Scottsbluff is centrally located in Scotts Bluff County in western Nebraska approximately 20 miles from the Wyoming border and just 110 miles from Colorado's Front Range. Scottsbluff is located on the north side of the North Platte River. Scottsbluff is the largest city in the western Nebraska Panhandle Region. U.S. Highway 26 and State Highways 71 and 29 serve Scottsbluff. The community is 103 miles from Cheyenne, 200 miles from Denver, 396 miles from Lincoln, and 452 miles from Omaha. Top of Page
HISTORY
Scotts Bluff County A fur trapper by the name of Hiram Scott gained a certain immortality by dying, alone and deserted by his companions, at the base of a magnificent formation of bluffs along the North Platte River about 1828. Many others died near this spot on the old Oregon and Mormon Trails, but it was Hiram Scott for whom Scotts Bluff, Scotts Bluff County, and the city of Scottsbluff have been named. Scotts Bluff County was originally a part of Cheyenne County, but as the homesteaders began to stream into western Nebraska in 1886 and 1887, they wanted a county seat much nearer than far-away Sidney. In 1888, an election resulted in the creation of Scotts Bluff, Kimball, Banner, and Deuel Counties and a greatly reduced Cheyenne County. Gering, one of the first towns in the Panhandle and a leader in the movement for partition, became the county seat of Scotts Bluff County.

Rep. Tom Osborne (NE-03) Week of May 9, 2005 Investing in the Future of Our Youth Over the past few years, I have visited several schools throughout the Third District that are seeing real results from their entrepreneurial programs practiced in the classroom. But students are not the only ones benefiting—the entire community reaps rewards from entrepreneurial programs. In some schools where an entrepreneurial curriculum is utilized, teachers have worked to engage students in e-commerce. In one notable example, the Santee High School, located on the Santee reservation in northeast Nebraska, has developed an entrepreneurship curriculum to help young people on the reservation learn the business skills necessary to reverse poor economic conditions in the community. In yet another example, the Wolf Den Market in Arthur, Nebraska, the only grocery store in the county was developed and planned by students from the Arthur County High School. The students and a few key adults in the community researched the viability of opening a grocery store and sought financial assistance to make the idea a reality. In this case, as a result of the students’ ability to learn and sharpen their problem-solving skills in the classroom, Arthur’s residents now have suitable grocery essentials at their convenience.

Appendix A. Methodology Fast Response Survey System Sample Selection for Survey on High School Guidance Counseling The sample for the FRSS survey on high school guidance counseling consisted of 1,001 secondary schools in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. It was selected from the 1999-2000 NCES Common Core of Data (CCD) Public School Universe file, which was the most current file available at the time of selection. The sampling frame included 16,897 regular secondary schools. For the purposes of the study, a secondary school was defined as a school with a highest grade of 11 or 12. Excluded from the sampling frame were schools with a highest grade lower than 11, along with special education, vocational, and alternative/other schools, and schools in the U.S. territories. The public school sampling frame was stratified by enrollment size (less than 300, 300 to 499, 500 to 999, 1,000 to 1,499, and 1,500 or more), and poverty concentration as defined by the percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch (less than 35, 35 to 49, 50 to 74, and 75 to 100 percent).

Central Community College Northeast Community College Southeast Community College Western Nebraska Community College Thousands of motor vehicles are damaged in traffic accidents every day. Although some are sold for salvage or scrapped, most can be repaired to look and drive like new. Automotive body repairers straighten bent bodies, remove dents, and replace crumpled parts that are beyond repair. Usually, they can repair all types of vehicles, but most body repairers work on cars and small trucks. A few work on large trucks, buses, or tractor-trailers. When a damaged vehicle is brought into the shop, body repairers generally receive instructions from their supervisors, who have determined which parts are to be restored or replaced and how much time the job should take. Automotive body repairers use special machines to restore damaged metal frames and body sections to their original shape and location. They chain or clamp the frames and sections to alignment machines that usually use hydraulic pressure to align the damaged metal. Unibody designs, which are built without frames, must be returned to precise alignment, so repairers use bench systems to guide them and measure how much each section is out of alignment.

Chapter XIV: Stoddard Brings "Informal Education" Go back to Chapter XIII Chapter XV [This information is from pp. 167-175 of by Jeanette G. Neisuler (Schenectady: Board of Education, City School District, 1964), and is reproduced here with the permission of the author. It is in SCPL's Schenectady Collection at Schdy R 370.9747 N41, and copies are also available for borrowing No one realized in 1926, when Dr. Alexander J. Stoddard took over the office of Superintendent of the Schenectady School System, that the rosy bloom in Economy's cheek was just the warning flush of inner disease. Jobs were available for the asking, pay envelopes were well-filled, and the City Council was not unsympathetic toward requests for school monies. Into the midst of this radiance came the new Superintendent from Bronxville, New York, where he had been serving in a like position since 1922. Born in Auburn, Nebraska, in 1889, Dr. Stoddard early chose teaching as a career. At the age of sixteen, he was already teaching in rural schools in Nebraska, and within two years after that, he had become principal in an elementary school in the place where he was born. From 1910, when he was graduated from Peru State Teacher's College, until 1922 when he came to New York, he held superintendencies in three Nebraska school systems. In 1922 he received a degree of B.S. from the University of Nebraska, in 1923, an M.A. from Columbia University and in 1933, the degree of Ed.D. from Rhode Island College of Education.

The New American High School Conference
This event, held in Washington, D.C., on May 22-24, 1996, was extraordinary. It represented a new kind of collaborationfrom the nomination process to site selection to site visits to conference planning to conference executionbetween the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Vocational and Adult Education and NCRVE. The conference itself involved an impressive array of 65 cosponsoring national associations representing education, business, labor, parents, community groups, and state and local government (see accompanying box listing cosponsoring organizations). The purpose of the invitational conference was to showcase 10 high schools selected from the 31 site visits and more than 170 nominations nationwide. These schools are making great strides in preparing students for college and careers at the same time. While they differ in important ways, all 10 schools share a commitment to comprehensive restructuring so that all students have opportunities to:
  • achieve high levels of academic and technical skills
  • prepare for college and careers
  • learn in the context of a career major or other career interest
  • learn by doingin classrooms, workplaces, or community service
