Geography
Location and Extent of the Area
Marshall County is in the first tier of counties south of the north border of Kansas and is the fourth county west of the east border. Marshall County is bounded on the west by Washington County, on the south by Riley and Pottawatomie Counties, on the east by Nemaha County and on the north by Nebraska. The county contains 25 townships totaling 911 square miles.
Topography and Drainage
Marshall County lies within the region designated by Fenneman (1931) as the Dissected Till Plains section of the Central Lowlands province. Most of Marshall County east of Big Blue River and north of Black Vermillion River is topographically till plains. Here the divide areas between major drainage lines are gently undulating, and the local relief seldom exceeds 100 feet. Near the larger streams the relief is more pronounced, and the wide valleys are flanked by a subdued bluff line. The parts of Marshall County lying west of Big Blue River and south of Black Vermillion River have chiefly a rock-controlled type of topography similar to that of the Flint Hills region farther south. In parts more remote from major streams, the rock-controlled topography is mantled by glacial drift and loess. The major alluvial valleys are those of the Big Blue River, the Little Blue River, Black Vermillion River, and Vermillion Creek.

Geography Geographic Center of the U.S.
Source: U.S. Geological Survey, Dept. of the Interior There is no generally accepted definition of geographic center and no uniform method for determining it. Following the U.S. Geological Survey, the geographic center of an area is defined here as the center of gravity of the surface, or that point on which the surface would balance if it were a plane of uniform thickness. All localities in the following list, therefore, are approximate. No marked or monumented point has been established by any government agency as the geographic center of either the 50 states, the conterminous U.S., or the North American continent. A monument was erected in Lebanon, KS, the conterminous U.S. center, by a group of citizens. A cairn in Rugby, ND, marks the center of the North American continent. Nebraska, thirty-seventh state in the Union, derived its name from Indian words for the Platte River, the state's principal stream. The Omaha called the river Ni-bthaska; the Oto word was Ni-brathke. Both had the same literal meaning, "flat water," translated into the French as la riviere Plate or the Platte River.

More Information a Natural Features Almost all of the Heartland is in the vast central lowland of North America. The land is mostly level with some gently rolling hills. Horizontal sedimentary strata of limestone, sandstone, shale, and dolomite underlie the entire region. The gentle slopes of the region result mainly from glacial action during the Pleistocene Epoch (1.6 million to 10,000 years ago). The flatlands and productive soils were produced during the last Ice Age at the close of the Pleistocene Epoch, as were the Great Lakes, which were formed by glacial scouring and then filled with the melt water of retreating glaciers. Almost all of the surface water in the Heartland drains into the river systems that feed the Mississippi River, and flooding is a natural hazard in the spring. Both the Great Lakes and the Mississippi have long served as vital transportation links that contribute to the economy of the region.

You might use maps to locate an ancestral home or to find a reference to a town that no longer exists. In "Gazetteers: Identifying Research Localities," Ancestry 12 (4) (July/August 1994), David Thackery notes the following: "Genealogy is, among other things, an exercise in geography. Successful research often hinges on identifying the locality in which one's ancestors lived. Once we know the locality, we are in a position to consult the records and histories for the area in an effort to piece together the lives of our forebears." Pinpointing modern place-names can begin with Frank R. Abate, ed., Omni Gazetteer of the United State of America , 11 vols. (Detroit: Omnigraphics, 1991). The work is subtitled "Providing Name, Location, and Identification for Nearly 1,500,000 Populated Places and Geographic Features in the Fifty States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Territories." Modern towns can also be sought in

The Acropolis The early settlers probably came to Piedras Negras around 400 B.C., before the start of the Maya period, and established farms in the fertile valley. The archaeologists have found ceramics dating back to that time. The site exploded in size far later, around 400 A.D., when many of the temples were built and the kingship may have been introduced. A visitor entering from the river would have first seen the red-painted royal palace rising several stories, partly obscured by a haze of burning incense. "You would have smelled the city before coming close to it," Houston said. But unlike many Maya reconstructions, which depict the cities as shining, well-maintained settlements, Piedras Negras was probably in a constant state of disrepair. It went through two major construction phases. First, mortuary pyramids containing the tombs of early kings were built. Then, around 700 A.D., the city was almost covered in masonry. Like in many ancient cities, the population remained small. Even at its peak, Piedras Negras probably never had more than 5,000 residents.

Aerial Photographs of Colorado
University of Colorado, Map Library
Aerial photographs dramatically portray the changing landscape of Colorado: a mountain valley can be seen where there is now a reservoir; changes in the vegetation and ground cover can be traced over the years, and the growth of towns and cities documented. This website provides access to over 1,700 digitized aerial photographs of Colorado taken by the U.S. Forest Service in the years from 1938 to 1947. The photographs can be searched or browsed using a map search or a geographic keyword search. Searches will bring up information and metadata about each photograph and a 150 dpi image that can be downloaded free of charge. (See "Using This Site" for more information.) The photographs available through this web site cover eight counties: Boulder, Clear Creek, Eagle, Gilpin, Grand, Jefferson, Larimer, and Summit.
Cattle Trails of the West
Colorado Historical Society
The collections of the Colorado Historical Society contain a wealth of primary resources, books, and magazine articles that illustrate the "real life" of the cowboy. Information about various aspects of the cattle trade provides a wider context within which to understand the lives of cowboys and cowgirls, ranchers and their families, businessmen, and townspeople of the West as the cattle moved through.
