The Mormons:
The exodus of the Mormon pioneers between 1847 and 1869 was an exciting time in American history. The saga began in 1830 in Fayette, N.Y., where Joseph Smith organized the Church of the "Latter Day Saints" called the Mormon Church. The church grew in membership but opposition also grew. The group relocated in Ohio, then Missouri and finally to Nauvoo, Ill. Mobs murdered Joseph Smith in 1844. In 1846, the Mormons left Nauvoo because of conflict and mistrust under the leadership of the new president, Brigham Young. They crossed the river and established winter quarters north of Omaha, Neb. The following spring, 143 men, three women and two children began their journey toward Salt Lake City, Utah, traveling in 75 wagons. In May 1847, an "odometer" was installed to count the revolutions of the wagon wheel to calculate mileage. The odometer could tally ten miles before starting over. This thousand-mile march is now known as the " Mormon Trail It was decided by some to locate in this area. Under the leadership of Henry and Sarah Hudson, founders of Genoa, a colony was set. The following is a description of Genoa from Henry Hudson's diary:

Private vs. Public Schools: What's the Difference?
(Page 1 of 3) Your goal is to find a school that will meet your child's needs. But how do you choose between a public school and a private school? By Victoria Thorp and Jesse James, GreatSchools.net Staff
    Cost
Public schools cannot charge tuition. They are funded through federal, state and local taxes. When you pay your taxes, you are paying for your child's education and the education of other children in your community. Private schools cost money. Private schools do not receive tax revenues, but instead are funded through tuition, fundraising, donations and private grants. According to the National Association of Independent Schools, the median tuition for private day schools in the United States is close to $12,000 for grades 1 to 3, $13,000 for grades 6 to 8 and $15,000 for grades 9 to 12. The median tuition for boarding schools is $12,000 for grades 1 to 3, $27,000 for grades 6 to 9, and $28,000 for grades 9 to 12. Parochial schools generally charge somewhat less.

As a savage, we cannot tolerate him any more than as a half-civilized parasite, wanderer or vagabond. The only alternative left is to fit him by education for civilized life. The Indian, though a simple child of nature with mental facilities dwarfed and shriveled, while groping his way for generations in the darkness of barbarism, already sees the importance of education...
Board of Indian Commissioners, 1880. (As quoted in Prucha, 1978:194.)
Beginning in the 1870s, many Indian reform organizations sincerely believed that the "time had come for the sword to give way to the spelling book." (Trennert, 1988:3.) Flush with the success of many military victories over Indian Peoples, such reformers were committed to creating a new system of Indian education - the Indian boarding school - which would bring "the gift of civilization"to "savages" who resolutely clung to their cultural and religious traditions. The Indian boarding school was another in a long line of attempts by Euro-Americans to"civilize" and indoctrinate American Indian children. This paper will explore this historical dedication to Americanizing Indian people through the use of education by

Note: When students walk into class, the theme should be written on the board in a prominent place and the overhead with the 5-Minute Journal Write should be on the overhead projector. Ask students to sit down and write for five minutes. Theme: Indian boarding schools were designed by Euro-American policy makers who sought to assimilate Indians into mainstream white society and to purge them of everything that was Indian. 5-Minute Journal Write: Describe a person who comes from a civilized society. Describe a person who comes from an uncivilized society. How are they different?
When students are done writing, open the classroom up for discussion: . What does it mean to be civilized? How are civilized persons different from uncivilized persons? 2. Who decides who is civilized and who is not?

F or most of the last century, children who have been removed from their families have been placed in foster care. Today, there are about 600,000 such children, and the system is beset by problemsa shortage of competent staff, children who spend much of their youth bouncing around from one family to another, and poor outcomes (high rate of teen pregnancy, for instance). And the system is overburdened. Caseloads have doubled over the last 20 years (largely as a result of the crack epidemic), while the number of foster families has declined. Faced with these challenges, some reformers propose making greater use of boarding schools. Such institutions exist across the nationlike Boys Town in Nebraska, Philadelphia's Girard College, and the Piney Woods School in Mississippiand many have good track records in preparing disadvantaged children for college and future careers. But the social services people want no part of that, as Newt Gingrich discovered in 1994 when he spoke out on the subject. Society's sole objective should be to unite children with their families, they argue. The problem with this position can be summarized in two words: Brianna Blackwood. Brianna was the two-year-old who was taken from a loving foster family and returned to her mentally retarded mother in the District of Columbia three years ago. Two weeks later, Brianna was dead. Her case is hardly unique. Many biological parents are unfit to look after their children either because of drug use, mental illness, family instability, or similar problems.

    Thomas Hart Benton
Thomas Hart Benton was born on April 15, 1889 in Neosho, Missouri. He spent most of his childhood in boarding schools and in Washington, D.C. and landed his first job as a cartoonist for the Joplin American in Missouri. Benton studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, resided briefly in Paris and New York City, then settled in Kansas City, working as an instructor of drawing/painting at the Kansas City Art Institute. His most famous pupil was the Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock; his well known Nebraska students at the Institute were Aaron Pyle and Bill Hammond. Benton was part of the Regionalist movement and is well known for his mural paintings that depict commmon everyday scenes of Midwestern life. The figures in his works often appear cartoon-like through the way he distorts the bone and muscular structure of their faces. His most famous murals are located in the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City and in the Truman Library in Independence. Benton died January 19, 1975 in his studio.

    Nebraska Trailblazer
    #1: American Indians
    Background Information
Pawnee Oto and Missouri Omaha and Ponca Ponca ... Genoa Indian School The Pawnee The Pawnee were the most populous tribe in Nebraska and lived in the area longer than any other group. They probably migrated from the south into Nebraska at least three hundred years ago. (For convenience present-day states and counties are used to give locations with the knowledge that Nebraska did not exist three hundred years ago.) We know this because of archeological evidence, and lathough earlier sites exist there is insufficient evidence to postualte a connection with these older occupations. The earliest known villages of the Pawnee consisted of circular earthlodges located along the lower Loup River where most of the tribe continued to live well into historic times. There were also villages along the central Platte and Republican rivers. The Pawnee were divided into four autonomous bands, Skidi, Republican, Tappage, and Grand. The Skidi always had their own village. The other bands lived separately or joined together for added protection or as a result of shifts in political alliances. It was estimated there were ten to twelve thousand Pawnee in the early 1800s. They spoke a Caddo language, which is very different than the language of other Nebraska tribes. The Pawnee raised several varieties of corn, beans, and squash that were tended by the women. Around 1700 they began to acquire horses by raiding tribes far to the southwest who in turn got the animals from their Spanish neighbors. The only other domestic animal they had were dogs, which they had from very early times.

    Boarding School as Last Refuge
    By Karen-Louise Boothe
    February 11, 1998 RealAudio 2.0 14.4
Governor Carlson's $12 million bonding proposal to fund boarding schools got another hearing at the capitol February 11. The schools would serve "at risk" juveniles who have had no major criminal problems. The proposal for Minnesota may be modeled after the Milton-Hershey School in Hershey, Pennsylvania. HOUSE SPEAKER NEWT GINGRICH sparked debate over so-called residential education programs in 1994 when he suggested placing poor children in orphanages. Critics recalled images of mistreated street urchins in the film Oliver Twist while supporters praised the model as portrayed in the film classic Boys Town, about the work of the Reverend Edward J. Flanagan in Nebraska.
