In-depth report examines the implementation of wireless LAN technologies in K-12 schools Washington, DC. (Nov. 4, 2003) - The Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), a national nonprofit organization that promotes the use of information technologies and the Internet in K-12 education, today introduced Emerging Technologies Report: A Guide to Wireless LANs in K-12 Schools "Wireless local area networks have been around for some time, but only recently have the costs and benefits met at the magical point that propels a new technology into the mainstream," the report notes. "New standards, faster speeds and decreasing costs are combining to make wireless networking an ever-more appealing solution for school campus connectivity needs." The report, from CoSN's Emerging Technologies Committee, examines the implementation of wireless LAN technologies in K-12 schools and identifies challenges, options, and lessons learned. Critical issues addressed in the report include standards and compatibility, planning and implementation, security, and total cost of ownership (TCO).

Peters. Notice of this meeting was posted on the WNDLC website November 20, 2002. Update on new members and connections - Report from Roger Wess - Chadron State College - Dr. Roger Wess of CSC presented a report to the group based on his proposal of establishing a high-end Internet based computer network in western Nebraska that would connect K-12 schools, the ESU's and the higher education institutions in the region. This proposal would help all parties pool technical resources and invest in a central server system that would hold all the technical resources such as software and other digital tools that schools could access. Technology will be able to supply resource tracking, record keeping, communication, assessment, access to information, matching instructional materials with ability and learning style, etc. Dr. Wess was not asking for any action at this time but wanted to share this information. He will be putting together a planning committee in 2003 to determine needs and consider grant options for funding. 4. E-Rate Update -

Few rains, high temperatures keep Nebraska in drought
By MARK KARPF / Daily Nebraskan August 01, 2005
While the past summer has seen some much needed rainfall in Nebraska, there are also record triple-digit highs for days in a row that have threatened to cancel out the rains. The NDMC maintains an information clearinghouse, monitors droughts, drought planning and drought policy, collaborative research, an outreach program for K-12 schools and workshops for federal, state and foreign governments. According to Svoboda, the current drought has been around since the fall of 1999 with the peak of severity hitting in the summer of 2002.

Palm Awards $2.3 Million in Technology Grants to U.S. K-12 Schools and Colleges Educators Will Study How Handhelds Affect Teaching and Learning
"We believe that partnering with educators in doing research on the best practices and impact of handheld computers in education is one of the most important projects we can undertake," said Mike Lorion, vice president of education markets at Palm, Inc. "Research from PEP grants gives educators valuable insight into how handheld technology can be used in teaching and learning. This information helps us to create tools that evolve with the needs of education. We added new research hubs to broaden our research and also extend some studies into the college pre-service and in-service environment." "SRI is committed to researching, understanding and integrating new technologies in the teaching and learning process," said Roy Pea, director of the Center for Technology in Learning at SRI International. "The PEP grants deeply involve the participation of teachers and students in locally innovating the uses of handheld computers for K-12 education. The new PEP grants expand our co-investigation with teachers into the impact that handheld technologies can have on teaching and learning. We expect the PEP program to make a significant contribution to the development of handheld learning for education."

Executive Summary
Objectives
  • Develop learning modules for in-service training programs and our website. Conduct five in-service training programs on IPM for school staff, pest management professionals, and extension personnel. Survey administrators regarding their use of IPM practices in schools after implementation of this educational project
  • Justification
In 2002, we conducted a survey of school administrators in Nebraska, which indicated that only 28% of the school districts currently have an IPM plan. Sixty-one percent indicated that routine pesticide applications are conducted in their schools. Decisions regarding these applications are made by custodial/maintenance personnel in 54% of the schools. Of the school personnel that control pests, only 27% are properly certified. When pesticides are stored in school buildings, 25% are not in a locked area.

Palm Awards $2.3 Million in Technology Grants to U.S. K-12 Schools And Colleges Educators Will Study How Handhelds Affect Teaching and Learning CHICAGO, June 25 /PRNewswire/ In its second round of grants from the Palm Education Pioneer (PEP) program, Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) today announces it is awarding $2.3 million in Palm(TM) handheld units to elementary and secondary schools, colleges and universities to enable innovative teaching and learning, and to gain insight into how handheld computers affect teaching and learning. This research will help determine best practices for integrating handhelds into curriculum and teacher training. Palm named the grant recipients on the opening day of the National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) here at McCormick Place. Palm, a pioneer in the field of mobile and wireless Internet solutions and a leading provider of handheld computers, awarded grants to 87 individual K-12 classrooms and nine "research hubs" for a total of more than 175 classrooms. The first PEP grants were awarded to 15 K-12 schools in January. SRI International's Center for Technology in Learning (CTL) in Menlo Park, Calif., administers the program, and develops and conducts evaluations to study the learning uses, experiences and effectiveness of Palm handhelds for teaching and learning.
