Return to Title Page Summary statement 1. Introduction New Brunswick is a bilingual province. Education programs and services are offered in both official languages. 2. Organization of school system In 1995, New Brunswick embarked on a new organization for high school education that focusses on a four-year program called the High School Program. Note : It will be important for users of this guide to realize that a phase-in approach is being taken, so that new programs will not be fully in place until 2001. It may be prudent, therefore, to consult the 1991 edition of this guide for interpretation of some student transcripts prior to full implementation of the new program. School programs and activities are organized on a one-year basis with the school year extending from after Labour Day through mid-June. The year consists of 195 days for teachers and 187 for students divided into two semesters. Hours of instruction are are a minimum of five and one-half hours per day. The high school experience will normally be of four years duration including grades 9-12. Grades 9/10 offer an opportunity for consolidation of, and growth in, necessary skills and knowledge across a broad common curriculum (see section 6). The 9/10 program is outcome-directed and students may proceed to grades 11/12 courses when subject outcomes have been achieved.

History and Geography
Located in the western part of New Brunswick, Victoria County is bordered on the north by Restigouche County, on the east by Northumberland and York Counties, on the south by Carleton County, and on the west by Aroostook County (Maine) and Madawaska County. The genealogist researching records of the land that is now Victoria County should understand the history of this area, and the evolution of its borders. In 1785 New Brunswick was first established and comprised eight counties; the land that is now Victoria county was originally part of York county. In 1831, the northern part of York County became Carleton County. The parishes (similar to US townships, and used as census sub-districts) of Perth, Madawaska, and Andover were established in 1833. In 1844, Victoria County was erected from the northern parts of Carleton County. The parishes of St Leonard and St Basil were established in 1850; Grand Falls, Gordon, Lorne, and Drummond were established in 1852, 1863, 1871, and 1872 (respectively). In 1873, the western half of Victoria County including the parishes of Madawaska, St Leonard, and St Basil split off to become Madawaska County. Present-day Victoria County comprises Andover, Drummond, Gordon, Grand Falls, Lorne, and Perth parishes.

of the province as well. In 1785, as part of the formation of the new province of New Brunswick, Charlotte County was established as one of the original counties. 7 original parishes were created and set off in 1786 but they did not include all the lands assigned to the County. These 7 parishes were later subdivided as warranted by population increases. Today, the county has 15 parishes. The Province of New Brunswick uses a system of counties and civil parishes (Here's a List of NB Parishes!). Each county is divided into civil parishes which can be considered similar to American townships.

Case Study D Lower Coverdale Community Web Site (New Brunswick)
Overview The Lower Coverdale community Web site project was implemented as a schoolwide initiative during the 1999-2000 school year at Lower Coverdale Elementary School in Lower Coverdale, New Brunswick, as part of the "Communities@ca." contest. Nearly 100 students, four teachers, the school's principal, and volunteers from the Lower Coverdale Access Center contributed to its completion. Students from Kindergarten to grade 6 worked together to present Lower Coverdale as a lively community. Student groups focused on different themes such as the community's geography and history. To do this, the students engaged in collecting data from the Internet and book sources as well as conducting fieldwork (interviews). Moreover, several students contributed their own creations ranging from texts and graphics to interactive quizzes and a directory of Web links, for publication on the Web site.

While it is impossible to include all the comments or opinions heard or submitted, we have attempted to include the substance, tone and key arguments, both pro and con, regarding the initial proposed boundary adjustments. The statistical portion of each summary section includes:

Westmorland county, NB, Canada This photo was taken in June 2005, though I first saw the flag in August 2004. The arms on the flag were granted on August 15 1999, by the Canadian Heraldic Authority. Note that August 15, is the Acadian National Day, celebrating their patron saint, Our Lady of the Assumption. Below is some information about the arms and flag according to the Acadian town's website . Notice that the flag is described as having a provincial flag in canton, similar to the flag granted to Rothesay NB. I saw the flag displayed in three different places in town and never with a canton (as the photo attests). Blazon: Barry wavy Argent and Azure a lobster Gules, on a chief Vert two bars gemelles Or, a seagull wings extended Argent Supporters: On a compartment Proper, two sea lions Or, armed and langued Gules, each holding in its dexter paw a rolled parchment Argent. Crest: On a circlet Or; between two half stars and in the center, all Or, two ship's bows also Or, sails Argent, rigged Or. Motto: IN UNUM AD SUMMUM can be translated to "TOGETHER TOWARD THE HEIGHTS" The Symbols A red lobster has been used for some time now on the Town's logo. It is retained in the coat of arms for the sake of continuity with a symbol that has come to be identified with Shediac, which boast that it is "THE LOBSTER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD"
