epal, home to Mount Everest, is dominated by the world's most imposing mountains. Although the country is relatively small (147,181 square kilometers), 80 percent of its territory is occupied by the dramatic peaks of the Himalayas. Nepal was closed to foreign visitors until1951, a situation which contributed greatly to its mystique in the west. This small, hospitable country has since become an exceptionally popular destination for travelers, whether they are in search of climbing challenges or spiritual enlightenment. Nepal can be divided into three geographical regions, each stretching from east to west across the country. The southernmost strip of land, the Terai, is bordered to the north by Himalayan foothills and to the south by the Ganges River. The area was originally covered with tropical vegetation, but has been almost completely converted to agricultural production. The Terai is now the breadbasket of Nepal and is covered with farms.

  • Worksheet: "Snapshot of Nepal" Activities:
  • Review the meaning of location, place, relationship, and/or movement (See "Background Information for Teachers," ). Have students give examples of each theme in relation to your town and state. Brainstorm a list of facts about Nepal. Encourage students to consider facts that illustrate the theme or themes you would like to emphasize. After reading "Snapshot of Nepal," ask students to add to your initial list.
  • As a class, brainstorm a list of facts about Nepal. Encourage students to consider the categories touched on in "Snapshot..." by asking "What about the people? What about the land?" and so on. Categorize the facts. After reading "Snapshot," ask students to correct or add to their facts. Alternatively, post sheets of newsprint around the room labeled with such categories as "Religion," "Geography," "Links to the U.S." and so on. Give students ten minutes to wander around jotting down any information they know in the appropriate categories. (Note: This can also be used as a review activity at the end of the unit.)
  • Have students skim the "Think about It" questions before reading "Snapshot." Work individually, in pairs, or as a group to respond to the questions.

    Geography of Nepal
A landlocked country the size of Arkansas Sandwiched between two Asian giants, China and India, Nepal traditionally has been characterized as "a yam caught between two rocks." Geographic coordinates is 28 00 N, 84 00 E. Its shape is roughly rectangular, about 650 kilometers long and about 200 kilometers wide, and comprises a total of 147,181 square kilometers of land. It is slightly larger than Bangladesh or the state of Arkansas. Nepal is a landlocked country, surrounded by India on three sides and by China's Xizang Autonomous Region (Tibet) to the north. Such a confined geographical position is hardly enviable. Nepal is almost totally dependent on India for transit facilities and access to the seathat is, the Bay of Bengal, even for most of the goods coming from China. Topography: Mountainous and Hilly, although with physical diversity Noted for its majestic Himalayas, which in Sanskrit means the abode of snow, Nepal is very mountainous and hilly. It contains eight of world's 10 highest peaks Nepal is topographically divided into three regions: the Himalayas to the north, the hills consisting of the Mahabharat range and the Churia Hills, and the Terai to the south. The Himalayas and the region of hills and valleys cover about 80 per cent of Nepal. The Tarai (or Terai), a flat, fertile river plain along Nepal's border with Indiacovers the rest of the country. Elevation varies in the kingdom - the highest point is Mt. Everest (8848 m) in the north and the lowest point (70 meters above sea level) is located at Kechana Kalan of Jhapa District.

    Alternative Education Project
The project has aimed to establish low cost, community managed Non-Formal Education classes with flexible hours and child friendly teaching methods. This project is being implemented in the rural areas of Sindupalchowk. In a period of 9 months, these classes will prepare children between the ages of 11-16 years to be qualified for grade 5 in government schools. Similarly children aged between 6-10 years will have 4 months NFE class to mainstream them in grade 4 of government schools. Both types of classes use available curriculum developed by the government or others.
Decentralized Child Focused Education Management Information System
SC UK in collaboration with the Ministry of Education/Department of Education is piloting Community Based EMIS in some villages of Surkhet district. This project aims to mobilize the community including children, parents, teachers, and community workers to collect information, analyze it and use it. Each child and her/his education status will be recorded and updated. People themselves will prepare the education plan, define the role of each stakeholder on the basis of information and implement it.
Right to Basic Education for Dalit Girls
Despite provisions of many facilities for primary education in Doti district by the government, girls from lower caste families are not included. The project aims to build interest, motivation and commitment among lower caste girls themselves, their parents, teachers, and other local community people to bring and retain them in primary schools. SC UK is implementing this project in partnership with a local NGO called Community Development Center.
