(The following article was published in the Spring 1995 issue of Towers Magazine , a publication directed primarily to alumni/ae and friends of Otterbein College. The editor said later that it generated more responses than any article ever run in that periodical, many but by no means all of them negative. Written for a general audience, it contains a gentle suggestion that there may be something in New Age Religion worth looking at, even for conservative Christians. Many conservative Christians, it seems, disagreed. To their chagrin, Paul has tenure.)
New Age Religion:
Modern Cult or Ancient Spirituality?
by Paul A. Laughlin, Ph.D.

One of the fastest growing spiritual movements in the United States today is to be found in the so-called "New Age Religion." What is perhaps most surprising about this growth is that it comes at the very time that most mainline Protestant denominations have been experiencing a gradual but steady and significant decline in membership. What is probably more predictable is the charge leveled against New Age religion by some Christians, and simply believed by many others, that it is nothing but a new-fangled, error-ridden, and dangerous "cult." The truth is, however, that New Age religion actually reflects an age-old spirituality, one that in some important respects may be compatible with Christianity!
It is difficult to measure the exact dimensions of the New Age movement in contemporary American religion, because it is intentionally unorganized and very diffuse, a mixture of diverse religious and spiritual beliefs and practices. In fact, most New Agers prefer the term "spirituality" to "religion," precisely because so far they have not shown much interest in producing lasting institutional forms, like churches. Nor do they insist jealously on exclusive allegiance and loyalty, or the rejection of alternative spiritual paths. Instead, followers and advocates of New Age spirituality tend to regard and promote it as more of a view or way of life that may be compatible with and supplementary to other more traditional religious practices.

by Sir Jim R Wallaby (Sir Jim R Wallaby is President of Pseudonyms Anonymous) Sometimes world changing concepts crop up in the most unexpected places. It was a letter to the editor of that fine publication New Scientist (April 22, 1994) that caused me to question all my long held prejudices about how the world actually operates. Unusually (even perhaps uniquely) for that publication, the letter was anonymous and contained this explanation "My apologies for remaining anonymous. I am a ‘professional researcher’ with a string of letters after my name. My employers would not like this letter and jobs are hard to find these days. Anon" Interesting, but hardly world shattering. Well perhaps not to you Dear Reader, but to Anon and, by extension, to the scion of the ancient house of Wallaby, this event heralded an epiphany. He suggests that his theory is easily testable. "If what I am implying is true, all we need to see data taken before a theory has been worked out , and then examine the results to see if the earlier recorded data is in accord with the new theory."

New Age Religion:
The Cult Of Self-Love

November 15, 1998 by: Allan Turner The New Age movement is committed to the inward journey. It is a movement that asserts the deification of the "Self." The so-called enlightened goals of the New Age movement are grounded in Satan's Edenic lie to Eve, "then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil" (Genesis 3:5). Although the self-love, self-confidence, self-potential, self-awareness, self-acceptance, self-image, self-esteem, self-fulfillment, self-development, self-assertion, self- actualization, and other present-day manifestations of prideful arrogance would have been severely condemned in most pulpits thirty years ago, today these words now readily roll off the tongues of modern-day preachers. Robert Schuller, pastor of the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California, is one of the leading proponents of the self-love gospel. His Sunday morning T.V. service, "Hour of Power," has become the nation's most widely watched religious program. In his new book

New Age Religion

"As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed." (Galatians 1:9)
Every culture is either created by a set of religious beliefs or spawns a set of religious beliefs. For the last 30 years eastern mystic religions have increased in popularity in the United States. Some have taken an American flavor, using Christian terminology with new eastern mystic definitions. Others maintain their oriental trappings. They are often referred to as the "New Age movement." The New Age movement is fast becoming the religion of the "new American culture." EASTERN MYSTIC RELIGIONS Many Americans are curious about the number of eastern religions becoming popular and gaining followers in the United States. Zen Buddhism, Transcendental Meditation, Bahai, Hare Krishna, Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church, the Divine Light Mission and a multitude of smaller movements are attracting thousands of young Americans. These eastern mystical religions are confusing and challenging to many Americans because of their entirely different epistemology (theory of knowledge or understanding). Classical western society is built upon the use of facts, objective truth, and reason. Ideas require rational explanations. To the eastern mystic, knowledge is entirely subjective they cannot expect to put truth into words or expect another to understand their religious experiences. Personal inspirations and inner feelings are the basis for everything, and all truth is individual and relative.

[Eckankar] New Age religion emphasizes personal spiritual development
The Salt Lake Tribune, USA June 19, 2004 www.sltrib.com Eckankar ReligionNewsBlog.com The first time Karen Bezoski left her body she was sitting in a parapsychology class at Weber State University in 1971. It was like the frequent stories of near-death experiences, weightless floating and walking into the light, she recalls. Except she wasn't dying. That experience, coached by meditation experts from Berkeley, Calif., led Bezoski toward a belief in reincarnation and "soul travel," which eventually led her to Eckankar , a New Age religion emphasizing the importance of personal spiritual development. Eckankar was founded in 1965 by American author Paul Twitchell, who claimed to be guided by ancient spiritual teachers. It draws on the religious teachings of Jesus Christ, Mohammed, Confucius, Buddha, Krishna, Zoroaster, Socrates and Martin Luther. The faith, with headquarters and a striking white temple near Minneapolis, Minn., is lead by Sri Harold Klemp, who is considered the "Living ECK Master."

Real New Age Religion "Whatever has been, it is what will be. And whatever has been done, it is what will be done. There is nothing new under the sun! Sometimes a person will say: 'Look, this is new.' But really it has previously existed." (King Solomon, Ecclesiastes 1:9-10) If you study Western advertisements, you will see that the most common word is "new." The newest car, the newest fashion, the newest computer, and the newest laundry soap! "New" does not mean better or more effective. So why does "new" appeal to so many people - even more than "tested," "reliable" or "improved?" NEW VALUES?

    David S. Touretzky
Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA 15213-3891 Poster presented at the 28th Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience . November 7-12, 1998. Los Angeles, California. Soc. Neurosci. Abstr.
    Abstract
The Church of Scientology, founded in 1954 by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, is noteworthy among New Age religions for its detailed theory of the nature of mind, the mechanisms of memory and consciousness, and the causes of mental illness. Scientology builds upon Dianetics, an abreactive therapy technique Hubbard introduced in 1950. His work mixes ideas from Freud, Jung, Aleister Crowley, and gnostic mysticism. The scientific trappings of Scientology extend even to instrumentation: a skin galvanometer called an E-meter (electropsychometer) is said to allow an auditor (therapist) to observe the creation or destruction of "mental mass'' by reading the needle movement. On the most advanced levels of Scientology, adherents learn that they share their bodies with body thetans, alien spirits who have suffered traumatic incidents and are too weak and confused to control bodies of their own. Illness can be caused by body thetans. The power of other minds to directly affect one's physical well-being is common to many magical belief systems. But Scientology also incorporates the mind-as-computer metaphor, and makes explicit reference to neuroanatomical structures.
