THE GRAND HISTORIAN'S NOTEBOOK
by R:W:Bro David "Bud" Gillrie
January 2004
THE GRAND LODGE THAT NEVER WAS
< Twice in the history of Freemasonry in New Brunswick there have been efforts to establish independence from authority outside the provincial boundaries.
Various records and reports would indicate that the concept of a Grand Lodge for New Brunswick was proposed early in the provinces history, probably during the second decade of the 19th Century.
The Lodge extant in New Brunswick at that time generally held their warrants by the delegated authority of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia, themselves authorized by the Grand Lodge of England. That is the "Grand Lodge of England According to the Old Institutions", the Grand Lodge called the "Antients"; which Masonic body was recognized by the Grand Lodge of Ireland, established in 1725 and that of the Grand Lodge of Scotland, formed in 1736.
The fact that the lodges holding warrants within the province of New Brunswick were based on a single jurisdiction was a favourable consideration when looking at an independent grand lodge for the province.
The Grand Lodges of the Antients and of the so called "Moderns" had by 1813 settled their differences and became the United Grand Lodge of England. This was the period where many old lodges were renumbered to adjust or recognize the seniority of the lodges of both former grand lodges and allow recognition in the new united body. The lodges of New Brunswick from that time continued to recognize the provincial grand lodge of Nova Scotia as the head of Masonic government, within the region, with their annual returns and payments as well as their Masonic enquiries being made to that authority.

Party Leader Constituency Associations Member's Guide
The New Brunswick NDP is a grassroots political organization aimed at electing Members of the Legislative Assembly who will influence decisions surrounding government policy and legislation based on our principles. In between elections, members can engage in a wide range of activities, based on their available time and interest, that communicate our ideas and support the growth of the party. The NDP also depends on its members for financial support, as it does not accept contributions from corporations or banks. History of the New Brunswick NDP The roots of the NDP in New Brunswick date back to the early twentieth century. In 1902, the Fredericton Socialist League was founded by Henry Stuart. By World War I, branches were established in McAdam, Albert, Newcastle and Saint John. By the 1930's the links between democratic socialism and the labour movement were well forged in New Brunswick. It was natural that New Brunswickers would become part of a broader political movement that was developing in Canada. The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) was started during and in response to the Depression. At the time its goals were considered revolutionary: public medical services; public transportation, electricity and other industries; worker protection against accident, illness and unemployment; the establishment of an old age pension.

New Brunswick history for dummies
My latest lesson in "important stuff I should've known about New Brunswick" I learned this weekend
I had a hell of a damn time this past weekend.
Why you might ask? The answer, deliciously simple, is that I went to the Beaverbrook Art Gallery for the first time ever. Gasp if you must, it took me long enough to go.
So why now? Well aside from a somewhat unscheduled trip to the capital city and a few hours to kill before a bus ride back to Saint John, the friends I was spending the day with had a hankering to view Art in Dispute. You know, the collection of paintings that has had the gallery in a legal dispute with the Aitken, or Beaverbrook, estate keepers.
So many paintings, so little time, I thought upon entering the gallery they were displayed in.
Literally packed from floor to ceiling, there was everything from the Dali painting of Lady Dunn (whom he apparently painted with three legs. I had to be told. I didn't notice), to paintings of Winston Churchill, plaqued newspaper clippings, letters to the gallery curator, and of course the most famous paintings in dispute The Fountain of Indolence by J. Turner and Hotel Ballroom by Lucian Freud.
Overwhelming indeed, I don't even remember the Louvre having so many paintings grouped together in a space that size - though five years have passed since I was there last and memories have a way of playing tricks on you. At any rate, my companions mentioned that though many of the paintings had been hung in the gallery before, it was no small feat to take them all in at once.

