Nemaha
The village of Nemaha was originally named Nemaha City, because the founding fathers believed it would one day be a great city. Because of its location, near the Nemaha River, the name seemed fitting. The river was named by the Otoe Indians, and means "miry water." Because of the beauty of the location the founders had visions of trains winding up and down the valley, steamboats loading and unloading at the Missouri River wharf, businesses, factories, lovely homes, schools and churches. The village site is located on second bottomland and faces two riverfronts, the Little Nemaha River on the south and the Missouri River on the east. Much of the bottomland, and bluffs along the river are covered with forest timber of various kinds, also shrubs and underbrush including wild fruit and nuts. According to available records the town site of Nemaha City was selected in 1854. City lots were surveyed, staked off and offered for sale. it was surveyed parallel to the bluffs and river, bias ways, rather than by true directions, and has been confusing people ever since as to the proper direction. Allen L. Coatt was the surveyor. It is said that he was the first person to erect his cabin on the town site. Nemaha City was incorporated and approved by an act of the territorial legislature in the 1855-1856 term.

London
The first settler was John Hauman in July of 1856. He was soon followed by William Wilson, William Bachanan, Eli Lauker and Wyatt Nosier. Mary Nosier was the first child born there in March of 1857. James Cook and Louisa Snyder were married in the new town on April 25, 1858. An infant child of William Buchanan was the first death in 1857. An unknown man, claim jumped, was shot and received the honor of the first funeral (1857). London was incorporated in District Court at the April term of 1858. The first town officers were Robert Heap, James Cook, Nathaniel Minick, Eli Lauker, and John Hauman. The post office was established September 2, 1867, in Edmond Money's store. He was the first postmaster. He was followed by Charles H. Bacon (there may have been a possible substituting by his son Amos), John Harding and Mrs. John (Jeannette) Harding. Service was discontinued September 16, 1895. One of the first buildings built (1857) was by Wyatt Nosier and was used as a tavern. A store of T. C. Lee was bought by George and Jane Emerson in 1876 and used as a residence. The Nosler tavern was used as the first school, taught by Miss Louisa Snyder. The first school house was erected in August of 1857 and was accidentally destroyed by fire in 1861. Dr. S.W. McGrew, London's physician and Nemaha County school superintendent reported the following in 1870: "London school, higher department . . . held in the Christian church... 23 pupils.. .two good teachers.. .wages 50 dollars per month... 3 month school." A new school was then built.

Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Nebraska History
Harry Fuller and Louis Linxwiller organized the first Consumer Credit Counseling Services. These two men saw a need for low cost education for the consumer as consumer credit began to develop and gain interest during the post war years. After three years of hard work, the National Foundation of Consumer Credit (NFCC) was organized. An United Way Union representative and community volunteers, began a community effort to build interest and raise startup funds for a free standing Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS) office in Omaha, Nebraska. A Board of Directors was formed and letters of support were sent to the NFCC with an application for membership. The first CCCS Office in Omaha was opened, and known as: CCCS of Metropolitan Omaha. In the first year, the office counseled less than a hundred families and returned little over $20,000 to the business community. The Board of Directors decided that reorganization was necessary. A commitment was made to serve other areas of the state, and the name of the organization was changed to Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Nebraska, Inc. (CCCSN) By September, work began to establish a branch in Lincoln, Nebraska.
For the first time in CCCSN's history, more than $1 million dollars was returned to creditors in a single year.

http://www.chadron.com/history/areahistory.php
Northwest Nebraska History This area was a favorite Native American hunting and camping area for hundreds of years and the Sioux Indians occupied it permanently about 1810. Spaniards from New Mexico were the first fur traders, followed in the 1830's by Americans from St. Louis who established a regular trail from Fort Laramie to Fort Pierre on the Missouri River. In the 1840's there were two competing fur posts, one on the Chadron Creek about 8 miles south of Chadron, the other on Bordeaux Creek 3 1/2 miles east of Chadron. In 1872-73, two Indian agencies were established on the White River in what is now Dawes County. Fort Robinson was built to protect the Red Cloud Agency and played an important role in the Indian Wars of the 1870's. Sioux War Chief Crazy Horse was killed at Fort Robinson in 1877. Camp Sheridan was established in what is now Sheridan County in 1874 to protect the Spotted Tail Agency. It was abandoned and dismantled in 1881, but the site is easy accessible. With the removal of the Sioux Indians to South Dakota in 1877, several very large cattle outfits came into the area. Large roundups were conducted annually until the railroads arrived in 1885, and an influx of homesteaders took up most of the available land. Dawes County is still cattle country and very much reflects its heritage of Native Americans, fur traders, cowboys, and frontier soldiers. The buffalo herd and the Texas Longhorn cattle found at Fort Robinson State Park are reminders of northwest Nebraska's vivid history.

Many people that go to school in Taylor have parents or grandparents that also went to school here. Our school is very historic. Joseph Rusho was the first person to settle here Taylor with his family. The family included his wife Josephine, and son Treffly Olive. They came to visit Joseph's brother Frank in Fort Hartsuff in Valley County and there they had their second son Robert. In the spring of 1877, they decided to move up stream and settled here in the present day site of Taylor. They had several more children including, George, Eugene, Joseph, Emory, Myrtle, and Maude. Joseph was known as the "Father of Taylor." He was the leader of Loup County politics and civics for thirty years. Joseph also owned a lumberyard. Taylor was named after Edward H. Taylor and his wife Elizabeth O'Bryan. They came and settled in Kent just east of Taylor in 1876. They where friends of the Rushos.

NEBRASKA HISTORY Ancient Land Early Banks Early Government Explorers ... Naming of Nebraska ANCIENT LAND: North American Continent The area of the United States that became known as " Nebraska " had its earliest beginnings under water, in the bottom of a great inland sea. Skeletons of millions of animals and plants were embedded in mud that hardened into rock and became the limestone that appears today on the sides of ravines and along the streams in Eastern Nebraska . As the sea bottom slowly rose, a land of marshes and forests appeared. After many thousand years, the land became drier, and trees of all kinds grew, including oak, maple, beech, and willow. Leaves from these ancient trees can be found today pressed and printed in the red sandstone rocks. Illustration - Mastedon Then the sea covered the land again, bringing new shells and fish. When the land rose this time, it was covered with grass and trees. The bones of animals such as camels, tapirs, monkeys, tigers, rhinos, elephants, and tiny horses are still found today beneath our soil.

    Historical Note:
    Freeman gets free land . . .
In 1862 former Union soldier Daniel Freeman took up Uncle Sam's offer for free land out in the Nebraska territory. According to the Homestead Act, all he had to do was farm the land for five years before it would become his rightful property. Many other pioneers soon followed, as did the railroad. Five years later, as a result of settlers like Freeman and rail expansion, Nebraska became the 37th state to join the Union. Daniel Freeman's land is now part of the Homestead National Monument of America.
