Statewide Masterplan for Nevada Libraries 2000-2005
Introduction The Statewide Masterplan for Nevada Libraries provides direction and serves as a blueprint for development of library services throughout the state. The plan is based on input from people who attended meetings in every corner of Nevada and also reflects the best thinking of public, school, academic and special librarians. The developing draft was reviewed and discussed at regional meetings in Elko, Las Vegas, Reno and Carson City. The planning process incorporated ideas gleaned from efforts in states with characteristics similar to Nevada on the variables of population, population density and revenue. A planning background document was developed by Elko County Librarian Sara Jones as part of an internship toward her graduate degree from Syracuse University School of Information Studies. Using the above variables, Sara developed summaries and evaluations of planning documents from Idaho, Nebraska, New Mexico and Utah. Sara also reviewed the 1996-2000 Statewide Masterplan for Nevada Libraries to determine which objectives had been met and which activities had been completed. This work demonstrates the overall effectiveness of the plan in terms of impact on library services in Nevada.

    Summary of the program
The Improving Literacy Through School Libraries program is designed to improve student literacy skills and academic achievement by providing schools with up-to-date library materials and to ensure that school library media centers are staffed by well-trained and professionally certified school media specialists. The program is administered by the Department of Education and is the first program specifically aimed at upgrading school libraries since the original school library resources program was established in 1965. Numerous studies* show there is a clear link between the quality of library media programs in schools staffed by an experienced school library media specialist and student academic achievement. School library media centers can contribute to improved student achievement by providing up-to-date instructional materials aligned to the curriculum and instructional practices, collaborating with and supporting teachers, administrators, and parents, and extending their hours of operation beyond the school day.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) is in the process of refurbishing the Lake Mead Fish Hatchery and in the planning stages of designing and constructing a wildlife interpretive center at Overton Wildlife Management Area. The Lake Mead Fish Hatchery, located in Lake Mead National Recreation Area on Lakeshore Road just north of Boulder Beach, is nearing completion of a $24 million renovation that will include a new visitor center. Scheduled to open next spring, the visitor center will focus on the history of fish in the Lower Colorado River, and the preservation of native fish species. Raising trout in the desert, agency partnerships, and angling education will also be part of what you can learn at the new visitor center. Funding for the projects come from a number of sources. The hatchery refurbishment was funded by federal grants, proceeds from the sale of trout stamps, and state Question 1 bond monies. A partnership with the National Park Service allowed for funding for the exhibits through the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act. The Overton Visitor Center will be funded by Question 1 bond dollars. The bond also purchased the property.
