Birding Nebraska I traveled to Nebraska for chickens and cranes, and I got great looks at both and sharp-tailed grouse, as well. I had a wonderful time at Burchard Lake , spending hours in a blind, getting to know individual greater prairie chickens. Scroll down below my favorite "AirChicken" from Burchard Lake to choose your other Nebraska destinations. Nebraska has so much to offer. First, a visit to the Platte River for cranes. Then, a journey south to the Funk Wildlife Production Area (WPA) to check the lingering waterfowl. Heading north to Broken Bow , we'll find the sharp-tailed grouse. Continuing north we'll visit the Valentine NWR . The town of Valentine is still about 25 miles further north, and there we'll visit the nearby Smith Falls State Park and the Niobrara NWR . A quick run north again will take us to South Dakota, where we'll visit Lacreek NWR We'll head back south through the sandhills, outrunning a few hurricanes and blizzards on our way back to the southeastern part of the state. The food is a highlight in Beatrice, where we'll stay before visiting
