Pawnee The French also came and in the 18th cent. engaged in fur trading, but development began only after the area passed from France to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The Lewis and Clark expedition (1804) and the explorations of Zebulon M. Pike (1806) increased knowledge of the country, but the activities of the fur traders were more immediately valuable in terms of settlement. Manuel Lisa, a fur trader, probably established the first trading post in the Nebraska area in 1813. Bellevue, the first permanent settlement in Nebraska, first developed as a trading post.
    Steamboats and Wagon Trains
Steamboating on the Missouri River, initiated in 1819, brought business to the river ports of Omaha and Brownville. The natural highway formed by the Platte valley was used extensively by pioneers going west over the Oregon Trail and also the California Trail and the Mormon Trail. Nebraska settlers made money supplying the wagon trains with fresh mounts and pack animals as well as food. Nebraska became a territory after passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act

History
Location:
Saunders County is in eastern Nebraska. The Platte River forms the northern and eastern boundary of Saunders County and played a role in the development of the area. South of the river, the Burlington Railroad controlled, while the area to the north belonged to the Union Pacific Railroad. At one time, the river flowed across the county from the northwest corner diagonally to the southeast corner at Ashland. Today this old river bed is called the Todd Valley. The land is fertile and settlers drew lumber from the trees which lined the river, as well as fish and wildlife.
A Brief History
Native Americans inhabited the area as many as 6000 years ago. Contact with European fur traders in the 1700's brought contagious diseases such as small pox to these people and their population reduced. The Otoe and Pawnee lived in the area until they were forced to relocate by the government in the 1850's.

CHICAGO AND LINCOLN THE UNIVERSITY PUBLISHING CO. THE UNIVERSITY PUBLISHING COMPANY The Lakeside Press CHICAGO Produced by Connie Snyder CONTENTS George Catlin Painting an Indian Chief PREFACE STORIES are the harp strings of history, transforming the past into melody and rhythm. The best stories live forever in the human mind. They greet us in the Latin, Teutonic, and Celtic tongues, surprise us in the ancient Greek, Arabic, and Hindoo literature, and astonish us in the rude folk tales of primitive peoples who have no written language. The demand for a good story is as wide, as unsatisfied, as human longing, and the search for a new one as difficult and elusive as the discovery of a new element in nature. Stories are the inspiration of patriotism and of home virtues. No land is loved without its place tales, and no nation became great without the lift of noble examples and ideals in the stories of its common people. Every hill and mountain must find its hero, every vale and prairie its legend, ere it becomes invested with living human interest.

Page 1 of HOME Long before early French explorers named it the Platte River, for "flat water," this heartland oasis was a crossroads. Migratory birds, abundant wildlife and native Americans were in residence for centuries when the confluence of the Oregon and Mormon Trails led pioneers to the site that would become Kearney. Bound for points further west, some hardy, yet visionary souls saw opportunities along the Platte and they stayed laying the foundation for what would become the Mid-western "work ethic." Now, at the very center of the country, as this great, braided river cuts an arc across the plains, Kearney, Nebraska faces a brilliant future. http://www.kearney.net/history2.html
Page 2 of 2 [ HOME In 1848, a fort was established to provide protection for travelers heading west along the Oregon Trail. Named for Colonel Stephen Watts Kearny, Fort Kearny afforded a safe haven for pioneers, pony express riders, prospectors and others as they followed the great Platte river road. According to an official War Department report, more than 30,000 people bound for California, Oregon and Utah passed through Fort Kearny during an 18 month period during the gold Rush of 1849. Originally built near Nebraska City, the fort was later relocated to its present site, south of Kearney, to increase military strength in the busy central Nebraska corridor. In its 23 years as the first U.S. Army Post on the Oregon Trail, Fort Kearny was never attacked by Indians. The city of Kearney derives its name from the original fort but due to a postal error an "e" was inadvetently added and then never changed Settlement began in the summer of 1871 when the Rev. and Mrs. Collins entered a homestead claim. The couple lived in a dwelling called Junction House which was also the site of the first post office, the first school district, the first marriage ceremony, and the first church service.

