State Improvement Grant Applications Funded in 2000 Nebraska Abstract Basic Information Improvement Strategies Return to Main Page Nebraska Abstract or Conceptual Framework for State Systemic Change Following the most recent monitoring visit by the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services and a series of stakeholder meetings, Nebraska stakeholders identified four areas requiring preservice and inservice attention in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disabilities. They include: 1. Behavior management/discipline 2. Instructional improvement 3. Transition services 4. Parent involvement. Although status, needs, and objectives are addressed in all four areas in this proposal, funds are being requested only for assistance with improving the infrastructure in local education agencies (LEAs) related to research-based behavior improvement and instructional strategies, and to assure parent involvement in the Improvement Academy. The project also addresses systemic changes in state policies to leverage funds to support staff development programs to improve behavior and instructional strategies, improvement of transition services, service integration, and personnel supply, however these objectives are supported by other funds. The Nebraska State Improvement Grant (N-SIG) has two goals.

Proficiency-Oriented Foreign Language in the Small High School. ERIC Digest.
Very little has been written about the problems of foreign language instruction in small high schools, and even less about possible solutions. Practitioners and policymakers need help with this issue. This Digest considers national concerns, state initiatives, enrollment patterns, the dilemma of multi-level instruction, technological alternatives, and resources of state education agencies.
NATIONAL CONCERNS
Into the 1990s foreign language instruction will present a strong challenge to administrators and teachers in small high schools. Most of the reform reports of the 1980s pointed out that a critical task ahead would be to improve instruction in foreign languages. The challenge is particularly strong because the focus of such reports lies in language PROFICIENCY, not just in knowledge about languages and cultures in general (see, for example, Strasheim, 1987). Foreign languages are not viewed as a "frill." For example, according to the authors of A NATION AT RISK, foreign language proficiency is vital to the national interest in business, foreign affairs, the military, and education.

McREL currently holds one of ten regional educational laboratory contracts that together make up the Regional Educational Laboratory System , which serves education agencies and schools across the nation. This system represents the U.S. Department of Education's largest research and development investment, designed to help educators, policymakers, and communities improve schools. As is true of all of the regional educational laboratories, McREL is guided by a governing board The focus of the current five-year contract is to help transform low-performing schools into high-performing learning communities and to capture the procedural knowledge necessary to make it happen. To meet this goal, McREL
  • works to address critical problems in the Central Region; serves as a national leader in standards-based educational practice; and collaborates with the other regional educational laboratories.

McREL's educational laboratory work in the Central Region is shaped by the common concerns, issues, and special attributes of the seven states that make up the region. To address these problems, McREL has integrated technical assistance, research, and practical guidance into a scope of work that focuses on four areas:

On-site Wastewater Treatment: Education to Action at Lake McConaughy Background

The Lake McConaughy Education to Action project was established to address problems and issues related to on-site wastewater treatment systems , such as septic systems, at Lake McConaughy, Nebraska. The multi-year project began in January 2002 and concludes in December 2005. The primary objectives of the project are:
  • to provide information and learning opportunities for area residents and business owners about septic systems that can be a nonpoint source of pollution to surface and groundwater; and to support and encourage citizens to take voluntary steps to address septic systems and other locally important environmental and natural resources issues.

US State Government Aid The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for most state loan, grant and scholarship programs, in addition to the federal loans and grants. When you submit the FAFSA to the US Department of Education, they forward the information on the form to the state student assistance agency. Each state has a different FAFSA submission deadline. If you submit your FAFSA by March 1, you will be in time for all state deadlines, other than Michigan. If you miss the deadline, you will be ineligible to receive state aid for the entire academic year.
