The Alliance for Childhood is a partnership of individuals and organizations committed to fostering and respecting each child's inherent right to a healthy, developmentally appropriate childhood. Members of the Alliance believe that childhood is a critical phase of life and must be protected to be fully experienced, not hurried. They are concerned that children today are under tremendous stress and suffer increasingly from illnesses such as allergies, asthma, hyperactive disorders, obesity and depression, and they advocate for educational and social practices to alleviate the stresses children are experiencing. Transition: From School Into the World Just when a family has thought they have navigated through the difficult and often confusing world of medical care, education, and financial supports they find themselves at the crossroads of leaving the known world of school and into the unknown world of work, college, or post-teen years care. It can often be overwhelming when facing such things as employment, training, further education, housing, and transportation. Many organizations and agencies are here to help the family navigate this process and find those answers they may be seeking. The following are a few of those organizations that the family should contact. Additionally, booklets with information on transition have been provided.

How Many LGBT Parents Are There? We don't know exactly how many LGBT parents are raising children in the U.S., just as we don't know how many people are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Some human sexuality studies have found that 10% of people are LGBT; others, counting only those who self-identify, put the number at 3 to 4% of the population. Numerous social scientists have developed estimates of how many LGBT parents there are by using one well-known population study ( National Health and Social Life Survey , E.O. Lauman, 1995.):
