Glamorous images of Las Vegas from decades past, some in black and white, accompanied by the line, "We're living in the past. Got a problem with that?" It's tied to the hotel's Don Arden Jubilee, a period show from a Las Vegas that doesn't exist any more, a throwback to the girlie shows of previous decades. As grand as Las Vegas is today, with its post-21st Century mega-resorts and theme hotels, many longtime visitors would argue that its sexiest era was during the days Frank, Dino, Sammy, Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford collectively known as "The Rat Pack" were in residence and ruled the roost.

Nevada History- Early inhabitants of the Great Basin (which includes much of modern-day Nevada) were in some respects the least complex of all Native American cultures. They survived by migrating through the area, gathering wild plants and seeds and hunting rabbits and antelope. Their nomadic traditions changed little in 5,000 years. But when they gained the use of horses in the late 1600s, the native people of Nevada underwent a dramatic change in lifestyle, becoming more predatory and dependent on bison hunting. Although Father Francisco Garces, the Spanish Catholic missionary and explorer, may have visited parts of Nevada as early as 1776, it wasn't until the 1840s that the first real explorations were made by Capt. John C. Fremont on behalf of the U.S. (which had acquired the territory after the Mexican-American War). The Mormons, in their long quest for a home free from religious intolerance, were the first to settle a town, now known as Genoa. But the "booms" made the state. In 1859, the discovery of gold at the Comstock Lode near Virginia City set off one of the many mining free-for-alls. Thousands of new settlers went west by stagecoach along the Pony Express route. In 1861, the boundaries of the new Nevada Territory were carved out of the larger Utah Territory. Statehood followed in 1864, after Nevada ratified the 13th Amendment that outlawed slavery. Its mineral wealth aided the Union victory in the Civil War.

The entire backyard is a topographical representations of Nevada.
    http://www.principality-of-paradise.com/nevada_history_yard.htm
    The Nevada History Yard.
The entire backyard is a topographical representations of Nevada. The colors represent different elevations. You can see the white atop of many high mountains found in central and northern Nevada. In Spanish, Nevada means "snowy mountains". The map runs south into the Arizona-New Mexico Territory which was still together at the time context of the map, 100 years ago. Tom Doolan, the artist, used artistic license to include some modern features such as the Test Site and the Stealth Base. Roy Prucell added the discovery trails passing through Nevada a century ago.
The map continues further south into Mexico. The spa represents Mexico city which was built on a lake. The countries of Central America are represented on the wall and along the model of Hoover Dam. The Central American countries are the lands of the Mayan civilization and the Yucatan Peninsula. Belize, formerly British Honduras, can be prominently seen. The country of El Salvador is depicted in red even though the recent election has made this country markedly right wing. Nicaragua is also in red. It is the destination of Lonnie's secret underground railroad called the TransContra-nental Railroad. It is used for covert shipments of arms into Nicaragua.
The next point of interest is the model of Sunrise Mountain. you can see the geological strata dropping diagonally which represent the cross sections of rock seen in the Grand Canyon only 50 miles to the east. This fault is internationally known for its geological findings. Locally it is more known for its interesting shape, its history in relation to the early settlers and the earliest paintings in the Valley. Lately it is noted for the recently constructed Mormon Temple. The model of the mountain was consecrated by an Indian who lives on the mountain and by the local leaders of many religious denominations.

The Clark County Museum – a wonderful tribute to this history, and a showcase of mining and mineral information – was celebrating its traditional Gem and Mineral Fair – held each October in honor of Nevada Day. The Fair is a three day event and features tours of the museum that include a trip down a street of historic period refurbished houses and businesses; a walk back in time from the early hunter-gatherer Indians to the days of the gold rush to the coming of the railroad to the depression, WW I and II, the role of mining during these times, the enormous growth of Las Vegas and right on up into the present. There are old rail cars – a wonderful open air stage for outdoor presentations; native plants, carefully maintained and identified, a superb little gift shop and a friendly and knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. Staff estimates over 2500 people attended this years' fair. The parking lot and drive-throughs were lined with vendors selling mineral specimens, books, fossils, handcrafted jewelry, and magnificent crystals. There were rope makers and gold panners and informational, educational displays as well. Which is where your Association comes into the picture. The NvMA, Nevada Division of Minerals and MK Gold had a booth/display featuring information on mining in Nevada, with the emphasis on education.
