V ERDIGRE, N EBRASKA located in Knox County in northeast Nebraska, was established by Bohemian settlers in the beautiful Verdigris Valley, and was platted on July 12, 1887 by George Quimby. Some of the first establishments included two saloons, a post office, & a hotel or restaurant. Among the first settlers was "Old Jules" Sandoz, father of Mari Sandoz, famous author of the book, "Old Jules". The first school was reported to have operated during the year of 1888-89, and in 1889 a schoolhouse was put up. In 1892 a catastrophic fire started by an attempt to blast open a safe burned the south half of Main Street on the west side. Many businesses were destroyed. Fires continued to plague Verdigre in its early years. Blizzards, tornadoes, drought, fires, floods, and other acts of nature seemed to continually ravage in the area. In 1914 Verdigre withstood a terrible flood, and again in 1935.

    By Rick Wallace
This program focuses on the lives of early African-Americans who settled in Hastings, the issues they faced in their daily lives and how the white community perceived them. The program also focuses on the circumstances faced by the African-American community and the community of Hastings in 1943, when the Navy announced plans to build a munitions plant outside of the town. The impact of this history can still be felt today in Hastings and is only an introduction to a wonderfully rich story. African-American Homesteaders and Cowboys of Nebraska
    By Vicki Troxel Harris
In the 1854 census of Nebraska, there were 14 blacks listed as slaves. After the Civil War, African-Americans came to Nebraska as cowhands, laborers, cavalrymen and homesteaders. Harris recounts many of the oral histories she has collected about cowboys, such as Jim Kelly and Amos Harris from the Lexington area and Roy Hayes of Cherry County "who could catch anything with legs." African-American Pioneers and Entrepreneurs of Nebraska
    By Vicki Troxel Harris
African-American doctors, barbers, music teachers and innovative and prosperous orchard owners are some of the people who come to life in this presentation. Harris collected many oral histories while researching African-American settlements in Nebraska. Through her scholarship, Nebraska history has a fascinating new chapter.

Only after his death in 1952 was the full extent of his obsession uncovered. Changing Attitudes in Nebraska's Public Policy for those in Need

    Fort Atkinson, Nebraska
    The History of Fort Atkinson
A little more than 150 years ago, when the American revolution was a mere 36 years behind us, when not a single settler had crossed the Mississippi into Iowa, and when not a single mile of railroad existed in the entire nation, a simple patch of ground a few miles north of Omaha, now surrounded by cornfields, pastures, and small town homes, was the site of the largest military post in America. Upon this quiet little patch of Nebraska once strode several thousands of soldiers, many of them veterans of the War of 1812. Here bugles blew, orders were barked, cannons roared. Here all the intricately controlled chaos of a great military establishment was conducted. Here also were Nebraska's first school, farm, sawmill, hospital and library. Here was Ft. Atkinson, the "Elysian Fields" of the 6th infantry, the first fort west of the Missouri, and the sole accomplishment of the Yellowstone Expedition of 1819. The story of Fort Atkinson began in 1804 with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The land that is now Nebraska was once a part of the territory of Spain and later of France, and was peacefully acquired by the United States in 1803 when the French Emperor Napoleon offered the vast Louisiana Territory to the U.S. for $15,000,000. For three cents an acre, the fledgling American Republic doubled its size and acquired what would eventually form all or part of 15 states. President Thomas Jefferson proposed an expedition to be undertaken by the U.S. Army. In a confidential message to Congress he stated:

Part 1 Antelope County is situated in the northeastern part of the State, in the fifth tier of counties from the eastern border of the State and in the second from the northern. It is bounded on the north by Knox County, on the east by Pierce and Madison, on the south by Boone and on the west by Wheeler and Holt Counties. It is twenty-four miles from east to west and thirty-six from north to south, containing twenty-four townships, 864 square miles, or 552,960 acres of land. The 42d parallel of latitude very nearly coincides with the northern line of its southern tier of townships TOPOGRAPHY. The county is composed of valley and upland, the Elkhorn Valley traversing it in a northwesterly and southwesterly direction and comprising the larger portion of the county. South of this valley is a range of hills, embracing most of the land in the southern tier of townships, and to the north of it is another range of hills, constituting the divide between this valley and those of the Verdigris and Bazile Creeks. These two ranges of hills vary in height from slight elevations to about 150 feet above the bottom lands of the Elkhorn Valley.

    Hunters, Explorers, and Fur Traders
Nebraska's soil has been farmed since prehistoric times, but the Native Americans of the plains : notably the Pawnee : devoted themselves more to hunting the buffalo than to farming, since buffalo, as well as the pronghorn antelope and smaller animals, were then abundant in the area. The Spanish explorer Francisco VAsquez de Coronado and his men were the first Europeans to visit the region. They probably passed through Nebraska in 1541. The French also came and in the 18th cent. engaged in fur trading, but development began only after the area passed from France to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The Lewis and Clark expedition (1804) and the explorations of Zebulon M. Pike (1806) increased knowledge of the country, but the activities of the fur traders were more immediately valuable in terms of settlement. Manuel Lisa, a fur trader, probably established the first trading post in the Nebraska area in 1813. Bellevue, the first permanent settlement in Nebraska, first developed as a trading post.

Centennial Edition Contains Much of County's History
One hundred years ago, President Andrew Johnson proclaimed Nebraska statehood. This same year Saunders County (Calhoun) became a county. This week the Wahoo Newspaper presents its special Centennial Edition in observance of this one hundredth year. Neither this, nor any newspaper special edition, could purport to serve as a history of Saunders County. Historians have accomplished far more in comparison through books and writings than what could be attempted by this newspaper. Never the less it is the purpose of this edition to give some insight, as little as it may be, into the free, adventuresome pioneering life of this county and to include other articles of historical significance bringing it up to date. Thus, this newspaper volume will attempt to give the reader a taste of history. This was not possible, to say the least, without the aid of many people scattered throughout Saunders County. Far too many, indeed, to give credit to all, but without their aid this edition would not have been possible. Nearly all stories submitted were accepted.

Luebke This work contains fifty-eight short topical chapters on Nebraska history that, when united with the images in this rich gallery of illustrations, present a unique history of the state. Frederick C. Luebke’s lifelong commitment to the study of his state informs the book in every detail, as does his concern for clear and readable narrative. The result is a work that every Nebraskan will want to have, read, and enjoy. Familiar illustrations are accompanied by richly detailed explanations of their significance; many others, never published before, cast new light on aspects of our state history. These include the culture of Nebraska’s Native Americans, the building of the transcontinental railroad, the hardship endured by European immigrants, and the contribution of African Americans to the state.
