The name was changed to Knox by a statute passed February 21, 1873, which took effect April 1, 1873. Knox County is bounded on the north by the Niobrara and Missouri rivers, and on the east by Cedar, on the south by Pierce and Antelope, and on the west by Holt County. Education for Michigan Indians began with the arrival of the missionaries. A Mission was established on Mackinac Island in 1823 by the United Foreign Missionary Society. It was ministered by Rev. William M. Ferry. The school averaged 150 students per year until it was closed in 1834. In 1839 Rev. Peter Doughtery came to the Grand Traverse region and began his mission and school.
The Holy Childhood of Jesus mission was founded in 1827 with the first school building constructed that year, next to the church in Little Traverse (now called Harbor Springs.) Ottawa, Chippewa, Potawatomi, Winnebago, Menominee and some children from other out-of-state tribes came long distances and boarded at the school. A few nearby students also attended as day students.
In 1843 the Methodist Church opened Wesleyan Seminary (later changed to Albion College) in Albion and during the 1850's taught basic reading, writing and arithmetic. There were other mission schools though out Michigan and those records will be found in with the church's records.
Then the United States government got into the education business. "The Treaty of 1855 removed control of Indian schools from the missionaries and placed responsibility for Ottawa education firmly in the hands of the federal government. Of the country's forty-eight federally supported Indian schools, twenty were in Michigan, located at Onawmeceeneville, Eagletown, Grove Hill, Pine River, Bear River, Little Traverse, Middle Village, Cross Village, Cheboygan, Iroquois Point, Sugar Island, Garden Island, and in Isabella, Mason and Oceana counties."* Three government schools were constructed in Elbridge township and two in Crystal township in Oceana county and one each in Eden and Custer townships in Mason county.

CHARACTER COUNTS! In Nebraska: Abstract 1
Home Resource Links Character Education Students are happy. They show good behavior in the halls and are respectful to the teachers.
Handling Rebellious Teenagers
The kids are using better manners. They are being more polite and considerate of us and the other kids. They are more respectful of kitchen utensils and property. I find that students are willing to help out in the music room with clean-up and straightening the room. They are also respectful of each other in band when a student is playing alone on an instrument or having a bad day. Their effort to live the principles of Character Counts! is evident.
Character Counts! has provided my third graders with a framework with which to evaluate their own behaviors, as well as the behaviors of their peers and even those in the public view. We've also implemented grade level activities to teach good decision making and I regularly have other students approach me about issues of character in their lives and in the news. If you're committed to raising caring, thoughtful young people, then Character Counts! offers a thoroughly researched, flexible method of teaching young people about good decision making, ethical behavior and the virtues of living a productive life wherever you live. Teachers, especially, need to take a hard look at the character lessons they deliver, both spoken and unspoken. Educators cannot provide students with academic knowlege and not support and encourage the application of that knowlege in an ethical manner.

Home NewsSmith Paying Tribute to Smith's First Known Native American Graduate By Jan McCoy Ebbets In 1892, Angel de Cora of Winnebago, Nebraska, arrived at Smith as a student in the college's now-defunct School of Art. She had the good fortune to study drawing and painting with the well-known American landscape artist and Smith professor Dwight Tyron. To help pay for her education, she worked as a night custodian in Hillyer's Art Gallery. In 1896, she graduated and went on to become a well-known Indian artist, much sought after as an illustrator of books and magazines at the turn of the 20th century.
In her second year at Smith, Yvonne Nicole Tiger '03, a women's studies major, heard mention of Angel de Cora and found her photograph in an admission brochure on diversity. Upon further inquiry, Tiger found that, but for a few photographs, de Cora had disappeared from the annals of Smith history. "I was intrigued as well as angered," she says. Both reactions stemmed from what Tiger calls a realization of the "invisibility of this Native woman, living in a non-Indian world, who graduated from our college. There is nothing at Smith that memorializes or honors her contributions to the art world." "As a fellow Indian Smithie, I felt obligated to pay respect to her by making sure that she no longer lingers in obscurity," explains Tiger, whose tribal roots are Cherokee–Creek–Seminole.

Headmaster holds door open to health and education for Vietnam’s ethnic minorities
Mr. Bach Cong Tien, Vice Chairman, People’s Committee of Ba Vi District Photo: Joanne Fairley/CWS By Thomas Abraham "This is Mr. Tien. He’s an ethnic minority member." That’s how the former Vietnamese headmaster was introduced to Church World Service’s representative in Vietnam, Joanne Fairley. It’s hardly the first thing you’re told when meeting someone, but Tien’s minority status is significant for several reasons. Improving services for ethnic minorities has been a CWS goal since 1990. Before that, the organization had already contributed over $8 million to the country’s post-war reconstruction, after resettling over 80,000 Vietnamese refugees. More than a third of CWS Vietnam’s $1.4 million budget for the next three years — funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture — is aimed at educational support for ethnic minority students. Ethnic minorities make up 20 percent of Vietnam’s 77 million people. They speak more than a dozen distinct languages and many dialects. Eleven groups have their own writing systems. Although animistic beliefs are common, a large number are Catholics or Protestants, while the Khmer practice Buddhism and the Cham are Hindu or Muslim.

First National Conference for Rural School Finance Held in Nebraska City
The Rural School and Community Trust (Rural Trust) and the University of Nebraska College of Law convened a national gathering of school finance experts, leading lawyers, rural advocates, and educators in Nebraska City, Nebraska, on November 13-15, 2002, to discuss ways to improve funding and educational opportunities for students attending the nation's rural schools. The conference, "Mobilizing Resources for Rural Students," was the first national gathering ever to address the broad array of issues in this complex and rapidly evolving legal and policy arena. The group focused on why rural schools and students matter, the unique needs of rural poor and minority students, the experiences and perspectives of activists and leaders in school finance reform, and the specific impacts of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). Speakers included lawyers who have won court victories in a number of state school finance cases, leading legal scholars and finance experts on school finance issues, and citizen activists who have successfully organized school finance reform efforts and media campaigns.
