History
Nepal is strategically located between the two giants, India and China. Legend goes that the Kathmandu Valley was a lake and the Buddhist Manjushri came from china with a magical sword and sliced open the valley to drain the water. Hindus, however, claim it was Krishna who hurled a thunderbolt to create Chobar Gorge. Around the 2nd century BC, the Indian emperor Ashoka visited Nepal and he erected the four stupas around Patan in the Kathmandu Valley. His daughter Charumati is believed to have founded Chabahil in Kathmandu.

Maoist Insurgency: Summar
y For the general public in Nepal, the Maoists were quite an unknown entity until they burst into the scene in 1996. That is understandable in a country which has seen the communist groupings split, merge and split again so many times that only an acute observer will be able to navigate this history with ease. The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) itself was no different and given that the left centre-stage since the restoration of democracy in 1990 had been dominated by the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), the Maoist party (and its earlier reincarnations) was perceived as just one among the conglomeration of factions that spanned the political spectrum from the CPN-UML onward to the extreme left. Late 1960s The origins of today's Maoists go back to the late 1960s. Following King Mahendra's seizure of state power in 1960 after arresting the cabinet and dissolving the elected parliament, all political parties were banned. Within the Communist Party of Nepal, there emerged two groups: one that preferred to work together with the king and the other that demanded the restoration of parliament. That difference of opinion was later formalised with a split that reflected the Sino-Soviet rift, with the pro-king faction allied to Moscow and the other to Peking. Despite the ban, like other political parties, the communist grouping opposed to the monarchy continued functioning, but given the prohibition in place, various local units had begun to operate independently.

http://www.raonline.ch/pages/story/np_mao_sum01.html
The Origins of the Nepalese Maoist Insurgency Maoist Insurgency: Summary Maoist Insurgency: Summary In February 1996, the CPN-Maoist and its political wing, the Samyukta Jana Morcha, United People's Fron t, launched an armed insurgency, declaring a " People's War " in mid-western Nepal to overthrow the government and establish a republican communist state. An estimated 9,000 to 10,000 people have since died in the fighting, which has spread to all of Nepal's 75 districts and involved grave human rights abuses on both sides. The government has dealt with the insurgency as a law and order problem, using police rather than the army in counter-insurgency operations. Throughout and early there were moves to grant the police special powers and establish paramilitary forces, though these stopped short of deploying the army. By the end of the Maoist armed groups were believed to have been involved in violent incidents in nearly all of Nepal's 75 districts, increasing the security risk to civilians. Among the offences reported are forced disappearances, abductions, raids, destruction and looting of property, extortion and other acts of intimidation. The risk of violence and the collapse of services in the worst affected areas are said to have forced some families to flee to safer areas. Thousands of persons have been internally displaced. The long-running conflict between the CPN-Maoist and the government forces became a human rights crisis in , with hundreds of civilians killed and scores of police officials summarily executed. A

History of Nepal Lichavi Dynasty The Lichavis are said to have migrated into Nepal from north India in around 250 A.D. The first Lichavi king of historical importance was Manadeva 1. Another important Lichavi monarch was Anshuverma who opened trade routes to Tibet. One of his daughters, Bhrikuti, who was married to Tibetan ruler Tsrong-tsong Gompo, was instrumental in spreading the Gospel of the Buddha in Tibet and China. Anshuverma has been referred to as a man of many talents in the accounts of the Chinese traveler Huen Tsang, who had visited India in the 7th century AD. Narendradeval another Lichavi king, initiated friendly relations with China and his successors laid the foundations of friendship with India by entering into matrimonial alliances with the Indian royal families. The Lichchhavi rule spanned over a period of about 630 years, the last ruler being Jayakamadeva. Malla Dynasty After the fall of the Lichchhavis came the Malla period during which the foundation of the city of Kantipur (later Kathmandu) was laid. The early Malla rule started with Ari Malla in the 12th century and over the next two centuries grew into a large empire before disintegrating into small principalities which later became known as the Baisi (i.e. the twenty-two principalities). This was more or less coincidental with the emergence of the Chaubisi (i.e. twenty-four principalities). The history of these principalities remains shrouded up until the time when they joined other kingdoms, both large and small, to form the unified Kingdom of Nepal.

The Gurkha principality was later established by RAJPUT warriors from India, and in 1769 they conquered lands beyond the present-day borders of Nepal. After incursions into northern India in which the Gurkhas were defeated, Nepal lost part of its territory to British India but retained its independence and enjoyed close ties with the British. It has maintained its close association with India since the latter gained independence in 1947. Nepal - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Nepal is one of the oldest kingdoms on earth. Its history is rooted in its location between two influential countriesIndia and China. The influence of these countries, and that of Nepal's Asian and Middle Eastern neighbors, has helped to shape Nepal's cultural, political, and religious life. In fact, one of the region's most influential leaders was born in Nepal.
For most of Nepal's history, the Kathmandu valley has been the cultural and political center of Nepal. Its fertile soil made it good for farming, so this land has been populated since Nepal's earliest days. The valley's location along a trans-Himalayan trade route brought some wealth and much cultural influence to the area.
Among some of the early inhabitants of Nepal were the Tarai, who primarily lived in eastern Nepal. A Tarai prince born in 563 BC would ultimately leave his princely duties behind and become a god, quite literally. This prince's name was Siddhartha Gautama. Gautama gave up chasing after worldly possessions to search for spiritual truth. In doing so, he gained the name "The Enlightened One," or Buddha. Buddha, as you can probably guess, is the head of the Buddhist religion. Buddhism was the primary religion of Nepal for hundreds of years, until around 200 AD.
