Nebraska and Carnegie Libraries
by Marguerite Nesbit. 1930.
Typed manuscript. Nesbit tells a colorful, personalized story of the history of Nebraska and the development of its libraries from the creation of the State Library in 1854 to 1929. Libraries built in Nebraska with Carnegie grants between 1901 and 1922 are featured along with a biography of Andrew Carnegie, the great library benefactor. The foreword includes a list of tax-supported non-Carnegie libraries. A chart showing organization and building dates for 68 of the 69 Carnegie libraries and a bibliography of Nesbit's sources are appended. Accompanied by a collection of Carnegie library photographs.

Systems may be different but they also cooperate on many projects to provide continuing education, training, technology, and fun to their members. All systems cooperate in a biannual Leadership Institute based on the Snowbird Leadership Institute; a preconference to the annual NLA/NEMA Fall Conference; a periodic Bricks n' Boards Workshop for potential new and/or remodeled library building projects; and cooperative grants that benefit libraries across the state. Fun projects have included a 50s Sock Hop at the NLA/NEMA Fall Conference and chartering a bus to make the trip to the MPLA conference in Denver last fall. Plans are underway to do the same thing for the MPLA Conference in Jackson Hole . Eastern Library System
While the Regional Library Systems in Nebraska work together, we also do our own thing. The Eastern Library System (ELS), consisting of seven counties in the eastern part of Nebraska , has 32 public libraries, 14 academic institutions, 89 school districts and 32 special libraries. Though the Eastern System comprises only 4% of the state's geographic area, we serve 40% of the population. From a large metropolitan public library with 10 branches to a community of 238, and a school district with 89 buildings to a one room rural school, our mission is to provide service to all of our membership. Staffed by Kathleen Tooker, Administrator, and Nancy Meyer, Administrative Assistant, the office is located in Omaha . A complete list of our services including a catalogued professional collection can be found on our web page.

John Bernardi, Editor NLAQ For this special NLAQ issue on library building and construction, we invited a variety of persons involved in library construction in Nebraska to write from their unique perspectives. We were especially interested in partnerships that have been forged between different political entities for these building projects. These writers are all to be congratulated for their excellent articles. Lillian Kaslan and Jerome Lobner have jointly written about a combined school/public library project in Loup City, NE. Dr. Ron Heezen, the director of the Omaha Public Library System, has written an essay on cooperation and an article on the planned South Branch/Metropolitan Community Library project.
Nebraska Library Commissioner Wally Seiler shares his views on a joint public library/community college project in Alliance, NE. The beautiful new Metro Sarpy Center and LaVista Public Library is a showpiece of another public/community college arrangement. Oftentimes, we never hear from the architects or the users themselves. Lowell Berg, an architect involved in Lincoln City Library building projects, has written about his work. Henry “Joe” Runge, a recent Creighton University graduate, provides an interesting vision of a future academic library. Norma Koertje and Lisa Geiken proudly describe their new libraries in Bloomfield and Gothenburg.

NEWS RELEASE NEWS RELEASE NEWS RELEASE NEWS RELEASE SEPTEMBER 22, 2004 NEBRASKA CITIZENS TO READ MY ÁNTONIA IN SPRING OF 2005 2005 will be very special in Nebraska. Citizens across the entire state will be invited to read the classic novel My Ántonia by Nebraska’s very own Willa Cather through a new initiative launched by the Willa Cather Foundation, the Nebraska Library Commission, and the Nebraska Center for the Book. The Cather Foundation and the newly formed One Book/One State Nebraska State Steering Committee, chaired by Sue Maher from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, are hoping that librarians across the state will pitch in to help make this a successful undertaking. Partial funding for the initiative has been provided by the Nebraska Humanities Council. The concept is not a new one to Nebraskans. Several libraries, including Lincoln, Hastings, and Omaha, have already initiated "One Book/One City or Town or County" reading projects in their communities. Those communities that have not experienced the One Book/One City or Town or County experience will have a unique opportunity to obtain a variety of resources to provide support for the reading of My Ántonia . The Steering Committee encourages those communities that have held One Book/One City experiences to build upon previous successes by becoming part of this statewide initiative and encouraging their communities to read this American classic. Posters, information about My Ántonia and Willa Cather, discussion questions/ideas, and other information will be available by the end of the year. The goal is to have every community in the state complete its activities by the end of the third week in April in time for a statewide program on My Ántonia to be held in Willa Cather’s Red Cloud.

Nebraska is no stranger to the challenge of providing services to rural America. With nearly one-fifth of its population spread out over the entire central and panhandle regions, Nebraska faces difficulties common to midwestern states in providing resources to remote areas. Nebraska's answer has been unique: a comprehensive communications and information infrastructure built in concert with public and private institutions. Role of the library The secret to success has been partnerships among organizations-such as universities, local freenets, state agencies, and libraries. Each organization brings its own expertise and experience to the network. While libraries may lack the funding resources of universities, the technical expertise of freenets, and the political connections of state agencies, they offer the indispensable ingredient of local public access. As Cindi Hickey, the technology librarian for the Nebraska Library Commission, points out, "Libraries are our local nodes for information. Since they are already tied into the community, local libraries are uniquely positioned to adapt information to the particular needs of their community."
