The crew of the Enola Gay trained here to drop the A-Bomb on Japan. The WWII Army Air Corps base is now a warped and tattered remnant, contrasting vividly with the many-splendored present.

Description and History of
Wendover
by David W. Toll
Wendover's luxurious casino resorts huddle at the edge of the Bonneville Salt Flats. From The Complete Nevada Traveler , the Affectionate and Intimately Detailed Guidebook to the Most Interesting State in America. Buy the Book Here ON THE WAY INTO WENDOVER Columbus was right! Almost as amazing as its shape is the earth's texture and color here, spread out in horrid immensity: surely the cruelest desert your eyes will ever see. And where the bleached and crusty sea of alkali meets a shoreline of dead brown hills, is Wendover. This remarkable settlement was established in the 1920s when Bill Smith built a gas station beside the road here. The light bulb he erected on a tall pole was only a tiny speck of light in the black desert night, but for years it served westbound motorists as a welcome beacon as they crossed the Bonneville Salt Flats. Thus Wendover developed as an outpost of civilization in the midst of isolation. Wendover boomed during the war when the Army Air Corps built a bomber training base here. The B-29 crews who dropped the atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima trained for their missions here. Some of the base has been converted to civilian use, but most of it has simply been left to warp and tatter in the baking heat and the scouring winds. The roaring engines of the Enola Gay have faded to a distant drone, gone forever from the hot blue sky.

There were many Spanish explorers in the 1770s who came near the Nevada area, but it wasn't until 50 years later that fur traders venturing into the Rocky Mts. publicized the region.
Nevada's first settlement was Genoa, near Carson City, settled by Mormons in 1849, then called Mormon Station.
Nevada's name was adopted in 1861 when territory was established. The name was derived from the Spanish language, meaning "snow-capped". Nevada was admitted as part of Utah Territory in 1854 and then as the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861.

Bowers' book succeeds in capturing the dynamics of this process. This concise work explains how Nevada government actually works and how the area's history has shaped its political culture."
Journal of the West "This is a volume that would be a worthwhile addition to the bookshelf of anyone looking for a reliable reference work on Nevada government and politics. It will appeal to anyone seeking to understand those subjects in the context of a turbulent past which, in many ways, is strikingly unique among states of the West and the nation."

In 1859 the Comstock Lode silver strike was discovered, sparking the first major wave of emigration into the area. Carson City was named after the Carson River by city father Abraham Curry in 1860. In 1861 the Nevada Territory was formed, and Carson made its capital. Nevada was granted statehood on Oct. 31, 1864. Of the 17 counties in Nevada, only Carson City and Virginia City have remained county seats since the beginning of statehood.

Carson City sits in the center of one of the most scenic and historic areas in the country, making it the perfect starting point for sightseeing. The habitat of the Eastern Sierra must have been a welcome refuge for explorers Kit Carson and John C. Fremont as they rode into Eagle Valley during their 1840s quest to map the West. To the east, long stretches of desert mark the difficult terrain settlers had to endure to get here. To the west, the Sierra Nevada mountains stretch out as a gateway to the Pacific. Kit Carson Trail - Wild West Tour During that time, Northern Nevada saw its first wave of white settlers. The Bidwell-Bartleson party is believed to have made their way through the area in 1841. Westbound traffic increased, spurred by the big boom of 1848-1849 when the discovery of California gold ignited the frontier spirit and transformed Eagle Valley.

Later many wagon trains crossed Nevada on the way to California, especially during and after the gold rush of 1849. Travelers going to California over the Old Spanish Trail also crossed S Nevada, and Las Vegas became a station on the route. Guided by Kit Carson, John C. FrEmont had explored much of the state between 1843 and 1845, and his reports gave the federal government its first comprehensive information on the area, which the United States acquired from Mexico in the Mexican War . These accounts may have aided Brigham Young when he was shepherding the Mormons west to build a new home in the mountains and valleys of Utah. BLM preserves Nevada's history in pictures Collection shows images of America from 1890 to 1970 By SEAN WHALEY
REVIEW-JOURNAL CAPITAL BUREAU

CARSON CITY The scenes evoke some of the strongest images of the West: a wild horse standing majestically with a mountain backdrop near Reno. Huge Joshua trees growing near Pahrump. Others are more mundane, such as images of stock watering or mining developments. But browsing among the 2,500 historical black and white photographs taken for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management from 1890 to 1970 can be a fascinating trip back in time. There are images of Red Rock Canyon from the 1960s. A cattle herd trailing along the Walker River in Northern Nevada in 1940. More than 100 photos of Nevada are on the agency's Web site at www.photos.blm.gov/ and became available in July. The images were digitized and made available because of public demand and can be used for any purpose free of charge, said Jeff Krauss, a public affairs specialist for the agency in Washington, D.C. They cover a wide variety of subjects, from the Oklahoma land rush to ancient Native American sites throughout the West.

The purpose of this site is to provide the active ghosttowner, historians, and arm-chair enthusiast an opportunity to enjoy the many wonderous ghost towns that Nevada has to offer. The main page of the website features a profile of a new ghost town every couple of months. These profiles provide a detailed history, summary of current remains, and when available, photographs. Some places included aren't necessarily ghost towns but fit the accepted description of a ghost town presented by legendary ghosttowner Lambert Florin: "A shadowy semblance of a former self." Please feel free to bookmark this page and visit often. All comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Any additions are always welcome! If you notice omissions or have some photos for listed sites that don't have any, please feel free to let me know and I will make the additions with full credit given to you! Another new addition is a "Ghost Towner Photo Page." This is just for fun and anyone who has "people" photos at ghost towns, please send them to me and I'll put them on the page. As a final note, please respect remains at any ghost town you might visit. These are valuable remembrances of a bygone era that once gone, can never be replaced. Please only take photographs and do not destroy what little remains. These sites are our heritage and must be respected so future generations can also enjoy visiting the ghostly remains of the Old West.

Where The Heck IS California, Anyway? For 200 years Europeans thought California was an island inhabited by warrior women!
Even though many of the emigrants had moved west before, for example from Ohio to Illinois, the trip to California was much longer and scarier than any had even dreamed of before.
In 1849, California was still 2,200 miles away from the United States.
