THE STATE OF NEBRASKA
American Smelting and Refining Company's Buildings, Omaha
A branch experimental state farm was located at North Platte. A system of junior or summer state normal schools was established, an act requiring railroads to give elevator firms or associations equal shipping privileges, and an act to compel the destruction of prairie dogs by the owners of the land where the dog towns were located. The changes in the physical map of Nebraska deserve a paragraph. The original territory of Nebraska was bounded on the north by the British Possessions, on the west by the Rocky mountains, on the south by the 40th degree of latitude, and on the east by the Missouri and White Earth rivers, including a large part of what is now the states of North and South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado. By the act of March 2, 1860, the Territory of Dakota was created, including the region north of the 43rd degrees of latitude, the Keya Paha and Niobrara rivers. The same act added to Nebraska a tract of country west of the Rocky mountains which had been part
SEMI-CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF NEBRASKA of Utah and Washington. By the act of February 28, 1861, Colorado was organized, cutting out a part of the southwest corner of Nebraska. Idaho was organized in March, 1863, taking that part of Nebraska west of the 104th degree of longitude, our present western limit. In 1882 the triangular tract between the Niobrara, the Keya Paha, the Missouri, and the 43rd degree of latitude was added to Nebraska and became subsequently Boyd county. Since then the only changes in Nebraska's boundaries have been slight ones along the Missouri river, the result of changes in its channel and negotiations with Iowa, Missouri and South Dakota.

Schools and businesses have been constructed, and many tribes now share the political spotlight in Washington. The $21 billion business has also raised several questions about the gambling business, including revenue sharing, regulatory changes, economic development, off-reservation gambling, internal management and social repercussions. As Indian gambling approaches its 25th anniversary, national Indian gaming experts discuss the future of the business during a televised Town Hall meeting Aug. 13 at the Nebraska Educational Telecommunications (NET) studios before a live audience during the Native American Journalists Association’s 21st Annual Convention in Lincoln, NE.

economic, and social upheavals to sell their newspapers and magazines. Cite examples to illustrate how nebraska newspapers engaged in yellow
http://mynptv.org/sportsFeat/pioneer/hc_resources/hc_lessplan3.html
Lesson 3 The 1920's Overview:
The second and third decades of the twentieth century represent a dichotomy of historical events. On the one hand, there was the optimism of the "Roaring Twenties" that followed World War I. On the other hand, a growing pessimism developed as people began to realize the war did not make the world "safe for democracy" nor did it ensure economic prosperity. Yet, in 1923, Nebraska decided to erect a new football stadium to honor those who sacrificed their lives in World War I. Memorial Stadium was built primarily with funds provided by loyal football fans during a time of increasing economic depression.
Adversity can also spawn a side of human nature that manifests itself in destruction and hate. Some Nebraskans engaged in attacks on Greek immigrants, African Americans, Catholics and political radicals. The Palmer Raids of 1919-1920 and violent strikes in the meat packing industry in Omaha in 1917 and 1921 were examples of violence that erupted in Nebraska as well as across the nation. The success of the Bolsheviks in the second revolution in 1917 in Russia struck terror in the hearts of some Americans. Workers strikes were often viewed not as attempts to gain a fair living wage, but rather as the dangerous influence of communism. Recent immigrants from Eastern Europe were often the targets of anti-radical threats and at times even violence.
