Art of Nepal
Nepali art has been deeply influenced by religion since very early times. Early art of Nepal can be seen as stone sculpture and temple architecture. Other art include Newari Paubha and Tibetan Thanka paintings, wood and metal crafts, ceramics and clay pots, textiles, paper, Tibetan carpet, music and literature. Contemporary Nepali art represents two distinct segments, traditional idealistic paintings and the contemporary western style works. The contemporary painting is specially noted for either nature based compositions or compositions based on Tantric elements or social themes. Nepali painters have also earned international reputation for abstract works based on these themes.
Kathmandu Valley houses a number of museums and art galleries displaying art work of the past and present. Some are: The National Museum at Chhauni, Museums at Kathmandu Durbar Square, Museum of Natural History at Swayambhu, National Library at Puchowk, Kaiser Library at Thamel, National Birendra Art Gallery at Naxal, Asa Archives at Tangal, National Art Gallery at Bhaktapur Durbar Square, National Woodworking Museum at Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Bronze and Brass Museum at Bhaktapur, Nepal National Ehnographic Museum at Bhrikuti Mandap. Museums outside the Kathmandu Valley are such: Dhakuta Museum, Hattisar Museum in Bhimphedi, Mustang Eco Museum in Jomsom, Tharu Cultural Museum in Thakurdwara and International Mountain Museum in Pokhara.

Nepal's River Systems Rafting Permits Rafting Arrangements ... Marshyangdi River Trip
Our intention here is to give the visitor the answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Rafting in Nepal.
General Informations
Rafting alog Nepal's mountain rivers has become increasingly popular and Nepal has become almost as well known for its whitewater rafting as for its trekking. In fact many of the adventure trips to Nepal combine rafting and trekking expeditions. The rivers of Nepal are recognized as among the very best in the world for rafting and kayaking, with many runs providing the thrill of some of the world's finest rafting rivers while passing through unrivalled scenery covering a wide range of alpine and sub-tropical environments. No special experience is required for a rafting trip. As long as you don't mind doing some paddling and have no objections to wet clothes you're a suitable candidate for a whitewater trip. There are various levels of difficulty or ease-according to the stretch of river and the season, and you cerainly don't have to be an expert, or indeed have had any previous experience of rafting, to be able to enjoy and take copetent part in an organized, lower grade run. What is required is at least moderate physical fitness and some affinity for water. On the more challenging rivers this is not recommended unless you are experienced in rafting or kayaking, but it is possible to hire equipment (mainly in Kathmandu and Pokhara) and some rivers would be ideal for independent rafters. It is important to consult one of the reputable rafting companies in Nepal for conditions of the rivers you are intending to raft before setting off.Himalayan rivers are more active than most.

http://www.unesco.org/kathmandu/culture.htm
The Culture Unit of UNESCO/Kathmandu is involved in a range of activities in pursuit of the Organization's goals. One focus has been the built heritage, where a number of small projects have been supported to restore and renovate sites around Kathmandu. A second area of activity has been the "intangible culture". By this is meant expressions of unique cultural identity such as indigenous languages, traditional folklore, music and dance. To date our activities in this vast field have been concentrated on the many endangered languages of Nepal. The Culture Unit also plays a role at the national level as an advocate and interpreter of UNESCO policies. In this context the state of preservation of the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage Site, and the problem of the illicit traffic in the cultural property of Nepal are two areas in which we have been active. The architecture and heritage expertise of the Unit's small staff has enabled us to provide advice and guidance to numerous NGOs and other agencies interested in cultural issues in Nepal.

Nepal unfortunately is not only the land of charming mountains, but also the third poorest country on earth. Most of the nepalese people live at the minimum of existence. diseases like leprosy, tuberculosis, cholera and diarrhoeal diseases kill each year uncounted persons, above all children and poor persons. In spite of that the nepalese people are known for their hospitality, cheerfulness and openness. This can make you come here more than once.
The nepalese society is strongly influenced by Hinduism. Which can be observed in the ruling caste system and the interconnected consciousness of the people. It is a society in change. Before 1991 citizens' freedom was not acknowledged. The current Government type in Nepal is a parliamentary democracy with the king as chief of state. Nepal is the only country in the world where Hinduism is declared the state religion by the constitution.
Many young Nepalese don't want to follow their original traditions anymore and orient themselves towards western societies. The population of Nepal is about 23 million people, of whom 2 million live in the capital Kathmandu and the surrounding valley. More than 50% of all Nepalese are younger than 21 years. There are more than 30 ethnical groups living peacefully together in Nepal.

The various invasions in Nepal have contributed to its diverse cultures accommodating manifold food habits and several forms of art and architectural delights. In fact Nepal.s strategic placement amidst India, Tibet and Bhutan has helped in creating a third space of culture among all these countries. This has produced quite a few numbers ethnic and linguistic patterns throughout the country. Apart from that several dialects like Rai, Limbu and Newari are also in use. Though the majority of the populations are now Hindu, Buddhism is still practiced by many. Thus there are numerous temples and monasteries to be found in the country. Various incarnations of gods and goddesses are worshipped in the country, but the most interesting one is the avatar of the Kumari Devi. The Kumari Devi is a young girl living in a mansion called the Kumari Ghar, which is beside the Durbar Square. The worship of the Kumari or the girl child is considered a source of cosmic power and is practiced in quite a few ancient religions around the world. In fact the worship of the Kumari Devi is a practice both among the Hindus as well as the Buddhists in the country bringing about a religious harmony in the society. The process of choosing the Kumari Devi is quite a tedious task since she should have 32 aspects of perfection within her including the sound of her voice and the color of her eyes, and her horoscope details.

Escalating "disappearances" amid a culture of impunity
Introduction

Amnesty International is deeply concerned about the escalating number of "disappearances" occurring in Nepal. These are taking place in the context of counter-insurgency operations by the security forces, in their response to the "people’s war" being fought by the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) (Maoist) since 1996.
Amnesty International has recorded 622 cases of "disappearance" in Nepal since 1998, over half of which have occurred since the breakdown of the most recent ceasefire on 27 August 2003.(1) This represents an alarming increase in the scale of the problem, with an average of more than one case reported to Amnesty International each day since the ceasefire ended. Amnesty International also receives frequent reports of obstruction by the security forces of efforts by the courts and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)(2) to investigate these cases, signalling a growing culture of impunity for human rights abuses by the state.
In addition to these widespread "disappearances", Amnesty International has received reports of hundreds of extrajudicial executions, thousands of arbitrary arrests and widespread torture by security forces.

It's a poor country, but it is rich in scenic splendour and cultural treasures. The kingdom has long exerted a pull on the Western imagination. It's the kind of country that lingers in your dreams long after you leave it. This is why so many travellers are drawn back to Nepal, armed the second time round with a greater appreciation of its natural and cultural complexity, a stout pair of walking boots and a desire for sculpted calf muscles. Political Unrest Isolates Kingdom Fighting between Maoist rebels and government forces continues to result in sporadic violence across the country. While travellers are not directly under threat, the tense environment can deteriorate rapidly and leave visitors stranded.
