Rebuild Nevada - Energy In Action
State Energy Program (SEP) Special Project, Nevada, 2004 The Clark County School District project will use the EnergySmart Schools In Action program, a proven model developed by NEF, which is in the seventh year of implementation in the Jordan School District, Sandy, Utah, and the fourth year in Brevard County Public Schools, Cocoa Beach, Florida. This holistic program engages school district administrators, building principals, custodians, teachers, and students in energy use and management in their schools. Quantitative energy savings through behavior modification will be established. The school-to-home program component will allow learning to be applied at home and in the community at large. Local utility companies, Nevada Power, and Southwest Gas will integrate energy education programs to maximize the teaching and learning of wise energy behaviors in school buildings. The Nevada Small Business Development Center will lead project efforts in the local government and commercial building sectors. Ultimate goals of this component are to:
  • Set up a sustainable process for measuring and reporting energy performance results.

: Installed stations listed in table below Manogue High School Installation Sumatra Earthquake The Nevada K-12 Educational Seismic Network establishes real-time seismographs stations in Nevada schools, integrating the earthquake research mission with Nevada science classrooms. Inexpensive as well has high end broadband and accelerographs are used in the network. Local MS Windows PC's in schools collect data from a local digitizer and are connected via the Internet to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory. The real-time data from the school is fully integrated with regional seismic network operations in Nevada ; i.e. used in automatic locations, magnitude estimates, and to measure ground accelerations. Lesson plans will be completed for 2004 workshops.
Schools also receive "live" data feeds from seismograph stations in the University of Nevada Network, western US stations, and global seismograph stations (IRIS BUD Server), as well as "live" feeds from other K-12 sites. Waveform data from remote sites is managed on the local PC so educators and students can interact with waveform data from throughout the world. In most cases, existing school computers can be used. Schools can view significant global earthquake activity as it is occurring ( Records of the M 9.0 December 2004 Sumatra earthquake and aftershocks
