ocated in Charlestown, the museum interprets the History and Culture of Nevis and the life of Alexander Hamilton, first Secretary of the United States Treasury. T he Island of Nevis formed in a series of volcanic eruptions over a period of approximately 3 1/2 million years, however, it has been .98 million years since the last eruption. Despite this the Island is still volcanically active as evidenced at Bath Spring and several near shore underwater sites. A rchaeological excavations reveal that the first inhabitants came to Nevis about 4,000 years ago. These people relied heavily on the sea and traveled between islands in boats crafted from huge trees. The Museum features artifacts left from these first indigenous people who were followed by civilizations of people who left a series of ceramic styles. S ome issues of conservation concern have been incorporated into the exhibitions at the Museum of Nevis History. These are soil and forest conservation, conservation of the wetlands and sea. Wetland areas at Gallows Bay, Pinneys Pond, Nelson Spring and Newcastle Bay play an important role in protecting land and sea. Coastal wetlands protect land from swells and absorb silt and other pollutants that damage the sea; properly managed they can be tourist attractions. The sea regulates land temperature, provides recreation and seafood as well as an avenue for transportation. Now, the sea is endangered from human activities.

Back to Saint Kitts and Nevis Index The focus of security concerns on the islands has changed over the years. During the Labour administration, which ended in 1980, the possible secession of Nevis and Anguilla was considered the primary threat to security. British paratroopers had to be dispatched to Anguilla in 1969 to keep order during a period of secessionist unrest; nevertheless, Anguilla did secede that year (see British Dependencies: British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, and Montserrat, this ch.). Kittitian forces were more successful at discouraging such activity on Nevis because of its geographical proximity. According to some members of the PAM, personnel of the regular Defence Force and police were routinely employed by the Labour government to intimidate political opponents on Nevis. After the advent of the PAM/NRP government and the movement toward independence as a two-island federation, secession became regarded as less of a threat to security. Accordingly, the regular Defence Force maintained by the Labour government was abolished in 1981. The Volunteer Defence Force was retained, but it did not appear to be active because of the lack of any serious external threat to the islands. Some former Defence Force personnel were absorbed into the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF); Defence Force weaponry and other equipment was transferred to the RSCNPF. Weaponry unsuited to day-to-day police work, such as semiautomatic small arms, was adopted for use mainly by the RSCNPF's Tactical Unit and, later, the Special Service Unit (SSU).

Early Settlers.
The first inhabitants of the islands were pre-ceramic people called Sibonay. They are believed to have arrived about 2,100 years ago from Central America. The next people to colonise the islands were the Arawak who originated from the Orinoco River area in modern day Venezuela. They in turn were followed by the Caribs, again from South America. The Arawaks and Caribs left far more remains than the Sibonay and there are many archaeological sites scattered around the islands. These sites are marked with piles of shells, pieces of pottery, and old flint tools and some rock drawings on St. Kitts. St. Kitts was called Liamuiga , or "fertile land," by Caribs which was a reference to the island's rich and productive volcanic soil. Since 1983 the main mountain peak, a 3,792-foot extinct volcano, is called Mount Laimuiga. Nevis was called Oualie - pronounced "OO-A-LEE" - by the Caribs.

Historical Background.
In 1882 the people of St.Kitts and Nevis were joined together in an unwilling union. Nevisians since that time have always advocated for an independent Nevis. In 1921 In 1961 approximately four thousand persons assembled at Grove Park, Charlestown, in a demonstration sponsored by the United National Movement urging that Nevis secede from St.Kitts. At that demonstration a resolution was moved by the people for Nevis to be separated from St.Kitts. In 1975 , the manifesto of the Nevis Reformation Party was in the following terms: "The Nevis Reformation Party will strive at all cost to gain secession for Nevis from St. Kitts - a privilege enjoyed by the island of Nevis prior to 1882". On the I8thAugust l977 a referendum for secession, organised by the Nevis Reformation Party. Of the 4220 persons who voted, 4193 voted yes for secession, 14 persons voted no and there were 13 spoilt ballots.

Ruined Forts And Empty Glens The Great Glen a chain of narrow lochs marking a giant geological fracture of the land cuts across a wild and lovely landscape of peaks, lakes and rivers overlooked by Britain's highest mountain, the giant Ben Nevis. Ruined forts and glens emptied by the 19th-century Clearances testify to the violence that marked the slow end of the traditional Highland way of life. Achnacarry Achnacarry House has been seat of Camerons of Lochiel since 1660. Present building dates from 1802, has Gothic decoration, crenellated parapet and corner turrets. Clan Cameron Museum, housed in reconstructed 17th-century croft house, commemorates role of Camerons in the armed forces.
