Credits indicated are by semester for university courses. You may earn a maximum of 60 credits through acceptable independent learning study to apply toward a baccalaureate degree at the University of Nevada, Reno. Criminal Justice majors may take a maximum of 15 credits in independent learning criminal justice courses toward their major. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas awards up to a maximum of 15 semester hours of credit through independent learning toward a degree. Graduate credit
Some graduate credit courses are offered through independent learning at the University of Nevada, Reno. You may register for any of our graduate courses if you have completed a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution. Students who wish to apply for graduate credit but have not established status with the university's Graduate School must pay a one-time nonrefundable application fee of $60. If you take a graduate class and do not have an undergraduate degree, your enrollment is null and void and no financial credit or grade can be received for the class. The Nevada Secondary Course of Study document published by the Nevada Department of Education states that, "Credit may be granted for independent learning courses taken through a correspondence school which is approved by the State Board of Education and provided the course is equivalent to courses offered in the local school district secondary school program." A Nevada high school student is allowed to retake a course previously failed on campus, but cannot take high school independent learning courses to repeat a previously PASSED course in order to improve a grade. Credit is granted by the high school whose requirements you wish to fulfill. It is your responsibility to ascertain before enrollment that the course(s) meet the requirements you wish to satisfy. High school students who wish to take college courses may enroll subject to the approval of the appropriate college or university officials.

    Interstate Reciprocity or Using a Teaching Certificate from Another State
    New York has interstate contracts with more than 30 other states and jurisdictions. As outlined in the Interstate Agreement of Qualification of Educational Personnel, a person prepared in one of the contract states who meets the conditions of the contract is eligible for Initial certification in New York. The conditions are either (1) completion of an approved program of teacher preparation or (2) possession of a valid certificate in the contract state and service under that certificate in three of the most recent seven years. In addition, applicants must obtain qualifying scores on the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations to obtain an Initial Certificate. However, applicants who have not completed the testing requirement may obtain a Conditional Initial Certificate (see below.)

    • Three WCSD employees – Principal Karen Wallis, teacher Diane Domiteaux and Secretary Lea Salling, wrote and illustrated a children's book about the Washoe tribe and its unique language. "Washoe Seasons of Life: A Native American Story" is a historical fiction book designed for children ages 7 to 11.
    • Chef Lee Wilhelm of the regional Technical Institute was named Skills USA/VICA Advisor of the Year at the Nevada State Leadership Conference and competitions. RTI was honored as Skills USA/VICA Secondary State Champion, and 45 Washoe County students won medals.
    • Madelon Isbell, a computer teacher at Roy Gomm Elementary School, traveled to Israel in May 2004 to accept the Recanati prize for Educational Initiatives. She shared the honor with three teachers from the Mevo Hagalil School in the Upper Galilee region of Israel. The award recognizes the email correspondence between students at the two schools that has been going on for the past eight years and resulted in warm friendships between the school communities.
    • Petrina McCarty-Puhl, a science teacher at McQueen High School, participated in NASA's Network of Educator Astronaut Teachers. This new program was established to engage outstanding educators and facilitate communication between NASA and the K-12 community.

    The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards® is rooted in the belief that the single most important action this country can take to improve schools and student learning is to strengthen teaching. The mission of NBPTS is to advance the quality of teaching and learning by:
    • maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do, providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers who meet these standards, and advocating related education reforms to integrate National Board Certification in American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified Teachers.
    The State of Nevada provides incentives in the form of reimbursement of costs incurred in order to acquire National Board Certification, an annual five percent salary increase above the normal salary they are entitled to, and benefits/advantages in licensing.
