    J. Lee Rankin: Nation's leading lawyer played key role in school desegregation and other significant historic cases
In the mid-20th century, J. Lee Rankin, the Hartington, Nebraska native who grew up and resided in Lincoln, became our nation's leading lawyer.
A quiet man of wisdom, talent and integrity, he was considered a writer-attorney "who gets things done," and respected for his lack of partisanship.
He played key roles in desegregation of schools, determination of federal cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, resolution of significant historic cases, and representation of New York City as its city attorney.
During the early years of a law career that spanned nearly half a century, Rankin practiced law in Lincoln from 1930 to 1952. And he reported in a December 1, 1985 feature in the Omaha

Scope of this FAQ
A few of the newgroups listed have short descriptions that evidently were added by persons other than the proponents. Suggestions for additions to this FAQ are most welcome. Many thanks to those who saw earlier versions of this FAQ and added to or corrected the information posted earlier. And special thanks to the persons who wrote suggesting that I post a copy of this FAQ on the World Wide WebI have now done so here, http://learninfreedom.org/ed-newsgroups.html at my Web site, which has links to other information about on-line resources for self-education. Some of the newsgroups listed here are very inactive (possibly because they are not carried at many sites). Some are very active, with verifiable frequent postings from multiple countries. But in general the proportion of all Internet users who discuss issues on Usenet has been declining since 1997 as Web-based discussion boards and E-mail mailing lists have become more popular. For a more up-to-date picture of where people discuss education issues on-line, see this site's Discussion Groups about Education Reform and Home-Schooling page.

  • Executive Summary Introduction
  • The educational telecommunications infrastructure in the State of Nebraska ranks among the best in the nation. Nebraska has been a leader in the deployment of educational television, radio, and distance learning to provide educational services to the citizens of the state. This study examines NET’s transmission infrastructure and provides recommendations for a technology plan that will expand and evolve the network in the most cost effective way that meets the needs of network users while taking advantage of continued advances in digital communications technology. An extensive needs assessment was performed to determine near term and long term application needs with respect to transmission capacity as well as service and support requirements. NET has transitioned the network over the past several years from a single channel of educational programming to a multi-channel, interactive network that provides educational television and distance learning services to a wide variety of users. State of the art technology, such as digital video compression, has been used to creatively develop a network that makes the most efficient use of the limited available bandwidth. Terrestrial-based services have been deployed to augment the historically satellite-based transmission infrastructure.
