The Teacher Shortage: Apply, Please!
In some areas, competition over certified teachers has become so fierce that districts are promising signing bonuses, paid health insurance, subsidized housing, and more. Just what does it take to woo or lose a teacher? This week, Education World explores what some school districts are doing to attract and retain teachers. Mix together swelling numbers of immigrant and baby boomer children, class size reduction initiatives, and a graying teacher force. Stir in lack of teacher mobility, inadequate induction programs, poor working conditions, the lowest unemployment in three decades, and a growing salary gap between teachers and other college graduates a difference of more than $32,000 for experienced teachers with master's degrees and you have created the worst shortage of qualified teachers ever. The problem especially acute in urban and rural districts and in the hard-to-fill areas of special education, mathematics, and science is so severe that

Conflict Resolution Education: Four Approaches
Are you "shopping" for a conflict resolution program for your schools? First, you might consider which approach to conflict resolution you will take. In this story, learn about four approaches used in conflict resolution programs. Find out how each actually transforms schools. Included: Resources for learning more about each of the four approaches to conflict resolution education. Conflict resolution is and has been a powerful curriculum force in schools for years; today, even more attention is being paid to conflict resolution education. President, The United States Open University Introduction It is a pleasure to be here with you at this NASPA conference. NASPA members are very close to the heart of what our universities and colleges are about and it is a privilege to have been asked to address you. 2. TITLE Your conference theme is Perspectives from the Leading Edge and 3. MEGA BOOK I call them the Mega-universities and have written a book about them. When I wrote the book there were eleven of these institutions with over 100,000 students each and with nearly 3 million students between them. Today there must be about 15 with nearly 4 million students between them. However, as you have heard, I now face a challenge that makes these numbers look like small potatoes. 4. NEW JOB This spring I will be leaving my two open universities, one in the US and one in the UK to go to Paris, France and become the Assistant Director-General of UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, with responsibility for education. 5. Return to Mentoring Information Categories List The author of this web site has been keeping track of state-level mentoring programs for years. During that time I have seen that it's: 1. Difficult to draw conclusions about the sum of state-level novice teacher programming, because it is in constant flux 2. Possible to look at state level activity from several different perspectives, because of the various and complex themes that weave through beginning teacher support systems. This report takes one view point in presenting and analyzing the patterns in state-wide mentoring and induction programming. That approach views mentoring on a continuum in which assistance of novice teachers is at one end of the continuum and assessment of novice teachers is on the other end. Necessarily, that perspective "colors" how this information is presented and analyzed. What is presented here is:
  • A chart summarizing some of the studies and illustrating the changing picture described above, plus references to all the studies I found.

No. 43 August 11, 2005 IN THE SUPREME COURT OF THE STATE OF NEVADA No. 40636 CITY PLAN DEVELOPMENT, INC., Appellant,     vs. OFFICE OF THE LABOR COMMISSIONER, DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY, STATE OF NEVADA, Respondent.             Appeal from a district court order denying a petition for judicial review of the Labor Commissioner’s decision.  Eighth Judicial District Court, Clark County; Jennifer Togliatti, Judge. Affirmed in part, reversed in part and remanded with instructions. Orin G. Grossman, Las Vegas, for Appellant. Brian Sandoval, Attorney General, and Dianna Hegeduis, Senior Deputy Attorney General, Carson City, for Respondent. BEFORE ROSE, GIBBONS and HARDESTY, JJ. OPINION By the Court, ROSE, J.:             In this appeal, we examine the parameters of the Labor Commissioner’s authority to conduct hearings, render decisions and assess penalties involving prevailing wage issues under Nevada labor law.  We conclude that, under the circumstances of this case, the Labor Commissioner properly heard and rendered a decision on public works project employees’ claims alleging inadequate payment under Nevada’s prevailing wage statutes.  While substantial evidence supports both the Labor Commissioner’s determination that the employees were not paid prevailing wages and his corresponding awards, we nevertheless conclude that the Labor Commissioner improperly assessed the employer a double penalty. FACTS             The Clark County Board of County Commissioners awarded appellant City Plan Development, Inc., a contract to build a public work, Fire Station #26, which was completed in September 1999.  Thereafter, twenty individuals filed wage claims against City Plan.  The Office of the Labor Commissioner issued a notice of violations and scheduled a hearing on the matter.  Former Deputy Labor Commissioner David Hill presided over the hearing and issued a decision adverse to City Plan on June 13, 2000.
