Azerbaijan: Police Refuse to Protect Adventists Facing Death Threats Police have refused to protect an Adventist pastor in Nakhichevan, who has been threatened by local men with death or being driven out of the community. "People phone and come to my house to threaten us but the authorities have refused to help," Pastor Khalid Babaev told Forum 18 News Service. Pastor Babaev fears for the safety of his wife and son, and does not know if it will be safe to hold a service as usual next Saturday. Local Muslims have threatened to sacrifice Babaev as a holy duty and to halt Adventist religious activity in Nakhichevan. If Pastor Babaev holds another service, he has been told that a mob will be collected to attack his house. The police have refused to discuss the threats with Forum 18, or say what they would do to protect church members from the threatened violence. (Forum 18) TOP BALTIMORE, MARYLAND... At the Febuary 19-20, 2004, annual meeting of the U.S. Church Leaders, Dr. Bert B. Beach represented the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and was asked to make a presentation regarding how church leaders nourish their spiritual life in the midst of pressing administrative concerns. This was in response to Cardinal William Keeler's keynote address. Beach was elected as one of the two organizing co-chairs to prepare for the 2005 meeting, which will take place in Phoenix, Arizona.

DUTCH A Brief Introduction to the Language Some famous Dutch People. Past and Present ... And some vocabulary THE WORD 'DUTCH' The word Dutch should not be confused with German Deutsch Dutch means something like 'from the Netherlands' (in a dictionary definition). A 'Dutchman/ woman' is an inhabitant of the Netherlands. Deutsch , on the other hand, is German and means... German ! Consider 'Dutch' a mistake of the English language; however, the word 'Diets(en)' is still used in the national anthem (thank you to Jos Blij). Wouldn't it be more correct to use the words Netherlander and Netherlandic/ Netherlandish ? That might be an interesting discussion. I once had an American colleague who called me 'Lowlander': a great alternative! If you want to know more about the Dutch people, you should read

Nelson Carrilho
by Mavis de Jonge
One of the most striking characteristics of the works of the visual artist Nelson Carrilho is the direct link with Caribbean culture. The complexity and diversity of Caribbean culture, with its Afro-Caribbean heritage forms an important source of inspiration for Carrilho.
Besides, European influences also play a part in his works. As an Antillean artist, living in the Netherlands, Carrilho is quite consciously in search of the dialogue with the triangle: Caribbean area, Africa, Europe. It is pre-eminently the mixing, the merging of the many cultures that makes his works so powerful and interesting.
Two well-known examples of this are the monumental works Mama Baranka (Mother Rock) and Dragers van Verre (Carriers from Afar). Both sculptures contain clear indications of the Antillean background of the artist and have found their place in the Amsterdam society.
His modern sculptures narrate the cyclic process of departing and arriving in the ancient tradition of the Afro-Caribbean narrative art. Moreover, Carrilho makes use of recognizable symbols: boat, fish, cart, airplane, cross... Playing with recognizable symbols in unorthodox combinations forces you to reflect. An extra dimension is created by using roughly engraved signs in bronze. To the spectator intangible, mythical, almost invoking.
The themes used are universal. Carrilho possesses the gift to depict the snares of modern man in a modern society in a number of striking characteristics. Matters like humor and irony are not shunned. Carrilho allows us a different view of our world.

Artists Museum Cuisine History Carnival Events The cultural diversity of St. Maarten springs from its historical role as a crossroads for visitors to the New World. Dutch, French and British traders brought European traditions, while the Africans brought the language and culture of West Africa. Today the range of influences is reflected in the number of languages spoken. Dutch is the official language, but English is taught in schools and spoken everywhere, while other common languages are Spanish and Papiamento, the dialect of the Netherlands Antilles. St. Maarten's premier cultural event is its annual Carnival, which includes parades, calypso competitions, reggae shows, and an endless array of stands serving traditional island food. Excerpt
Introduction
The present essay will trace a brief historical backdrop suggesting the main cultural connections which generated the literature and other art forms that owe their origins to the Dutch participation in this African and American saga. The technical skill the Dutch gained in their constant struggle at home with the sea proved to be of great value in establishing their bases along the delta regions of the South American continent. The United Provinces States General granted the United East India Company, a trading company founded in 1602, a subsidy and a monopoly for Dutch trading in the world from the Cape of Good Hope through the Pacific. The West India Company, founded in 1621, was given the trade monopoly in the Americas and West Africa and a special mission of supporting the war effort against Spain...

The '''Netherlands Antilles''' ( Dutch : ''Nederlandse Antillen''), previously known as the '''Netherlands West Indies''', are part of the Lesser Antilles and consist of two groups of islands in the Caribbean Sea that form an autonomous part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (none of the other Antilles use this term in their name). The islands' economy is dependent mostly upon tourism and oil , though a large amount of money is also made through illegal drug trafficking.
