CHAPTER 11
THE GREAT PLAINS AND PRAIRIES
T he historian Walter Prescott Webb, in his book The Great Plains , suggested that the northwest Europeans who settled much of the United States faced three great "environmental encounters"areas where climatic conditions were so unlike those of their home region that the agricultural crops and settlement patterns developed in Europe were inappropriate. The first of these encounters was with the high summer temperatures and humidity levels of the Southeast. The second was the arid Southwest and interior West. The third was the great continuous grasslands located astride the center of the country ( Map 10 Among the problems on the grasslands, average annual precipitation was much less than in the East, although violent storms accompanied by high winds, hail, and tornadoes were common. Blizzards with wintry blasts intensifying the cold drove the snow into immense drifts. The hot, dry winds of summer parched the soil and sometimes carried it away in great billowing clouds of dust. The region's sparse natural water supply would not support tree vegetation except along the stream courses. Many of these streams were small and flowed only intermittently. Eastern farmers, accustomed to a plentiful supply of water for crops and animals, as well as ample wood for building, fencing, and heating, had to adapt to quite different conditions in their attempts to settle the Great Plains.

Wyoming Lesson Plans Please note that with regard to lesson plans dealing with anthropology, archaeology, indigenous people, ancient civilizations, history, etc, there may be some cross-over and blurring of lines between the topics. For example, a lesson plan dealing with archaeology is automatically dealing with an anthropological subject. A lesson plan dealing with indigenous people is also automatically dealing with anthropology and any of them may, or may not, be dealing with history or ancient civilizations. While every attempt will be made to keep the topic lines as 'clean' as possible, be aware this may not always be possible. Appropriate grade or age levels are included with the lesson plans. The number of lesson plans available online for this topic is enormous. This site can not and does not index all lesson resources. That would be impossible, as sites appear and disappear with astonishing rapidity. The following provides some idea of what is available and will hopefully be a good starting point. BY MARK ANDERSEN / Lincoln Journal Star The latest paint-by-numbers Nebraska landscape depicts a forest of rooftops between Lincoln and Omaha. Elsewhere, a familiar image comes into better focus. The 2004 population estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau — which show the state grew by 33,975 to 1,747,214 — continue to dig the graves of western counties (LJS File) Even at the halfway mark to the next full census, the unmistakable shovel marks show a relentless shift from rural to urban, from west to east.
On July 1, 2000, those 70 mostly rural and western counties had 253,434 people. Four years later, they had 12,290 fewer — almost enough to fill Beatrice. Growing communities
Meanwhile, the 23 growing counties could claim 48,750 additional residents, as if Bellevue had cloned itself. Douglas, Lancaster and Sarpy counties now have more people, 879,630, than the other 90 counties combined — 867,584. Sarpy County has 135,973. Lancaster County has 261,545. Douglas County has 482,112.

Nebraska - A State Unit Study This mini unit on NEBRASKA uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study NEBRASKA. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child's needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about NEBRASKA and enjoyable for all who are participating. Nebraska's State Flag A banner for the State of Nebraska shall consist of a reproduction of the great seal of the state, charged on the center in gold and silver on a field of national blue. Create a State "Infodesk": Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect. Print a blank map of the state, or draw one on tag board, that you can place on the bulletin board. As you study the political and physical features of the state, have the children fill in the name of the state capital, large cities, and major geographical features. Color the map using different shades for varying elevations.

Nebraska, once considered part of the American desert, is now a leading farming state. Nebraskans have practiced scientific farming to turn the Nebraska desert into a land of ranches and farms. Much of the history of the state is the story of the tough, strong-willed Nebraska farmer. In the 1860s, the first great wave of homesteaders poured into Nebraska to claim free land granted by the federal government. Many of the first farm settlers built their homes out of sod because they found so few trees on the grassy land. Tourists can now drive along highways that follow the historic Oregon and Mormon trails. Almost every county has a fair during the summer and many communities hold annual fall festivals. GOVERNMENT

Back to Classics Background Garreau, Joel (1948-) Joel Garreau, a journalist for the Washington Post , is the author of two popular books: Edge City: Life on the New Frontier (1991) and The Nine Nations of North America (1981). These books, based on observations Garreau made while traveling throughout North America as a journalist, analyze the social and political forces Garreau believes are transforming the geography of contemporary American communities. His ideas have found a ready audience in both academic and nonacademic settings. Both books are fixtures in college classes in anthropology, geography, demography, and urban planning. In addition to writing for the Washington Post , Garreau is senior fellow at the School of Public Policy at George Mason University. Innovation In his first book, The Nine Nations of North America

POWERFUL NEW TOOL BRINGS NASA TECHNOLOGY, SPACE DATA TO CLASSROOMS A new CD-ROM that combines technology, data, and resources from JPL, the University of Nebraska, and several Earth-observing spacecraft will help educators, students, and environmental resource managers learn more about how to apply remotely-sensed data in a variety of disciplines, including physics, geography, and environmental monitoring. Released by the Consortium for the Application of Space Data to Education (CASDE), the CD-ROM contains images taken from the Space Shuttle, aerial and satellite photography of Nebraska and California, tools for analyzing and viewing, prototype lessons and educational "Building Blocks." CASDE is a partnership between NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and the Johns Hopkins University. Included on the CD-ROM is a prototype of state-wide electronic snapshots called "Virtual Nebraska." Various types of multispectral images can be accessed as a tool to help provide comprehensive information about selected cities, including vegetation indexes, census data, water boundary information, land use, and other types of agricultural information. Virtual Nebraska will serve as an example of how other states can participate and develop their own virtual states, eventually culminating in "Virtual America," which will include all 50 states.
