Datings of rock carvings (petroglyphs), sculptured stone and Lapita pottery put first settlement of the islands at 4000 years ago as part of the great Melanesian migration across the Pacific from Asia.
While the French influence is strong, the Kanaks have retained much of their culture and tradition, particularly in rural areas and on the outer islands.
Kanak daily life is based on closely-knit, extended family units led by chiefs and councils of elders. The people live communally, with no concept of individual land or home ownership. Sharing is important to community well being. Life ceremonies, such as weddings and funerals, are important occasions.
Music and dance are an integral part of the culture. They are used both for ceremony and amusement and include items that have existed for generations as well as those choreographed for special occasions - or created impromptu.

Although part of New Caledonia, the beautiful Loyalty Islands have their own unique cultural identity. Life is still governed by tribal traditions that date back to the islands’ earliest settlement by Melanesians, who arrived over 3000 years ago. Further cultural influences were brought by Europeans who came for the Loyalty Islands' sandalwood timber and for whaling, and later by the missionaries. In 1864 the Loyalty Islands were annexed by France. Loyalty Islanders are known for their friendliness and hospitality and visitors are treated as favoured guests.
The four raised coral atolls of the Loyalty Islands total 1980 sq km. Lifou , the largest island at 1150sq km, has a coastline etched with long beaches of white sand and ancient reef cliffs pierced by caves. Mar© is an island of wild beauty and natural contrasts. It is the most rocky of the Loyalty Islands with towering cliffs interspersed by sandy coves. Ouv©a is known as the ‘magic’ island and is one of the most beautiful in the Pacific. The west coast of this crescent-shaped atoll is a 25km long stretch of uninterrupted white sand. Tiga is the smallest of the Loyalty Islands, covering just 12sq km. There are no facilities here for tours or accommodation.

Twenty kilometers of unbroken white sands border the lagoon on the west side of the island and extend far out from shore to give the water a turquoise hue. Distribution Source : Article Warehouse Date : Wednesday - April 13, 2005 David Stanley (Article Warehouse - Apr 13, 2005) "Ouvea is everything you'd expect in a South Pacific island. Twenty kilometers of unbroken white sands border the lagoon on the west side of the island and extend far out from shore to give the water a turquoise hue. The wide western lagoon, protected by a string of coral islands and a barrier reef, is the only one of its kind in the Loyalties. On the ocean side are rocky cliffs, pounded by surf, but fine beaches may be found even here. At one point on this narrow atoll only 450 meters separates the two coasts. Traditional circular houses with pointed thatched roofs are still common in the villages".
Those words appeared in the 1985 edition of my South Pacific Handbook after a visit in 1983. Just over 20 years later I returned to Ouvea to discover that little had changed in this large French colony east of Australia.
