References Executive Summary: Objectives: Specific objectives are: Through the use of inquiry-based professional development workshops, K-12 educator teams become comfortable with environmental change concepts and data and develop integrated multidisciplinary curriculum. Develop a World Wide Web site that will include data inventories by project and project fact sheets. Develop a steering committee of stakeholders. Employ relevant evaluation tools to continuously improve the program and refine objectives. Approach: This project is an integral part of the ongoing efforts of the Nebraska Earth Science Education Network (NESEN) to use multiple strategies to improve science education (Gosselin et al., 1994, 1995a,b,c, 1996, 1997, 1998). NESEN was created to serve as an interface between K-12 earth science educators and resources and expertise available from university and other scientific organizations. NESEN currently has about 470 members that includes nearly 390 K-12 educators who are primarily from Nebraska, as well as educators from 18 other states, Greece and Belgium. ESU #3's functions include computing services and technical support. In this role, it links 90 buildings in a wide area network that spans four counties, 54,000 students, 4,000 teachers and several hundred admi nistrators. Linda Scott, Technology Coordinator Conestoga Magnet Students are not afraid of technology because they are growing up with it incorporated into all aspects of their young lives. Go to the store and you see children talking on cell phones, scanning groceries at self-checkout lanes, or scanning a price check at Target. Walk through any electronic department and you will see children actually showing their parents how to work a computer, a video game or camcorder. Then why do teachers still resist or have difficulty incorporating some of the best teaching tools for learning into their classrooms. Give the student a camcorder for that project instead of paper and pencil and watch him/her bloom and suddenly become interested in researching history or documenting the life cycle of a butterfly. A child who does not want to write a two or three sentence paragraph on paper because they erase so often, cannot stay on the line, or has difficulty controlling a pencil will suddenly write a seven sentence story on an AlphaSmart. Using grant money I am putting AlphaSmart 3000 carts in every third through sixth grade classroom.
