Nepal is known as the abode of the gods. For many years a secret, unknown country, it was, in the 1950s, faced with making a leap from the 11th century to modern times. Visited first by mountaineers and trekkers, it later became the haunt of hippies. In 1989, restrictions barring several areas to tourists were lifted.
The Nepalese Government has set aside more than 35 per cent of the total area of the country as natural sanctuaries. There are now nine National Parks and three wildlife reserves, located both in the mountainous zones as well as in the tropical plains. The Terai lowlands in the south form the richest habitat in the country. Five protected areas are located in the region and many species of wildlife, including the rare Royal Bengal tiger and leopard, can be observed.

Articles are either in English or Nepali. Contents of SINHAS include:
  • Research-based articles by academics, development workers and social activists
  • Essays and fiction about Nepali history and social life by creative writers
  • Multi-volume book review essays
  • "For a Scholarship of Nepal", an occasional forum for critical reflection on the state of Nepal scholarship.
  • "Commentary", a forum for opinion pieces on subjects of contemporary concern in Nepal by authors with first-hand experience in the area under discussion.
  • Reference Bibliographies on topics of importance to Nepal Studies.
Proposals for submissions in any of these areas are welcome. Please see Notes for Contributors for further information.

Page 2 of 3 rd UN Conference of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in Brussels, Belgium this year. All these Nepalese representatives availed themselves of these opportunities to meet people, share ideas and establish contacts thereby marking the beginning of some sort of networking. A group of 10 Nepalese young men and women representing five MS partners recently visited various advocacy, human rights and theatre organizations in India to explore how theatre can be used as a tool for bringing about a positive social change peacefully. They are about to leave on a study tour of Denmark in mid-January under the "village theatre" programme supported by the Democracy Fund. MS Nepal welcomes Danish students willing to come to Nepal as interns, as per necessity, and is ready to provide all possible assistance to them. Constraints More than a decade after the restoration of democracy the country today stands at a crossroads once again. Despite such provisions as multiparty parliamentary democratic form of governance, guarantee of all fundamental human rights, rule of law, adult franchise, separation of executive, legislative and judicial power, constitutional monarchy, press freedom and equality before law enshrined in the present constitution, the country's democracy has not been able to take the right course. In the last 11 years, there has been a tremendous progress in terms of political consciousness, political debates and intense political participation. However, there has been little progress in most other human capability-related fronts during this period.

WORLDGUIDE Introduction See Image Gallery Events Transport Money Essential Info RELATED Thorn Tree Forum Postcards Travel Links Draped along the greatest heights of the Himalaya, Nepal is a land of sublime scenery, time-worn temples, and some of the best walking trails on earth. It's a poor country, but it is rich in scenic splendour and cultural treasures. The kingdom has long exerted a pull on the Western imagination. It's the kind of country that lingers in your dreams long after you leave it. This is why so many travellers are drawn back to Nepal, armed the second time round with a greater appreciation of its natural and cultural complexity, a stout pair of walking boots and a desire for sculpted calf muscles. Political Unrest Isolates Kingdom Fighting between Maoist rebels and government forces continues to result in sporadic violence across the country. While travellers are not directly under threat, the tense environment can deteriorate rapidly and leave visitors stranded. Travellers are urged to remain vigilant, avoid demonstrations and to not travel when a strike, or

Nepal's royal family; revered and reserved
King Birendra was generally seen as a benevolent monarch By CNN's Craig Francis (CNN) Nepal, one of the world's poorest countries, is a constitutional monarchy. The royal family is widely revered with many believing the king to be the reincarnation of the Hindu god, Vishnu. Although the slain King Birendra ceded absolute power in 1990, he maintained popularity amongst the local population, as evidenced by his birthday celebrations last December, when schools and government offices were closed and hundreds of people lined the streets to pay their respects. The royal couple were married in February 1971. Their first child, Dipendra, was born on June 27, 1971. Two years after marrying, King Birendra was crowned to the throne on January 31, 1972 as a result of the sudden death of his father, King Mahendra He was the latest monarch in the Shah dynasty, which has held the throne since the mid-1700s.

Schwerpunkt: Menschenrechte in Indien
Menschenrechte erheben universellen Geltungsanspruch.
