Related Category: U.S. Political Geography Nevada [n u u Pronunciation Key Economy Many of the high plateau areas are excellent for grazing, and cattle and sheep raising are important industries. Because of the prevailing dryness and the steep slopes, agriculture is not highly developed, but is devoted mainly to growing hay and other feed for cattle; however, potatoes, onions, and some other crops are also cultivated. Nevada's riches do not grow from its land; rather, almost incredible wealth lies below its surface. Although copper mining is now much less dominant than before, Nevada is the nation's leading producer of gold, silver, and mercury. Petroleum, diatomite, and other minerals are also extracted. The state's manufactures include gaming machines and products, aerospace equipment, lawn and garden irrigation devices, and seismic monitoring equipment. Warehousing and trucking are also significant Nevada industries. Nevada's economy, however, is overwhelmingly based on tourism, especially the gambling (legalized in 1931) and resort industries centered in Las Vegas and, to a lesser extent, Reno and Lake Tahoe. Gambling taxes are a primary source of state revenue. The service sector employs about half of Nevada's workers. Liberal divorce laws made Reno "the divorce capital of the world" for many years, but similar laws enacted in other states ended this distinction. Much of Nevada (almost 80% of whose land is federally owned) is given over to military and related use. Nellis Air Force Base and the Nevada Test Site have been the scene of much nuclear and aircraft testing; Yucca Mountain is slated to be the primary depository for U.S. nuclear wastes.

NV Nevada's name comes from the Spanish word meaning "snow clad" - a reference to the snow-covered peaks of the Sierra Nevada. In October 1864, Nevada was admitted as the 36th state to the Union. Nevada is in a mountain region that includes semiarid grasslands and sandy deserts, and is the most arid (dry) state in the nation. Nevada is a land of rugged, snow-capped mountains, grassy valleys and sandy deserts. It is also well-known for gambling and nightlife. Large, luxurious casinos in Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe and Reno attract visitors from around the world. Virginia City and other historic Nevada towns remind visitors of the gambling prospectors who went west, a century ago, seeking fortunes in gold and silver. Nevada

This activity helps students learn about the geographical elements found in the state of Nevada. The students are active participants in making their own edible map of Nevada and will have fun learning geography while creating a delicious work of art! (Note: this activity can be adapted for use with any state) Instructions: Hang a road map of Nevada in the classroom to familiarize the students with the geographical shape of Nevada. Cut the bottom left corner off of the brownie to resemble the state of Nevada (or whichever state you are studying). Draw a map on a large piece of butcher paper showing the states that border Nevada and place the brownie on the paper. Discuss the geography of Nevada including its mountain ranges, rivers, lakes, etc. Use the chocolate bars (broken into pieces) for the Sierra Nevada Mountains on Nevada's western border. Use the kisses and chips for smaller mountain ranges such as: Goshute, Toiyabe, Silver Peak, Pahrangat, Sheep, Wilson, Delamar, Mormon and Spring mountains.

    Geography
The Sierra Nevada stretches 400 miles (650 km), from Fredonyer Pass in the north to Tehachapi Pass in the south. It is bounded on the west by California 's Central Valley , and on the east by the Great Basin In west-east cross section, the Sierra is shaped like a non-equilateral triangle: the altitude gradually increases as you travel east, until you reach the crest, whereupon the altitude rapidly decreases, forming a steep escarpment . Thus, the crest runs principally along the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada range. Rivers flowing west from the Sierra crest eventually drain into the Pacific Ocean , while rivers draining east flow into the Great Basin and do not reach any ocean. However, water from several streams and the Owens River is redirected to the city of Los Angeles (see Los Angeles Aqueduct ). Thus, some east-flowing river water does make it to the

Digitally colored elevation map of California The geography of California is rich and diverse. There are alpine mountains, foggy coastlines, hot deserts, and a fertile central valley. The state is home to the world's tallest ( coast redwood ), most massive ( Giant Sequoia ), and oldest ( bristlecone pine ) trees. It is also home to both the highest ( Mt. Whitney ) and lowest ( Death Valley ) points in the 48 contiguous states The state is generally divided into Northern and Southern California , although the boundary between the two is not well defined. More specifically, the state can be divided into eleven distinct natural provinces with clearly defined boundaries. They are, from north to south, the Klamath Mountains, the Cascade Range, the Modoc Plateau, the Basin and Range, the Coastal Ranges, the Central Valley, the Sierra Nevada, the Transverse Ranges, the Mohave Desert, the Peninsular Ranges, and the Colorado Desert.

The National Map as a foundation for integrating, sharing, and using other data easily and consistently.
Strong ties across the California and Nevada State line unite the Lake Tahoe Area Partnership Project study area into a cohesive cultural and economic region. In defining the project boundaries, area agencies have specified that the project must include the Tahoe Basin, major watersheds around the basin, and the trade corridor that spans from Reno through Minden, Nevada, south to the Markleeville, California, area. The Sierra Nevada crest line represents both the watershed and the regional boundary to the west. County and 7.5-minute quadrangle boundaries define the remaining project limits.
    Project Data Description
    • Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles
Second generation 1-m resolution digital orthophoto quadrangles (DOQ) for the eastern part of the project area were produced from 1998 and 1999 aerial photographs by the Western Geographic Science Center in Menlo Park, Calif. This was done to replace the existing 1993-vintage DOQs and thereby create a consistent coverage with the western side of the project area, where 1998-vintage DOQs were already available. The data for the entire project area were mosaicked into 7.5-minute quadrangles and converted to GeoTIFF format using Hawk-MP software. These mosaicked DOQs remained in their original Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) zone (zone 10 on the west side of the project area and zone 11 on the east side).
