Nepal has the distinction of being the world's only Hindu state, with about eighty percent of the people following this faith. For a relatively small country, the Nepali landscape is uncommonly diverse, ranging from the humid Terrai in the south to the lofty Himalayas in the north. Nepal boasts eight of the world's ten highest mountains, including Mount Everest on the border with China. Kathmandu is the capital and largest city. The exact origin of the name Nepal is uncertain, but the most popular understanding is that it is derived from Ne (holy) and pal (cave).

85. Nepal - History
Although there are gaps, the sequence of the nepal Valley s history can be traced along with the rise of the Licchavi dynasty in the 4th or 5th century AD.
http://gbgm-umc.org/country_profiles/countries/npl/History.stm
Nepal Nepal Nepal is a landlocked country in the central Himalayas between two of the world's most populated countries; India and China. References to Nepal Valley and Nepal's lower hill areas are found in the ancient Indian classics, suggesting that the Central Himalayan hills were closely connected culturally and politically to the Gangetic Plain at least 2,500 years ago. Lumbini, Gautama Buddha's birthplace in southern Nepal, and Nepal Valley also figure prominently in Buddhist accounts. There is substantial archaeological evidence of early Buddhist influence in Nepal, including a famous column inscribed by Ashoka (Emperor of India, 3rd century BC) at Lumbini and several shrines in the valley. Although there are gaps, the sequence of the Nepal Valley's history can be traced along with the rise of the Licchavi dynasty in the 4th or 5th century AD. While the earlier Kirati dynasty had claimed the status of the Kshatriya caste of rulers and warriors, the Licchavis were probably the first ruling family in that area of plain Indian origin. This set a precedent for what became the normal pattern thereafter (Hindu kings claiming high-caste Indian origin ruling over a population much of which was neither Indo-Aryan nor Hindu). The Licchavi dynastic chronicles, supplemented by numerous stone inscriptions, are particularly detailed from AD 500 to 700. A powerful, united kingdom also emerged in Tibet during this period, and the Himalayan passes to the north of the valley were opened. Extensive cultural, trade and political relations developed across the Himalayas, transforming the valley from a relatively remote backwater into the major intellectual and commercial center between South and Central Asia. Nepal's contacts with China began in the mid-7th century with the exchange of several missions. But intermittent warfare between Tibet and China terminated this relationship; and while there were briefly renewed contacts in subsequent centuries, these were re-established on a continuing basis only in the late 18th century.

    Some history of the khukuri
The khukuri , the national knife of Nepal, is an ancient blade-form: khukuris of five hundred years or more hang from the walls of Nepal's National Museum, dating back to the Malla period. Some have suggested that khukuri design is linked to the ancient Greek kopis knife and that the form was introduced into the Indian subcontinent by Alexander's Macedonian army, which invaded north-west India in the 4th-century B.C. If so, then the khukuri is perhaps also linked to the ancient Egyptian kopesh blade, likely the model for the Greek

Nepal Introduction Nepal Background: In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. A maoist insugency, launched in 1996, has gained traction and is threatening to bring down the regime. Ten members of the royal family, including the king and queen, were massacred in a family dispute in 2001. In October 2002, the new king dismissed the prime minister and his cabinet for "incompetence" after they dissolved the parliament and were subsequently unable to hold elections because of the ongoing insurgency. The country is now governed by the king and his appointed cabinet until elections can be held at some unspecified future date. Geography Nepal Location: Southern Asia, between China and India

There was the Great Migration of our early ancestors (the Aryans) from their ancient homeland, Airyanam Vaejo, in the North Pole due to the Ice Age glaciations that occurred in that ancient age. Their great journey was towards the South and the South-West, i.e. towards Iran, India, Greece, Russia, Germany and other European countries. Our ancestors came from the Iranian plateau and invaded the Indus River valley (in Pakistan) in ca. 1500 B.C. displacing the darker-skinned native population (the Dravidians). Then during the Rigvedic Period (1300-1000 BC), the ancestors spread east and south from the river valley towards India, establishing elaborate priestly rituals (Brahmin) and the beginning of the caste system. Their first journey was towards Sapta Sindhu (seven rivers) (Kashyap Giri or Hindu Kush Mountains). Among them, the Shaks moved southwards and entered Central India (East India of South Sindh) via Shakdwip. The Khas (my ancestors) moved northwest towards the Eastern Himalayas (Maanas Pradesh) - the Northern Hills of Sindh and central Meru, Pamir Plateau, Ural and Chitral, the Hills of Jalandhar and Kashmir Valley. This was around 8th century B.C. Then our ancestors lived around West Badrinath. Around 13th century A.D., after abandoning Kedar Bhumi, Parbat Pundit entered Sinja Karnali (Sijja Sheridhuska village). His elder brother Subal Pundit remained there. Jay Bidhyadhar Pundit (who was free of 36 taxes), the descensdent of Parbat pundit, had 4 sons and this is what they became afterwards:

Modern Nepal was created in the latter half of the 18th century when Prithvi Narayan Shah, the ruler of the small principality of Gorkha, formed a unified country from a number of independent hill states. The country was frequently called the Gorkha Kingdom, the source of the term "Gurkha" used for Nepali soldiers. After 1800, the heirs of Prithvi Narayan Shah proved unable to maintain firm political control over Nepal. A period of internal turmoil followed, heightened by Nepal's defeat in a war with the British from 1814 to 1816. Stability was restored after 1846 when the Rana family gained power, entrenched itself through hereditary prime ministers, and reduced the monarch to a figurehead. The Rana regime, a tightly centralized autocracy, pursued a policy of isolating Nepal from external influences. This policy helped Nepal maintain its national independence during the colonial era, but it also impeded the country's economic development. In 1950, King Tribhuvan, a direct descendant of Prithvi Narayan Shah, fled his "palace prison" to newly independent India, touching off an armed revolt against the Rana administration. This allowed the return of the Shah family to power and, eventually, the appointment of a non-Rana as prime minister. A period of quasiconstitutional rule followed, during which the monarch, assisted by the leaders of fledgling political parties, governed the country. During the 1950s, efforts were made to frame a constitution for Nepal that would establish a representative form of government, based on a British model.

In 1484 the joint rulers divide the state into three kingdoms, named after their capitals Bhaktapura (Bhatgaon), Banikapura (Banepa) and Kantipura (Kathmandu). In 1546 an additional division creates the kingdom of Lalitapura (Lalitapatan) and during the 17th century Banikapura is annexed by Bhaktapura. Since the 17th century also Gorkha comes into existence. In 1768 unifies the last ruler of Gorkha unifies the Kingdom of Nepal under the Shah (Saha) dynasty.
