History Education in the United States: A Survey of Teacher Certification and State-Based Standards and Assessments for Teachers and Students
By Sarah Drake Brown and John Patrick
What is the condition of K-12 history education today? Answering this question requires an understanding of how the various states prepare and evaluate their teachers and students. This site offers a snapshot of state policies taken in Fall of 2002, focused on five key areas: teacher certification; content standards for teachers; content standards for students; high school graduation and exit exam requirements; and assessments. The Organization of American Historians and the American Historical Association present this survey to those who seek to measure and improve how history is taught in America's elementary, middle, and high schools.

by Pat Hickey arents have demanded that schools get better. Community leaders have warned that society can ill afford for them to get any worse. And for better or worse, the push to raise academic standards and improve student test scores has clearly become a national obsession. Nevada is no exception. Current expectations could hardly be greater. Feeling enormous pressure for schools to perform better, Nevada legislators and educators are now facing the test of their lives to meet those expectations. The Nevada Education Reform Act of 1997 mandates that higher academic standards be implemented in K-12 schools throughout the state beginning in fall of 1999. The State Board of Education has already approved higher benchmark standards in English, math and science proposed by the newly formed Council to Establish Academic Standards for Public Schools. BDR No. 1: Professional Development Centers Would allocate funding for the next biennium to establish and equip four regional centers for professional development (PDCs) within Clark, Douglas, Elko and Washoe school districts. Teachers and administrators would be trained in the new standards in measuring pupil achievement and analyzing and interpreting test scores, and in teaching higher-level content areas and basic skills such as reading instruction using phonics and basic mathematic computation.

Community Colleges as a Pipeline for New Teachers:
How a PT3 Catalyst Grant is Working to Change State Policy There's much being said about the looming teacher shortage, but relatively little being said about a potentially powerful pipeline for the next generation of teachers: the nation's 1,100 community colleges. The Education Commission of the States (ECS) , with the help of a PT3 Catalyst grant, is studying and working to influence state policies on issues surrounding the role of community colleges as part of the solution to the teacher shortage. The grant is helping ECS's Center for Community College Policy pay special attention to what states are doing to prepare community college future teachers and paraprofessionals to use technology. The grant focuses on three grants in particular-Illinois, Texas and Nevada-with plans to expand. As a result of its involvement with the grant, the state of Illinois has embarked on an effort to develop technology modules for general education courses in science, math, communications and the humanities. Another grant partner, the Texas Association of Community Colleges, has surveyed two- and four-year colleges and found a critical need for technology integration. Several Texas community colleges are using technology to offer alternative certification via distance learning. At least one rurally isolated community college in Nevada is also using distance education to bridge the distance to an accredited program, providing the opportunity for students to earn a baccalaureate degree without leaving the community college campus.
