The Provincial Flag is of a golden lion on a red compartment and an ancient oared galley was adopted by proclamation on February 24, 1965. It was based on the provincial Coat of Arms. The ship refers to the Maritime location of the province, as well as its former important shipbuilding industry. A ship in full sail was seen on the Great Seal of the symbols of the Royal House of Brunswick and is also found in the arms of Great Britain and of the old Duchy in Normandy. The legal authority for the flag is derived from Queen Victoria's Royal Warrant in 1868. The Provincial Coat of Arms On May 26, 1868, Queen Victoria assigned armorial bearings to New Brunswick, consisting of a shield of arms depicting a gold lion on a red background, and below it an ancient galley in the water with oars in action. The design was based in part on the first Great Seal of New Brunswick which featured a sailing ship on water. The lion alludes to the arms of the Duchy of Brunswick in Germany (two gold lions on a red field) which was a possession of King George III at the time the Province of New Brunswick was established in 1784.
On Sept. 25, 1984, at a public ceremony in Fredericton, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II signed a royal warrant granting augmentations to the provincial arms. The additions were all symbolic of New Brunswick and consist of a crest resting on a golden royal helmet over the shield, supporters on either side and a compartment below. They were granted by The Queen, in the words of the royal warrant, "for the greater honor and distinction" of New Brunswick and to mark the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the province in 1784.

DID YOU KNOW?
DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY ?
Fish stories abound in the Miramichi River in the heart of salmon country. The river boasts the best salmon fishing in the world. Just ask American test pilot Chuck Yeager and U.S. Army General Norman Schwarzkopf- two of the many famous anglers who have waded in the river.
LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!!!
New Brunswick musicians made history in May of 1907 at the Nickel Theatre in Saint John. They were the first to accompany silent moving pictures in North America. Film mogul Louis B. Mayer grew up in Saint John. The port city has been home to several Hollywood legends, including distinguished actors Walter Pidgeon and Donald Sutherland-star of the Academy Award winning film Ordinary People.
TAKE COVER!
The world's longest covered bridge was completed in Hartland in 1899. It's 390 metres ( 1,282 feet ) long and spans the Saint John River. There are 62 covered bridges in the province. Many of them are in the Sussex area of Kings County- the Covered Bridge Capital of Atlantic Canada. Be sure to make a wish as you drive through. (Oh, and ask one of the locals to tell you why covered bridges are called Kissing Bridges) !
FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD
The world's biggest lobster "lives" in Shediac, but unfortunately he doesn't breathe. It's 10.5 metres ( 35 feet ) long, 4.5 metres ( 15 feet ) high and weighs 90 tons! And you can climb on him. Oh my homard!

The Acadian Refugees and Exiles
Who Went to New Brunswick
Perhaps unknown to many is the fact that among the first establishments in Acadia, the French had also settled where we know today as New Brunswick. Claude de Latour, the father of Charles, was well installed at the mouth of the St. John River before de Razilly and d’Aulnay arrived at Port-Royal in 1632. Later, French pioneers settled here also along different place on the St. John up until the time the English conquered the land. There were Acadians in Sainte-Anne (Fredericton), Nashwaak, Ekoupag (Meductic), Oromocto, Mercure (French Village), Sainte-Marie (Marysville), Jemseg as well as at Kennébécasis and Managouèche, then located near what is now the city of St. John.
Many Acadians from places like Shepody, Petitcodiac and Memramcook rivers managed to escape the Deportation. But what happened to them? Well some small groups went to the Miramichi River or to the uper Petitcodiac River in an area known to us today as New Brunswick. They went to Fox Creek (near St. Anselme), Saint-Anselme, Dieppe, Moncton, Coverdale, Boundary Creek and Salisbury.
Following the destruction of Chipoudy and Petitcoudiac churches in the fall of 1755, Father Jean-Baptiste de la Brosse, missionary, baptized many children in the house of Toussaint Blanchard on the west side of the Petitcodiac River. This was located opposite Fox Creek. In 1758, three years after the onset of the Deportation, the English finally destroyed the villages on the upper Petitcodiac where Acadian refugees had been in hiding since 1755. Captain Scott ordered the burning of La Chapelle (previously known as Le Coude(Moncton), Silvabro (Dieppe), and Jagersome (Lewisville). He ordered the burning of all property as far as Beausoleil (Boundary Creek). On 24 women and four men were taken as prisoners.

HISTORY OF THE NEW BRUNSWICK AMATEUR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION (Hockey New Brunswick)
BY HAROLD L. POST
The date of the first organized hockey game played in New Brunswick seems unclear but appears to go back to the late 1890's. The first organization actually dealing with the administration and development of hockey in this province occurred when Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick jointly formed the Maritime Amateur Hockey Association (MAHA) and formally was admitted to the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) in 1928. This arrangement, although somewhat shaky at times, lasted forty years.
As the membership in New Brunswick continued to grow, it became clear that it would be in our best interest to break away from the Maritime Amateur Hockey Association and do it alone. In 1953, H. O. Schryer of Bathurst unsuccessfully suggested a New Brunswick branch of the National Association. It was not until several years later in 1966 that Len Poore of Fredericton and Maurice Harquail of Campbellton went to the CAHA Annual General Meeting in Montreal and made a presentation in another attempt to have New Brunswick recognized as a separate branch. It was agreed by the CAHA to have the New Brunswick branch go one year on its own, then seek approval in 1967.
The wheels were set in motion and in May of 1967, Moncton's Vance Toner, Vice-President of the MAHA, called a meeting for interested hockey people that was held in Memramcook. Two further meetings were held in St. Andrews and Lancaster to continue the development of a New Brunswick branch.

S ETTLEMENT "Manan" is a corruption of MUN AN OOK or MAN AN OOK - meaning "island place" or "the island" from the Maliseet-Passamaquoddy-Penobscot Indians who visited the island from spring until fall when the treacherous waters were navigable in their canoes. Most believe that they fished, harvested dulse and birds' eggs, hunted seals, seabirds and harbour porpoises, and returned to the mainland in winter since no large game was on the island and there were few opportunities to fish or hunt marine life. The Norse are probably the first Europeans to visit Grand Manan, possibly as a headquarters while exploring both Bay of Fundy and Gulf of Maine. Other important events were as follows:
    • 1000 - Norse explorers probably visited the island. 1498 - Sebastien Cabot and 1501 - Gaspar Cortereal likely saw Grand Manan. 1504 - Breton fishermen probably fished bounteous waters around Grand Manan. 1558 - Portuguese map of North America shows cape of many islands including those of Passamaquoddy and Grand Manan. 1583 - Trading voyage to the "Bay of Menan" by Stephen Bellinger.
