...Our History
Throughout the United States, community colleges are the largest and fastest growing segment of higher education. In this decade nearly six million students have registered for credit courses in more than 1,200 public community colleges. Most community colleges began in the 1960’s; however, Western Nebraska Community College, with a very unique history, was established in Scottsbluff in September 1926. Originally established as an extension of the University of Nebraska, Western Nebraska Community College was named Scottsbluff Junior College. The College was closed after only one year of operation and was reopened in September 1929 as part of the Scottsbluff Public School System. The College operated as a part of that system until September 1932 when it became a public, two-year institution. In May 1965, a bond issue was approved for the construction of a new campus. In June 1968, Scottsbluff Junior College became Nebraska Western College. In 1965, Western Nebraska Vocational Technical School was founded by the State Legislature in Cheyenne County at the Sioux Army Depot approximately twelve miles west of Sidney. In October 1966, classes began at the technical vocational school. In 1971, the school changed its name to Western Nebraska Technical College. In 1973, the State Legislature formed the Western Technical Community College Area which included Nebraska Western College, Western Nebraska Technical College, and the Alliance School of Practical Nursing. On July 1, 1978, the Area Board of Governors placed all three entities into a single college, multiple campus setting.

THE NEBRASKA RELIGIOUS COALITION FOR SCIENCE EDUCATION
Presented to the Nebraska Academy of Sciences in Lincoln, NE, April 25, 2003 by C. Austerberry, Ph.D.
Abstract
Recently adopted science education standards in Nebraska and other states are controversial. Evolutionary explanations for species' origins that incorporate Darwinian mechanisms of random variation and natural selection are deemed incompatible with the creation teachings of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism in the minds of some Americans today, including theists who oppose evolution as well as atheists who oppose religion. However, survey and case study data suggest that most scientists and science teachers view evolution as compatible with religious faith, as do many of the major religions' governing bodies in the United States. The Nebraska Religious Coalition for Science Education (web site: nrcse.creighton.edu ) is a new network of Nebraskans from diverse religious faiths with the shared conviction that academic freedom, religious freedom, and scientific integrity are indeed compatible. It is the NRCSE's position: 1) that evolution is a viable scientific theory, 2) that a Creator is a viable theological proposition, and 3) that creationism ("creation science") and intelligent design theory lack evidence and represent erroneous deviations from the scientific method. The NRCSE recognizes the duty of Nebraska's schools to help students understand the best available science. We believe that evolution can and should be widely taught in a scientifically sound and metaphysically neutral manner.

We are a class D1 school. The school is a member of the Pioneer Conference which consists of fourteen schools including Nemaha Valley, Humbolt-Table Rock-Steinaur, Southeast, Johnson Brock, Pawnee, Nebraska City Lourdes, Brownell-Talbot, Dawson-Verdon, Diller-Odell, Freeman, Sterling, Lewiston, Nebraska City Lourdes, and Sacred Heart. History of Southeast Consolidated School In 1966, the schools of Shubert, Nemaha, Bratton Union, Higgins, and Stella joined to form Southeast Consolidated. From the beginning the emphasis has been on a superior academic program from the civilization of young minds. However the need to exercise young muscles has also not been overlooked. The uniforms of Columbia Blue, Red, and White have become a familiar sight within the gyms of Nebraska High Schools. The Mustangs have succeeded in a variety of forms. The girls volleyball teams of 1972, 1978, 1994, 1995, 1996, and 1997 were notable. An excellent girls basketball team of 1988 competed in state competition. The boys basketball team competed in 1976 for the class C state championship and were ranked near the top at the close of their 21-1 winning season. Both boys and girls basketball teams have recently made district playoffs for several years. The boys football team competed in the state playoffs in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998.

Part 3 GENERAL HISTORY During November, 1866, the Union Pacific Railroad was completed to North Platte, and a town was laid out here by the railroad company, though the plat of the town was not filed in the office of the County Clerk until the 31st of the following January. This town was made the terminus of the railroad until the following year. As soon as the town was laid out, it began to grow with rapidity, and the Government at once made it a military post, and a garrison of soldiers were stationed here. Early in 1867, the railroad company began the erection of their machine shops and round-houses at North Platte. Until this time, property in the county had not been assessed. In April of this year, at a meeting of the County Commissioners, the Sheriff was ordered to assess all property in the county. The railroad was in the spring completed to Julesburg, and the terminus removed to that point.

    No state in the Union has a greater investment in public media than Nebraska, and no state has done more to ensure that its facilities – and its thinking – are state-of-the-art. Nebraska Educational Telecommunications (NET) is the engine-room of this enterprise, largely financed by the state government and its educational institutions, but with many of its individual projects funded by federal grants. Molded by its geographical location on the plains, it has been a pioneer first of correspondence learning, then of distance communication and learning, and now of interactive media development for all kinds of education and information. The amount of activity is awesome. NET is the umbrella organization that includes the eight state-licensed stations of the Nebraska ETV Network, a s well as KUON/Channel 12 in Lincoln, which is licensed to the University of Nebraska, and the nine state-funded radio stations that make up the Nebraska Public Radio Network. In addition to over-the-air broadcasting, it has: NEB*SAT, a 28-channel satellite system that provides communications for educational and state government services, as well as public broadcasting;
