Historic Facts and Overview
The region now occupied by the State of Nevada was held by the Goshute, Mojave, Paiute, Shoshone and Washoe Indians and claimed by the Spanish Empire until the early 1800s. The northern extent of the Spanish claim was defined as the 42nd parallel in the Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819 between the United States and Spain. This north latitude line serves currently as Nevada's northern boundary with Oregon and Idaho. Spanish explorations into this region have never been documented clearly enough to establish any European party constituting the earliest expedition into Nevada. If in fact there was some penetration, it must have been by the Spanish in the southernmost portion of our state, possibly as early as 1776. Trappers and traders, including Jedediah Smith and Peter Skene Ogden, entered the Nevada area in the 1820s. In 1821 Mexico won its war of independence from Spain and gained control over all the former Spanish territory in the area of what is now our "Southwest." Spain had done nothing to occupy or control what is now Nevada, a vast region virtually "

Nevada History - June 2003
Nevada Swings Into the Seventies
By Tony Illia Nevada hit the 1970s in full swing, adding to its already dazzling display of resort casinos and entertainment amenities. In Las Vegas, for example, a number of high-profile projects raised the level and quality of Strip offerings. Notably, Circus Circus, which had opened in 1968 as a $15 million 700-slot casino, built a 15-story, 400-room hotel tower and 850-seat showroom. Developed by Jay Sarno, creator of Caesars Palace, the major addition was financed with a $15.5 million Teamsters Pension Fund loan and completed in July 1972.

Considered by most historians to be the first settlement in Nevada, Genoa was established in 1851, by Mormon pioneers looking to expand their influence over an unclaimed frontier. Originally called Mormon Station, this small corner of the lush Carson Valley became a prominent stop along the emigrant trail to California. One such emigrant was a New Yorker by the name of David Walley. Like many easterners, Walley hoped to find his fortune out west. And fortune he found. Not in the gold fields of California, or even in the Comstock Lode of Virginia City, but in of all things, water. The year was 1862. David Walley, while employed in the Genoa area, was digging a tunnel directly across from the natural hot springs that sat just a mile and a half from town. After experiencing their therapeutic value, Walley, with the help of a partner, purchased the hot springs and the surrounding property. The team immediately erected a tent and began charging $.50 a bath. The enterprise was a huge success and it wasn't long before Walley bought his partner's interest in the springs. Once in control of the property, David Walley sent for his wife and set about expanding his operation. The couple from New York wanted to build a luxurious spa and hotel, in the hopes of attracting the patronage of the wealthy silver barons and other socialites from nearby Virginia City.

History HISTORY OF SHIPS NAMED NEVADA The first NEVADA was a 335-foot, 3850-ton screw steamer built for the Navy in 1863. Because of inferior construction, she was never armed and was sold after nine years.
The second USS NEVADA (BM 8) was a 252-foot, 3200-ton harbor defense monitor. She was built in 1898 and served in the Atlantic until 1906. At that time NEVADA and several of her sister ships were transferred from the fleet to duty at the Naval Academy. They were kept active during the summer months for the annual Midshipmen cruise. She was renamed TONOPAH in 1909 to allow Battleship Number 36 to be named NEVADA and was sold in 1922.
The third NEVADA (BB 36), a 583-foot, 27,500-ton battleship, began her long and distinguished career in 1916. Her Commanding Officer was Captain William S. Sims, who later became Fleet Admiral. She entered World War I at Norfolk, VA as a training ship for the crews of "four-stacker" destroyers and as a gunnery training ship for men who would be the armed guards on merchant ships. In 1918, NEVADA joined OKLAHOMA (BB 37) and UTAH (BB 31) as part of a deterrent squadron to prevent German battle cruisers from breaking out of the North Sea and attacking North Atlantic convoys. The Germans never challenged her. The super dreadnought was a menace to the enemy without firing a shot. Between the wars, NEVADA conducted two diplomatic South American cruises and in 1922 became part of the Pacific Fleet.

The History of the Nevada Rotary Club
The Nevada Rotary Club got its start one afternoon in February, 1922, while Frank Flack, local manager of the Iowa Railway and Light Company, was en route from Ames to Nevada in company with Luther Aasgard, publisher of the Nevada Representative. Frank suggested to Luther that there should be a Rotary Club in Nevada. th th , April 4 th th , and May 2 nd The charter was presented in the Library on May 19 th Number 1182 was assigned. Seventeen original charter members were enrolled. Regular meetings were then started at the Blue Mill Tea Room and continued for about eight months; when Bess Post advised that she would either have to discontinue her dining room trade on Monday, or the Rotary Club would have to dispense with singing. It was finally decided that she would serve the luncheons at her residence, where meetings continued for the balance of the year. During the first year, eleven new members were added. The club then met in the Christian Church, shifted to the Starlite Lounge, and since 1980 has met at Gates Hall on a weekly noontime basis. In 1949, Bob Walters was one of 73 worldwide scholars selected by the Rotary Foundation for advanced study overseas.