What conditions were imposed on the first woman training as a teacher in New Brunswick? What New Brunswick woman won a Persons Case years before the more famous Canadian Persons Case? In what year was the first female plumber licensed in New Brunswick? What New Brunswick woman petitioned - unsuccessfully - a New Brunswick court to free her from slavery? Who is Molly Kool? The surprising answers to these and 40 more questions are found in a new publication and online quiz released by the Advisory Council on the Status of Women. Celebrating Achievers is online at www.acswcccf.nb.ca.
"For years, the Advisory Council has quoted the saying that behind every successful woman are all the women who came before her," said the Chairperson of the Advisory Council, Dr. Mary Lou Stirling. "Celebrating Achievers is our salute to some of those women."
"October is Women's History Month. How many of these women do New Brunswickers remember? The history behind New Brunswick women's struggle to gain social and legal rights is a fascinating one, and New Brunswick women are still marking some firsts. It was only last year that the first female plumber was licensed in the province. We have not yet had a female Premier and the day when the pay gap between women and men is closed seems far in the future," noted Dr. Stirling.

Researchers join forces to preserve military heritage of New Brunswick
By Christy English Published: Friday, December 19, 2003 From left, Robert Dallison, Marc Milner, and Brent Wilson
The province's history is coming to life thanks to the creators of the New Brunswick Military Heritage Project (NBMHP).
Devoted to fostering public interest in the often-forgotten military history of the province, the project was conceived in 2000 by the Military and Strategic Studies Program at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.
History professor Marc Milner is co-director of NBMHP with Brent Wilson, a senior researcher with UNBF's Centre for Conflict Studies. After his book Canada's Navy: The First Century was published, Dr. Milner became inspired, he says, by a graduate student's thesis on Fort Beauséjour and a book by Ernest Clarke of Nova Scotia titled The Siege of Fort Cumberland, 1776: An Episode in the American Revolution.
"I became smitten by a history whose scope few are aware of," said Dr. Milner. "Add to that the fact that the Chatham air base had shut down, old forts in Saint John were being bulldozed and I had visited two abandoned armament depots at McGivney and Renous."

Grand Manan About New Brunswick - History When Samuel de Champlain and other Europeans began to visit New Brunswick in the earlv 1600s, they were met by Maliseets and Micmacs. The early French farmers settled at the head of the Bay of Fundy and up the St. John River Valley as far as present-day Fredericton and called the land Acadia. Fall-out from the English and French wars in Europe resulted in the expulsion of more than 5,000 Acadians in 1755. Some of them escaped to what was then a remote and uninhabited coastline along the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Chaleur Bay. Today we call it the Acadian Peninsula. Others returned to France or fled to the United States, many settling in Louisiana. In 1783 it was the English who were refugees. During the American Revolution some citizens from the eastern seaboard wanted to remain loyal to the English crown and fled to Canada. So many landed in Saint John that by 1785 they were able to incorporate Canada's first city.

History of Easter Seals New Brunswick
The Canadian Rehabilitation Council for the Disabled (CRCD) New Brunswick Branch was incorporated on December 23, 1966, with the first organized meeting of the directors held on June 13, 1967. The election of officers included Dr. P.G. Thompson, President; Frank Gibson, Vice-President; Dorothy Cummings, Secretary; and C.N.R. Scott, Executive Director. Prior to CRCD's arrival, the New Brunswick Society for Crippled Children and the New Brunswick Foundation for Poliomyelitis and Rehabilitation had provided services for many years to persons with disabilities upon referral. However, at the age of 16, clients of the Crippled Children's Society no longer had access to rehabilitation services, as they no longer fell into the target population. This break in service made the need for organizational partnerships obvious. In the early fifties, Dr. Mayers - the Director of Maternal and Child Health - spearheaded a movement to combine voluntary efforts towards rehabilitation services. In 1955, Dr. Mayers began to campaign to get a co-ordinated group organized. A year later the doctor's work paid off with the launch of the New Brunswick Co-ordinating Council for the Handicapped. The new group represented 57 member organizations from throughout the province. It was largely financed by grants from the Crippled Children's Society and the Poliomyelitis Foundation.
