they all have in common, the unifying art form that embraces all of them. For nearly 50,000 years, dances and songs have been an expression of Pacific Islanders' origins, their journeys, their struggles - their very existence. These are their "dance stories" - their DANCES OF LIFE. The program journeys to five Pacific islands - New Zealand, Palau, Guam, American Samoa and New Caledonia - to reveal the cultural history and diversity of the Pacific Islands. DANCES OF LIFE airs on PBS on Thursday, May 12, 2005, 10:00-11:00 p.m. ET. ( check local listings ). Keisha Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider) narrates.
