Class.com (Lincoln, NB) has entered the market for online high school classes with state contracts in Kentucky and Kansas. Discussions are underway with four more states, says John Blair, president. But this is not a story of instant success. Classroom.com has the exclusive license to distribute online courses from the U. of Nebraska's Independent Study High School (ISHS), a distance learning organization formed in 1929 and accredited since 1978. Classroom.com was established in April of 1998 to market the online courses and began operations last July. The U of Nebraska is a major shareholder, and the board of directors includes J. Robert Kerrey, a US Senator from Nebraska and former Governor of the state, and Donald Helmuth, president of the Nebraska Technology Development Corporation and associate vice chancellor for research, U of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Summer Reading Program Theme: ÒDiscovery New Trails @your library ACTION REQUESTED Reminder: Join your colleagues May 12, East High School LMC, 4-5 pm for our last meeting of the year. Honored guests will be Jane Neal, Goodrich and from LPSDO, Shirley Foltz, Marilyn Stewart and Darlene Lehms. Jane will be retiring after many years of service to LPS children and staff. Marilyn and Shirley officially retired earlier this year. We will also be honoring Darlene, who after many years of post-retirement service, has spent several hours weekly to obtain and return Nebraska Library Commission Library for the Blind materials for LPS students. Please make your reservations now for the May 17 Time Warner Spotlight on Education Night at the Lied Center Main Stage, 6-8 p.m. Ann Shrewsbury wants you to know that everyone on your media center staff is invited. Time Warner is in the process of updating their mailing list and they tried very hard to include all media staff. If someone on your media staff did not receive an invitation, please let them know they are invited. RSVP to Amy at Time Warner, 421-0330 or amy.lapointe@twcable.com by May 12. Important! Included in all LMS packets is a copy of a memo that was sent to persons who may be interested in working as a paraeducator this summer in some schools. If you know of other persons who may also be interested, please have them contact Gladys. The memo lists schools that will be receiving paraeducator assistance this summer. Using last yearÕs circulation figures, it has been determined that the following 13 school library media centers will receive not more than 32 total hours each of paraeducator assistance (4 hours per week X 8 weeks, depending on the individual school schedule): Beattie, Calvert, Campbell, Cavett, Elliott, Hawthorne, Hill, Holmes, Humann, Maxey, Pershing, Pyrtle, Roper. Other schools may also need paraeducator help but they are not identified at this time.

NelsonAtkins Director Marc Wilson and his staff, Joslyn Director Dr. John E . As the only general art museum in nebraska, and the largest art museum
http://loanet-dev.mit.edu/exhibitions/jos/intro.html
Thanks to a planning grant from the Museum Loan Network (MLN), Joslyn Art Museum staff members were able to travel to The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, to research the possibility of loan of art works for inclusion in a reinstallation of Joslyn's collection of Asian art. The Joslyn Art Museum has a small collection of approximately 400 Asian objects which has not been on display for many years. Although the Asian collection has areas of limited strength and individual pieces of merit, we wanted to explore the possibility of long-term loans to augment these holdings for a thematic reinstallation addressing the major achievements of Asian art and culture.
These loans are extraordinary and in all media - ceramic, jade, bone, porcelain, bronze, wood - and span eras from 2000 B.C.E. to the 19th century. They complement and strengthen our own collection and will give a better overview of Asian civilization than we could have done using just the Joslyn collection. Among the loans is an exceptional ceramic plate decorated by Kenzan (1663-1743), one of the most famous Japanese painters of his time. The fact that the Nelson-Atkins is committing a significant number of artworks to Joslyn for a long period has not gone unnoticed. Several collectors in the Midwest, New York, and Asia have contacted Joslyn about the possible loan of objects from their collections.
As the only general art museum in Nebraska, and the largest art museum between Chicago and Denver, and between Kansas City and Minneapolis, the Joslyn is committed to exhibiting a wide range of quality art from all periods. Joslyn is often the first, and sometimes the only art museum, seen by many citizens of the region. We feel that our visitors should be introduced to a wider representation of Asian art. This is of special importance given increased economic and cultural ties with Asia and the region's growing Asian population. Objects from the Nelson-Atkins' collection that might otherwise not be shown for years, or at all, will find an interested and enthusiastic audience in Omaha.

Coins for the Corps Dear School Administrator: The General Assembly is back at work in Jefferson City, and the pace of activity in our offices has picked up substantially in recent days. Members of our staff are attending legislative hearings, meeting with legislators on various topics, and preparing for our Department’s first budget hearings. While the process is familiar, there is much that is new this year because of the election of a new governor and new leadership in both the House and the Senate. My early contacts with Governor Blunt and his staff have been cordial and constructive. Following are several important items for your information and use. MOVING FORWARD WITH A STUDENT I.D. SYSTEM Last year a group of Missouri educators and DESE personnel explored ways of reducing the recordkeeping load for school districts, especially in response to the increasing data demands imposed by NCLB. Among the ideas considered was the adoption of a statewide student identification system. You may recall that we conducted a survey of school districts to determine what systems were already in place and how districts were using such programs to manage student data. The Department recently signed a contract to begin development of a statewide student identification/locator system. The state education agencies in Kansas and Nebraska also are beginning projects with the same company, which recently implemented a system in Iowa.

CHAPTER 2: TECHNOLOGY LEADERSHIP SKILLS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY Alabama: Making the Case for Educational Technology
Because of a shortage in revenue in FY03, the Alabama legislature cut many educational programs, one of which was technology. In fact, state funding for technology to the local school districts was cut from $181 per teacher to zero. At the annual Alabama Education Technology Association Symposium, district technology leaders and superintendents met in roundtable discussions concerning the funding crisis. Their discussions led to the exploration of the question, "Do our leaders really understand what would happen in our schools if the technology was suddenly turned off?" The concept of a "Technology Blackout Day" was conceived. After further discussions it was decided that turning off all of the technology for a day would be unsafe to the school children. Therefore, a more positive approach was taken to educate key decision makers on the value of technology in our educational system. A
