Valley hospitals to offer rival plan Rogers: University system to benefit from competition By K.C. HOWARD and PAUL HARASIM
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Click image for enlargement. Rather than build an academic medical center, some local hospital officials favor expanding existing hospital programs. They plan on making that pitch to university system Chancellor Jim Rogers this month. The proposal is at odds with a blueprint for a Southern Nevada nonprofit academic medical center on the city of Las Vegas' 61-acre Union Park parcel. The university system and city officials have been in negotiations with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, also known as UPMC, for months to jointly build and operate the training and research center. "The hospitals are going to go together for the first time in this and make a joint proposal to us," Rogers said. "We're going to kiss a lot of frogs before we decide which prince we're going to take to the dance." Ann Lynch, vice president of government and community affairs at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, asked Rogers to meet with her and other hospital officials Aug. 23 to discuss their proposal, which she said is not completed. But she emphasized that Nevada already has the medical expertise to strengthen and expand the University of Nevada School of Medicine and does not need outside help.

"Starlings were introduced into N. America (New York) in 1890; they have since expanded throughout the continent. Imagine what it must have been like to go birding in the early 20th century without seeing any of these birds!" Funny, some feel that way about crows.

Talks to continue on LV academic medical center By PAUL HARASIM
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Negotiations are scheduled to continue in Las Vegas this week on a proposed academic medical center downtown. University of Pittsburgh Medical Center officials and their counterparts from the University of Nevada School of Medicine have yet to resolve how a partnership would work in the construction and operation of the center. Startup costs, including construction and procurement of both equipment and personnel, have fluctuated between $450 million and $750 million. Without University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, or UPMC, pitching in half, university system Chancellor Jim Rogers said, it probably won't be built. "If it's not 50-50, I don't have an interest," Rogers has said. Nevada can't do it alone, he said. Bond measures, federal and state funding, and private donors are measures being discussed to raise the money. If a partnership agreement is reached, groundbreaking could begin in two years. The proposed partnership, according to Dr. David Blumenthal, a Harvard Medical School professor specializing in health care policy, is without U.S. precedent.
