How it all began... Vehicles were first officially recorded in Fredericton (the capital) in 1905, but no plates were issued. Interestingly, this makes NB the third province, after Ontario and Quebec, to officially record motor vehicles. The province began registering vehicles in 1908 and, up until 1910, the plates were provided by the owner. These markers were often white on black, and made of leather, with the initials NB usually printed vertically after the serial number. A dated 1910 porcelain plate is known to exist but it too is provided by the owner as the province did not start officially supplying plates until 1911 when annual registration took effect. NB had a longer run of porcelain plates than any other province. They lasted until 1917 and were in a beautiful array of colours. They are rare, and highly prized today. Believe it or not, NB motorists were required to drive on the left side of the road until Dec 1, 1922! This posed a challenge for neighboring Maine which always had been driving on the right!

UMDNJ History
You may require some kind of historical background on the University. Therefore, we include as background information a chronology of important dates in UMDNJ's history.
  • New Jersey's first programs of medical and dental education were founded with the incorporation of the Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry on August 6. The college, located at Jersey City Medical Center, enrolled its first class in 1956. It was the forerunner of the UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, the UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School and the UMDNJ-Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
New Jersey's first public program of medical education was chartered as part of Rutgers University. The Rutgers Medical School opened in 1966 as a two-year basic science institution offering the master of medical science (M.M.S.) degree.
The Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry was acquired by the State of New Jersey and renamed the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry (NJCMD) under a contract signed on May 3. Two years later, the medical school relocated to temporary facilities in Newark, although the dental school remained in Jersey City until 1977.
Martland Hospital, formerly Newark City Hospital, was acquired by the State as the primary teaching facility for NJCMD. Closed as a health care facility in 1979, the Martland Building was renamed the Stanley S. Bergen Building in 1999 and currently houses the UMDNJ-School of Health Related Professions, the UMDNJ-School of Nursing and various administrative and clinical offices.

nergy policy in New Brunswick has been historically dominated by electricity policy. In turn, electricity policy has been dominated by the twin interests of industry in cheap power and N.B. Power’s institutional agenda to develop its generation and transmission infrastructure to serve export markets. Economies of scale were attained by exploiting American electricity markets, permitting the construction of power plants of a size that otherwise could not be justified to serve New Brunswick alone. This, combined with a strategy of importing inexpensive hydro power from Québec for domestic purposes while exporting more expensive domestic power, kept power rates very low compared to many other jurisdictions. 1980's ... conservation shelved

Eastern New Brunswick's Railway History
From VIA Rail's Ocean Limited by J. A. Clowes, 234 Canterbury Avenue, Riverview, NB E1B 2R7
E-Mail: jaclowes@istar.ca
January 1999 Based on a recent article in the Upper
Canada Railway Society's "Rail & Transit" magazine. Use this map to follow the route of the Ocean Limited through New Brunswick. To the rail enthusiast interested in railway history, a trip through New Brunswick by VIA Rail's Ocean Limited can highlight part of New Brunswick's long association with railways. Today, a seat in one of VIA's dome observation cars provides a good vantage point for our observations. To be able to cover the full length of the province, I boarded "The Ocean" in Amherst, Nova Scotia on a bright sunny afternoon in late June (not in snow as seen in the picture!). With three prime cultures, New Brunswick has seen variations in the spelling of the many names. Therefore, be forewarned, for in general where these variations occur, I will be favouring railway names and spelling. Also, I will be skipping some of the more recent spurs, as well as most private sidings. Our departure from Amherst's interesting one and a half storey red sand-stone station was on time. As we headed out across the Chignecto Isthmus for our 10 mile journey to Sackville, New Brunswick, one has to attempt to visualize the many changes that the Amherst station has witnessed in its nearly 130 years of railway use.

Other strong shocks on April 14, 1658, February 10, 1661, February 5, 1663, September 16, 1732, November 29, 1783, and October 17, 1860, were felt over broad portions of the region. Also, the major earthquake of November 18, 1755, east of Cape Ann, Massachusetts , affected a large area (about 777,000 square kilometers), including all of Vermont. On December 18, 1867, an early morning shock awakened persons (MM V) in Burlington, Vermont, Odgensburg and Syracuse, New York, and Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The tremor was also reported felt as far as east as Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada. Previously listed as centered in Vermont, this earthquake may have had its origin in the St. Lawrence Valley region, the dominant seismic zone in the area. Many of the earlier earthquakes have limited information and the historical accounts are indefinite. Little damage resulted from what was described as a "severe" shock in northeastern New York on May 27, 1897. It was felt over an area approximately 288,000 square kilometers, including New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and parts of Quebec, Canada. A similar earthquake centered in southeastern Maine on March 21, 1904. This shock was felt throughout the greater part of New England and the provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The affected area was about the same as that of the previous tremor. Chimneys were damaged at Calais and Eastport, Maine, and St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada.
