News reports say approximately 200 rebels attacked the police station at Tekre Village, about 175 kilometers (110 miles) west of the capital Katmandu on Friday night, the Kathmandu Post newspaper reported. The attack came hours after Nepal's new King Gyanendra urged the rebels to give up arms and join mainstream politics. A gun battle between the rebels and police followed. The policemen surrendered after their commanding officer Surendra Singh was killed. Twenty-five other policemen were flown to nearby hospitals and provided first aid. The newspaper said at least one of the slain policeman was shot after he was captured, with his hands tied behind his back. The rebels had included him in their hit-list as the son of an informer. The rebels have blamed Gyanendra for the June 1 massacre at the royal palace, where 10 members of the royal family including his elder brother King Birendra and Queen Aiswarya were killed in a shootout.

NEPAL - Street Children in Need Nepal is situated north-east of India, near Bhutan. It is a country rich in beauty and natural resources. However, approximately 75 percent of the nearly 20 million Nepalese cannot read or write and poverty dictates their lives. As a result, countless children live on the streets of the main city Kathmandu (420,000 inhabitants). They survive by stealing, begging and sleeping on the streets. The Beginning of NAG In 1992, Nicole Wick (now Thakuri) came from Switzerland to Kathmandu. She was 23 years old and wanted to work as a volunteer with street children. She soon reaslised that instead of returning home to study engineering, she could be of more use here. Present In September, 1993 she opened "Nawa Asha Griha", the "Home of New Hopes", with donations from Switzerland and "Les Enfants du Nepal" in France. She started with six children and, until beds could be constructed, everybody slept on the floor. Now Nicole runs the home together with her husband, Jeeten Thakuri. There are 111 children (57 boys and 54 girls) who are given not only a bed and shelter, but also food, clothing and education; all this in a close family atmosphere, where each member has certain obligations towards the others.
