Death Valley National Park is located on the eastern border of south-central California and includes a small area of Nevada. Running more than 50 miles southwest-to-northeast and more than 150 miles northwest-to-southeast, it is the largest national park in the contiguous U.S. Ecologically, its plants and animals of are representative of the Mojave Desert; geologists consider it to be located in the southeastern Great Basin Desert. Death Valley itself is a large desert trough nearly surrounded by mountains. It is nestled between the Amargosa Range on the east which includes the Black, the Funeral and the Grapevine Mountains and the Panamint Range on the west which includes the Cottonwood Mountains. The Owlshead Mountains rise at the south end of the park and the Sylvania Mountains border the northern end. It contains the lowest point in the western hemisphere 282 feet below sea level near Badwater as well as numerous high-rising mountain peaks, including Telescope Peak at over 11,000 feet. Death Valley was named by gold-seekers, some of whom died crossing the valley during the 1849 California gold rush. (PDF is an acronym for "Portable Document Format." Formation of the Lake Tahoe The Sierra range of mountains was formed by shifting tectonic plates during the Oligocene epoch. This caused sinking in the land and created a large bowl-like depression in the earth. About 5 million years ago the volcanic activity caused the bowl to close at the north end. The bowl, thus sealed, began to fill with rainwater and water from melting snow. During the Wisconsin Ice Age, which was about 10,000 years ago, a glacier moved into the area and sent rivers of ice into the newly forming lake. One of these carved out Emerald Bay. As the glacier moved back, its ice melted and caused the level in the lake to rise hundreds of feet. This was forced out through the porous volcanic obstruction at the northwest end. It is at this point that the lake drains into what we now know as the Truckee River. There is now a dam at Tahoe City which regulates the flow of water.

The courses I generally teach include Physical Geology, Environmental Geology, Structural Geology, Global Tectonics, and an interdisciplinary First Year Studies course called Rare Earth.
Physical Geology is the department's entry level course, providing an introduction to the Earth and emphasizing the processes that have formed and continue to affect the surface of the planet, where we live. Environmental Geology covers a broad range of topics involving human interactions with the physical environment. The course emphasizes geologic hazards and hazard mitigation, surface and groundwater resources and their contamination and remediation, and global environmental change and its potential consequences. Structural Geology is a core course for geology majors, providing a working knowledge of the processes and products of geologic deformation, and significant experience in the creation and interpretation of geologic maps and cross sections.

Las Vegas and the state of nevada are located in Southwestern United States Las Vegas is located at the southern tip of nevada in a broad flat basin
    http://www.usatourist.com/english/places/lasvegas/climate.html
    Las Vegas Climate
Nevada is in the southwestern desert.
Las Vegas and the state of Nevada are located in Southwestern United States east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. The entire state lies in the rain-shadow desert formed by the mountain range and receives very little rainfall. The climate is extremely hot and dry. Most of the state only receives an average of four inches (10 cm) of rainfall per year, with more than 250 days of sunshine. Summers are quite hot with temperatures frequently exceeding 100 degrees F (40 C). In the winter months, daytime temperatures are usually a quite comfortable 60 - 70 deg. (15 - 20 C) with chilly nights. Early spring and late autumn are the best times to visit as the days are quite warm and the nights very pleasant.
Las Vegas is a great oasis.
Las Vegas is located at the southern tip of Nevada in a broad flat basin surrounded by barren mountains. The city itself forms a huge oasis in this desert valley. Palm trees line the streets, green grass and flowering shrubs surround the homes. This illusion is maintained by the millions of gallons of water imported from nearby Lake Mead and the massive amounts of electricity provided by Boulder Dam. The land in Nevada is rugged, forbidding and sparsely populated yet strangely beautiful. Most of it looks like the "Old West" as seen in many cowboy movies. The entire state lies in a unique geological formation called the "Basin and Range" area. It it is characterized by hundreds of small parallel mountain ranges interspersed with countless desert valleys. The infrequent rainstorms in the mountains cause violent erosion that carves deep canyons and disgorges sediment into the dry valleys. At times, the mineral-laden water forms broad shallow lakes that dry up in the intense heat leaving gleaming white salt flats.