    Arnold History
Compiled by Norene Hall Mills, Author of "One Hundred Years on the South Loup"
There was town building fever in the country in the early 1800's - Broken Bow in 1882, Callaway and Gandy in '85. Merna and Anselmo in '86 and Arnold in '83. Unlike her sister villages, all platted by townsite companies, Arnold was established by one man, Richard Allen. It was 1800 when the Allen family left their Iowa home by covered wagon to seek land in central Nebraska. They struck the South Loup River and followed it wherever it might lead. The location they chose to settle was directly between the headquarters of the two big cattle companies, Henry Brothers and Arnold and Ritchie. John and Bob Henry had come in 1875 and claimed as range for their thousand head of cattle, the big table north and northeast of the future townsite and as far west as the head of the Loup. George Arnold and Sam Ritchie had come in 1876 with a like number of cattle and claimed as their range the tables and valleys east and south of future Arnold. They filed on 320 acres for ranch headquarters. The necessary surveying was done for Allen's 160-acre homestead, part of which would in time become the town of Arnold. A sod house was quickly put up. This move was viewed with alarm by the cattlemensettlers were not welcome here. The extremely violent winter of 1880-81 changed all this. Cattle died by the hundreds. These losses broke the ranchers and forced them to leave the country.

During its relatively short history, the cable industry has undergone many changes and improvements. And, we’re proud to say that Time Warner Cable has been the prime mover of many of the industry’s significant advancements. Beginning with HBO – nation’s first satellite delivered cable channel – to the creation of CNN, TBS, MTV and Nickelodeon, Time Warner has been a pioneer in the development and creation of quality alternative programming for our customers. In the technical arena, too, Time Warner Cable has lead the way for many of the cable services like Pay-Per-View and High Speed Internet access that we currently use everyday. In fact, we are the only cable company to ever receive an Emmy Award for technology for our research and development of Video On Demand (VOD). VOD is a state of the art cable service that gives customers the power to receive the latest video titles instantly simply by pushing a button on their remote control. Even better, Time Warner’s digital system of home entertainment and information includes iControl, a feature that provides customers with VCR functionality (e.g., pause, rewind, fast forward and stop) over the movies they order.

    Historic Facts and Overview
Indian Tribes Through the centuries, people entered and abandoned the Nebraska area as the climate fluctuated between long periods of drought and times of plentiful moisture. This constant movement created a diverse mixture of Indian languages and cultures. The Pawnees and their northern relatives, the Arikaras, lived in the area the longest. They came from the south about four or five centuries ago and established villages along the Platte, Loup, Republican and other central Nebraska waterways. The Pawnees hunted buffalo on the plains and farmed beans, corn and squash. In the 18th century, the Omaha, Ponca and Oto tribes entered eastern Nebraska and lived near the Missouri River. Other tribes, such as the Teton Sioux (Lakotas), Arapahos and Cheyennes, migrated westward from forested areas north and east of the Missouri River. Altogether, the various tribes living in the Nebraska area may have numbered about 40,000 in 1800. The Indians understood the world to have a unity or coherence that was incomprehensible to European Americans. Unlike the whites, the Indians made no distinction between practical and religious activities. For example, among the Pawnees, sacred ceremonies were as essential as hoeing was to make corn grow.

His party included forty-five white soldiers, sixty Pueblo Indians, a priest and an interpreter. He made several attempts to trade with the Pawnees but was openly rebuffed. Pedro de Villasur paused to regroup and plan his next move. As Pedro de Villasur and his group camped near present day Columbus, Nebraska, they were attacked by the Pawnees. Most of the Pueblos had sensed danger and left before the battle began. Pedro de Villasur was killed before he could reach his weapons and only thirteen Spaniards made it back to Santa Fe.
