Winter Snow Depth
"Sierra Nevada" is Spanish for "Snowy Range" and the Sierra Nevada lives up to it's name, recording some of the heaviest snow falls in the world. Some interesting records include:
  • 1 day snowfall: 67 inches (5.6 ft.) at Echo Summit, Jan 4, 1982 (2nd in US) Single storm snowfall: 186.6 inches (15.6 ft.) at Donner Summit, 1982 (2nd in US) 1 month snowfall: 390 inches (32.5 ft.) at Tamarack, Jan. 1991 (US record) Total winter snowfall: 884 inches (73.7 ft.) Tamarack, 1906-07 Greatest snow depth: 451 inches (37.6 ft.) at Tamarack, Mar. 11, 1911 (US record) Highest average March snow depth: 108 inches (9 ft.) at Echo Summit
As you would expect, snowfall in the Sierra increases with elevation. The lower foothills only rarely receive any measurable snow. Middle elevations receive a mix of snow and rain during the winter. Above about 6000 ft., the majority of precipitation falls as snow. It is not unusual, in some locations, to have ten feet of snow on the ground for extended periods. However, snow accumulation does not directly follow

As of 15 January 2005, our flagship data product , statewide standardized locations and conditions of at-risk plants, animals , and vegetation types , is created and maintained in a GIS-based data management system called Biotics , developed by NatureServe and used by most state Natural Heritage Programs nationwide. After conversion to Biotics, most of our at-risk species occurrence records remained in the form of representative point coordinates, but a growing number of these are being replaced by actual survey polygons, lines, and/or points as we digitize the data in our voluminous paper files. Our evolving Biotics data set is available in whole or in part to clients as part of our standard fee structure sample downloadable below ), along with a full set of attributes (

Death Valley National Park is located on the eastern border of south-central California and includes a small area of Nevada. Running more than 50 miles southwest-to-northeast and more than 150 miles northwest-to-southeast, it is the largest national park in the contiguous U.S. Ecologically, its plants and animals of are representative of the Mojave Desert; geologists consider it to be located in the southeastern Great Basin Desert. Death Valley itself is a large desert trough nearly surrounded by mountains. It is nestled between the Amargosa Range on the east which includes the Black, the Funeral and the Grapevine Mountains and the Panamint Range on the west which includes the Cottonwood Mountains. The Owlshead Mountains rise at the south end of the park and the Sylvania Mountains border the northern end. It contains the lowest point in the western hemisphere 282 feet below sea level near Badwater as well as numerous high-rising mountain peaks, including Telescope Peak at over 11,000 feet. Death Valley was named by gold-seekers, some of whom died crossing the valley during the 1849 California gold rush. (PDF is an acronym for "Portable Document Format." (last updated: NOTE: I am in the process of pruning the dead links. This should be finished sometime in July. The following compilation of Internet/WWW sites is intended to be an introductory guide to some of the map and reference resources available via the World Wide Web. Consider using one of the WWW search engines if you are looking for a specific type of map or reference. The maps which are listed here have been selected because they are thought to be reasonably useful and/or interesting. They are categorized by geographical region although there are a couple of thematic categories such as Interactive Maps which both highlights the potential of the WWW and are also fun to use. Note that there is some overlap in geographic coverage between these categories. The emphasis is on displayable maps (e.g. images) rather than digital cartographic (GIS) and satellite data which can be found in the separate compilation Geodata Information Sources . There is also another listing which includes Weather Maps and Imagery

Teaching
The courses I generally teach include Physical Geology, Environmental Geology, Structural Geology, Global Tectonics, and an interdisciplinary First Year Studies course called Rare Earth.
Physical Geology is the department's entry level course, providing an introduction to the Earth and emphasizing the processes that have formed and continue to affect the surface of the planet, where we live. Environmental Geology covers a broad range of topics involving human interactions with the physical environment. The course emphasizes geologic hazards and hazard mitigation, surface and groundwater resources and their contamination and remediation, and global environmental change and its potential consequences. Structural Geology is a core course for geology majors, providing a working knowledge of the processes and products of geologic deformation, and significant experience in the creation and interpretation of geologic maps and cross sections.

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS)
Maps and Attributes
Throughout this Tutorial, we have presented photos and images of the Earth's surface and clouds, some accompanied by maps that locate, classify and describe objects thereon. All these objects share a common characteristic: they are visual, miniaturized representatives, or surrogates, of places and classes of features located geospatially on or above the surface, be it land or water. They thus depict aspects of the local, regional, or global geography, which we can locate geometrically in an x, y (horizontal), and z (vertical) plot. We can reference the plot, then, to some form of coordinate and projection system. A map projection is a specific way of transferring points or locations from a spherical globe onto a scaled-down flat surface (the map) according to a systematic, orderly realignment, using a latitude/longitude grid network. Photos (images) and maps are inherently two-dimensional or planimetric, although we can use techniques, such as contours or shading, to present a quasi-three-dimensional appearance or to extract information about relative elevations above generalized datum planes. The most common type of three-dimensional map is the topographic map, which we already examined in Section 11 ( page 11-1) . As we noted in Sections 10 and 11, maps in general nearly always have the following, essential information: graphic distance measures, scale, orientation and direction, projection type, and some geographic coordinate system, along with other descriptors and symbols in an accompanying legend. Topographic maps also have contour intervals.

Nevada - A State Unit Study This mini unit on NEVADA uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study NEVADA. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child's needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about NEVADA and enjoyable for all who are participating. Nevada's State Flag On a cobalt blue background in the upper left quarter is a five-pointed silver star between two sprays of sagebrush crossed to form a half wreath; across the top of the wreath is a golden scroll with the words, in black letters, "Battle Born." The name "Nevada" is beneath the star in gold letters. The current Nevada State Flag design was adopted March 26, 1929, and revised in 1991. Create a State "Infodesk": Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect.
