Welcome to the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. Our mission is to "enrich lives through the beauty and wonder of plants."
An arboretum is a living museum where a collection of trees and other plants is assembled and maintained for education, research and enjoyment. Rather than bound to a single place, the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum is a remarkable network of arboretum sites , parks, historic properties and other public landscapes located in dozens of communities across the state.
Linked together and supported by the Arboretum office ( map with office and greenhouse ) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, this unique statewide network makes the Arboretum accessible and relevant to citizens across Nebraska. A Gateway to Great Gardens Think of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum as a gateway to great gardens. Through our network of affiliate sites, along with a host of programs and membership benefits, we aim to make you successful in your gardening and landscaping efforts in Nebraska.

Renewal We have developed a Curriculum Reflection Process which will help each IHE site examine its curriculum in light of the themes. Every site is engaged in study groups and seminars to explore and incorporate them into their TEP. As a result, the themes are firmly embedded. University of Connecticut The four themes provide the framework and substance for three of our yearlong master's seminars for interns in urban settings and those focusing on students with disabilities and diverse learning needs. State and Fed. Grants have been awarded to us and our PDS that focus on students with disabilities and those at risk. University of Hawaii at Manoa Our efforts remain focused on the development of partner schools where we can engage with teachers in both informal conversations and more formal experiences directed at understanding and implementing the Curriculum Themes and their moral dimensions. The depth and nature of involvement is not institutionalized but relies on individuals who choose to engage in the work.

Scrambling for Staff: The Teacher Shortage in Rural Schools
At a time when school districts nationwide are experiencing teacher shortages, districts that historically have difficulty attracting and retaining quality teachers are really scrambling for staff. This week Education World explores the effects of the teacher shortage on remote and rural schools. Included: What are schools doing to solve the shortage? When Reid Riedlinger advertises for staff, he offers them subsidized housing, laptop computers, eight computers and a copy machine for each classroom, and a full-time teaching assistant! Riedlinger, superintendent of schools in the two-building Wellpinit School District, which serves 402 K-12 children on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Washington, also offers classes that average just 17 students. Plus, he told Education World, he throws in free breakfast and lunch if teachers eat it with students, and he promises no staff meetings longer than 30 minutes.

The Teacher Shortage: Apply, Please!
In some areas, competition over certified teachers has become so fierce that districts are promising signing bonuses, paid health insurance, subsidized housing, and more. Just what does it take to woo or lose a teacher? This week, Education World explores what some school districts are doing to attract and retain teachers. Mix together swelling numbers of immigrant and baby boomer children, class size reduction initiatives, and a graying teacher force. Stir in lack of teacher mobility, inadequate induction programs, poor working conditions, the lowest unemployment in three decades, and a growing salary gap between teachers and other college graduates a difference of more than $32,000 for experienced teachers with master's degrees and you have created the worst shortage of qualified teachers ever. The problem especially acute in urban and rural districts and in the hard-to-fill areas of special education, mathematics, and science is so severe that

Return to Mentoring Information Categories List The author of this web site has been keeping track of state-level mentoring programs for years. During that time I have seen that it's: 1. Difficult to draw conclusions about the sum of state-level novice teacher programming, because it is in constant flux 2. Possible to look at state level activity from several different perspectives, because of the various and complex themes that weave through beginning teacher support systems. This report takes one view point in presenting and analyzing the patterns in state-wide mentoring and induction programming. That approach views mentoring on a continuum in which assistance of novice teachers is at one end of the continuum and assessment of novice teachers is on the other end. Necessarily, that perspective "colors" how this information is presented and analyzed. What is presented here is:
  • A chart summarizing some of the studies and illustrating the changing picture described above, plus references to all the studies I found.

Year after year, graduating seniors in Interdisciplinary Studies say the high level of accessibility of their professors is what they value most about their UW-Green Bay experience. Our students enjoy the same quality of teaching and one-on-one access as their on-campus counterparts because the same UW-Green Bay faculty who teach on campus also teach the Extended degree courses. Currently, about 35 UW-Green Bay professors from an array of disciplines teach in the Extended Degree Program. Breznay, Peter T.
